Yes, a crooked log can be milled into usable lumber; crookedness alone does not make it worthless. Measure its sweep, taper, dimensions, species, and defects, then choose a sawing method and end use that fit both the log and the mill. There is no universal yield-loss percentage or cut plan that applies to every crooked log.
The goal is not necessarily to get the most board feet. A plan that produces more volume may still produce lower-grade, less straight, or less valuable boards. Before making irreversible cuts, consider the intended product, the equipment’s limits, the log’s sound sections, and how the lumber will behave as it dries.
What Makes a Log Difficult to Mill?
Sweep is a gradual curve along a log’s length. Other factors that affect recovery include taper, an uneven or elliptical cross-section, knots, checks, rot, breakage, and other defects. A log can have more than one of these conditions, so appearance alone is not enough to predict how much usable lumber it will yield.
Logs do not need to be perfectly straight to be worth considering. Oregon State University Extension says that a useful rule of thumb is that if half the log’s length is straight, it will likely make a merchantable sawlog. This is only a screening guideline: local mill specifications, species, size, and other quality factors still matter.

USDA Forest Service research describes opportunities to improve recovery from out-of-shape hardwood saw logs while maintaining lumber quality. That does not mean every mill can handle every curved log, or that a particular method guarantees a better result.
Start With the Log and the Intended Product
Before choosing a cut, record the log’s species, length, small- and large-end diameters, taper, sweep direction and severity, and visible defects. Also decide what you want the lumber to become: clear or wide boards, shorter stock, slabs, or another product. The desired board thickness, width, length, and grade all affect the plan.
A short sound section may be useful even when the full log cannot provide long, straight boards. Possible uses to assess include shorter boards, narrower stock, slabs, turning blanks, and other products suited to the wood that remains. These are options to evaluate, not guaranteed yields.

If you are considering selling logs, ask local mills what species, dimensions, and quality they accept. Oregon State University Extension recommends obtaining multiple local mill quotes. Its market guidance is specific to Oregon, so confirm local requirements elsewhere. A portable sawmill may be an option when a local mill will not take a log because of its species or size, but check the actual machine’s capacity and setup for your log before arranging the work.

Choose a Sawing Approach That Fits the Equipment
| Approach | What it does | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Curve sawing | Follows the log’s natural curve where the mill is designed to do so. | Confirm the machine can accommodate the curve. A study of mostly eight-foot, grade 2 and 3 cherry logs found greater lumber volume from curve-sawn cants than straight-sawn cants; that result is specific to the studied material and does not guarantee higher value or better results for other logs. |
| Straight sawing with deliberate orientation | Uses opening-face and orientation choices to recover lumber from a sweepy log without following its curve. | Account for sweep and cross-section rather than treating the log as a straight cylinder. The Forest Service’s Best Opening Face system addresses these factors, but a model or method is not a guarantee of a particular outcome. |
| Portable sawmill | Can bring milling to logs that local mills may not accept. | Ask about the specific mill’s dimensions, sweep limits, setup, and handling requirements. The fact that a mill is portable does not establish that it can safely or effectively handle a particular log. |
| Computer-aided planning | Can compare modeled sawing inputs and projected recovery. | The Forest Service’s LORCAT 4.00 guide describes simulations using inputs such as species, log dimensions, grade, kerf, opening face, board thickness, taper method, and costs. Results depend on the inputs and model assumptions; use them for planning, not as a promise. |
Compare Recovery With Quality and Value
More board feet do not automatically mean a better outcome. Compare the likely volume with lumber grade and value, board straightness, drying warp, intended use, machine capacity, and the cost of milling relative to the product’s value. Curve-sawing research on cherry logs considers both recovery and warp, illustrating why volume alone is not enough to judge a method.
For hardwood planning, the Forest Service’s LORCAT 4.00 tool can model inputs and report expected lumber volume and grades, by-products, costs, and projected returns. The result depends on the assumptions entered, including log dimensions and grade, species, opening face, thickness, kerf, and taper method. It should support a decision, not replace inspection or a sawyer’s judgment.

What Research Says About Sweep and Yield
Published figures on sweep are tied to particular samples and methods. They should not be treated as a forecast for an individual log:
- A 2008 Forest Service conference paper cited a background estimate of 7% to nearly 40% yield loss for logs with more than one inch of sweep. That is not a universal expected loss.
- A simulation using 51 western hemlock logs from 22 trees reported an average conversion decline of 10% per 100 mm increase in sweep. The report also described a 5% to 7% decline per 0.1 increase in sweep-to-diameter ratio. Those figures apply to that simulated material and structural-lumber context.
- A 1989 Forest Service study evaluated more than 3,000 logs representing major commercial softwood species in the western United States. In its defect ranking, crook and sweep came after several other defects, including ring shake, soft rot and voids, weather check, firm rot, and breakage. Do not transfer that ranking wholesale to hardwood logs.
- A 2007 Forest Service study of 1,700 hardwood logs at 17 mills across eight eastern states found that nearly one-third had enough curvature to incur sweep scale deductions of at least 5%. This describes that sample, not every crooked log.
Plan the Cut Before the First Saw Pass
- Inspect and measure: identify species, log length, both end diameters, taper, sweep direction and severity, and visible defects.
- Set the goal: choose the intended board dimensions, grade, and end use. Decide whether volume, quality, or value matters most for this job.
- Check equipment limits: confirm that the mill or sawyer can accommodate the log’s dimensions and curve, and ask how the opening face and orientation will be chosen.
- Compare feasible methods: consider curve sawing if the equipment supports it; otherwise discuss straight-sawing orientation and opening cuts with the sawyer.
- Consider the sound sections: assess whether shorter or narrower products fit the log better than long, wide boards. Do not apply a fixed bucking length without considering the log and intended product.
- Get advice before committing: for valuable or unusual logs, ask a local mill or qualified sawyer to assess the log. A simulation can help compare assumptions, but it cannot guarantee actual recovery.
- Plan for drying and use: decide how the resulting lumber will be dried, evaluated, and used before treating the cut plan as complete.
When Is a Crooked Log Not Worth Milling?
A log may not justify milling if its defects, dimensions, species, access, or handling needs make the expected product a poor fit for the available mill or intended use. Ask a local mill or sawyer to assess it rather than relying on a single sweep measurement or a generic yield estimate. For logs that are undersized or too defective to make useful lumber, Oregon State University Extension notes that firewood may be an option; other choices depend on local circumstances.
Sources and Limits
This guide draws on Oregon State University Extension Service’s Small-scale harvesting for woodland owners; USDA Forest Service publications on out-of-shape hardwood logs, curve sawing, the Best Opening Face system, LORCAT 4.00, log defects, and sweep in eastern hardwood logs. The studies cover different species, regions, samples, and purposes. They support careful assessment and planning, not a universal cut pattern, mill-capacity claim, or yield prediction.

FAQ
Can you mill a crooked log?
Yes. Crookedness alone does not disqualify a log. Its species, dimensions, sweep, defects, intended product, and the mill’s capabilities all affect whether milling makes sense.
How do you saw a log with sweep?
First measure the sweep and other log features, then choose a method that matches the equipment. A mill designed for curve sawing may follow the natural bend; otherwise, the sawyer can consider orientation and opening-face choices. Neither approach guarantees a particular yield.
Does curve sawing always produce more lumber?
No. A study of mostly eight-foot, grade 2 and 3 cherry logs found greater volume from curve-sawn than straight-sawn cants, but that result is specific to the study. Volume also does not by itself establish lumber grade, value, or drying performance.

How much lumber will I lose from a crooked log?
There is no reliable universal percentage. Published estimates and study results depend on species, log population, sweep, defects, sawing method, and the definition of recovery. Have the actual log assessed rather than applying a study figure as a prediction.
Can a portable sawmill handle my crooked log?
It depends on the particular machine, log dimensions, curve, setup, and handling needs. Confirm capacity and suitability with the mill operator before arranging the work.
Should I choose the cut that produces the most board feet?
Not necessarily. Compare volume with grade, value, straightness, drying warp, intended use, and milling cost. The highest-volume plan may not produce the most useful or valuable lumber.
