Microclover is a low-growing, small-leaf form of white clover used in lawns as either a grass companion or, less commonly, a clover-dominant groundcover. In practical terms, it is best thought of as a lawn enhancer: it can fill thin turf, add nitrogen to the soil, stay green with less fertilizer, and support pollinators when allowed to flower.
For most residential lawns we see on construction closeout and renovation projects, the best specification is not a 100% microclover lawn. It is a cool-season turfgrass blend with about 3% to 5% microclover by seed weight. That small percentage can make a noticeable difference without turning the yard into a high-risk experiment.
Microclover is not magic seed. It struggles in high heat, drought, deep shade, sandy soil, heavy traffic, and lawns managed with standard broadleaf weed killers. If you understand those limits before you seed, it can be a smart, durable addition to the right lawn.
What Is Microclover?
Microclover is dwarf white clover, botanically Trifolium repens. It is the same species as common Dutch white clover, but selected for smaller leaves, lower growth, and a finer appearance in turf. Common named types include Pipolina, Pirouette, and Miniclover.

Each flower may attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies, supporting biodiversity while creating pollinator-friendly ground cover in USDA Zones 3-10.
Compared with standard white clover, microclover usually blends more neatly into turfgrass. The leaves are smaller, the growth habit is lower, and it tends to flower less often when mowed regularly. It can still bloom, however, especially if mowing is infrequent or the lawn is kept higher during spring and early summer.
That flowering is both a benefit and a drawback. Bees and other pollinators use clover flowers, which is one reason clover has made a comeback in residential lawns. But if a household has small children running barefoot, a known bee-sting allergy, or a homeowner association that expects a conventional grass appearance, flowers need to be part of the decision.
On our job sites, we separate microclover into two categories: a turf blend component and a lawn replacement. Those are very different projects. A 95% tall fescue and 5% microclover lawn still looks like a lawn. A pure microclover stand looks and behaves more like a specialty groundcover, with more seasonal change and more visible patchiness under stress.
Why Homeowners Grow Microclover
The main reason to use microclover is to reduce the pressure on a conventional lawn. A grass-only lawn needs regular nitrogen, steady water during dry spells, good soil structure, and consistent mowing. Microclover does not remove those requirements, but it can make the lawn more forgiving.

Clover works with Rhizobium bacteria in root nodules to fix atmospheric nitrogen. When microclover is established well in a turf mix, university and regional turf guidance indicates it can reduce annual nitrogen needs by about 1 to 2 pounds of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet. For a homeowner, that often translates to about one fewer fertilizer application per year, depending on the lawn program.
This benefit depends on the seed being properly inoculated or coated with the right bacteria. If the clover cannot nodulate effectively, it will not perform the same nitrogen-fixing role. When we specify microclover seed, we look for inoculated seed or verify the inoculation requirement before purchase.
It Helps Fill Thin Turf
Microclover can creep into open spaces between grass plants, which helps cover soil that would otherwise invite weeds. That does not mean it will fix a failing lawn by itself. Bare areas caused by compaction, poor drainage, deep shade, or construction damage still need soil correction.
After a remodel, addition, utility trench, or hardscape project, the lawn often has compacted soil from equipment traffic. Seed tossed over that kind of surface is a low-odds repair. We core-aerate or loosen the soil first, correct grading and drainage, and then seed into a firm, prepared surface.
It Supports Pollinators
If microclover is allowed to flower, it can provide forage for bees. That makes it useful for homeowners who want a lawn that is less sterile than a conventional weed-free turf stand.
If bees are a concern, mowing before bloom reduces flowers. A lawn kept around 3 to 3.5 inches with regular mowing will usually have fewer blooms than an unmowed clover patch. This is a management choice, not a permanent trait.
It Can Stay Green With Less Input
In moderate conditions, microclover often holds good color with less fertilizer than grass alone. It can also help a lawn look fuller during mild weather. But it is not reliably drought-proof. In high heat or extended drought, microclover can brown, thin out, or die back, especially on sandy soil or exposed slopes.
That distinction matters in the southern United States and in water-restricted areas. A microclover lawn in Maryland or Pennsylvania is a different proposition than one in Georgia, Texas, Arizona, inland California, or Florida.

Where Microclover Works Best
Microclover is best suited to sunny or lightly shaded cool-season lawns. It pairs especially well with turf-type tall fescue and Kentucky bluegrass blends in northern states, the Mid-Atlantic, and parts of the transition zone where cool-season grasses are already appropriate.
For a typical residential lawn, the strongest use case is overseeding a thin but salvageable tall fescue lawn. The existing turf provides traffic tolerance and structure. The microclover adds density, color, and nitrogen contribution.
Good Sites for Microclover
Microclover is worth considering when the lawn gets at least 4 to 6 hours of sun, has workable loam or clay-loam soil, has manageable foot traffic, and can be watered during establishment. It is also a good fit for homeowners who are willing to stop blanket broadleaf herbicide use.
We like it most for side yards, front lawns with light use, backyard open turf, and lawn areas beside pollinator-friendly planting beds. It can also work well around new construction where the soil has been properly amended and compacted areas have been repaired before seeding.
Poor Sites for Microclover
Avoid microclover as the primary solution in deep shade, high-traffic play zones, dog runs, steep dry slopes, compacted subsoil, poorly drained areas, and hot southern lawns without irrigation. It is also a poor fit for owners who want a perfectly uniform weed-free grass lawn managed with standard broadleaf herbicides.
If the lawn fails because of drainage, shade, or soil compaction, microclover will not solve the underlying problem. On construction and grading jobs, we correct the cause first: slope water away from structures, relieve compaction, add organic matter where appropriate, and establish the right seed mix for the site.
microclover seed mixes and Seeding Rates
For cool-season lawns, a practical specification is 95% to 97% turfgrass and 3% to 5% microclover by seed weight. A common tall fescue seeding rate is about 6 pounds per 1,000 square feet. At that rate, the microclover portion is about 0.2 to 0.3 pound per 1,000 square feet.
For a 5,000-square-foot lawn, that means roughly 30 pounds of tall fescue seed plus 1 to 1.5 pounds of microclover. That is enough clover to influence the lawn without making it clover-dominant.
Pure microclover seeding rates vary by supplier, but a common range is about 1 to 2 pounds per 1,000 square feet. Overseeding rates are lower, often around 0.25 to 1 pound per 1,000 square feet depending on how much clover coverage the homeowner wants.
| Lawn Size | Microclover in Grass Mix | Pure Microclover | Typical Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1,000 sq. ft. | 0.2 to 0.3 lb microclover plus about 6 lb tall fescue | 1 to 2 lb microclover | Small front yard, repair area, test plot |
| 5,000 sq. ft. | 1 to 1.5 lb microclover plus about 30 lb tall fescue | 5 to 10 lb microclover | Average residential lawn |
| 10,000 sq. ft. | 2 to 3 lb microclover plus about 60 lb tall fescue | 10 to 20 lb microclover | Large lawn or full-property renovation |
Seed depth matters. Microclover seed is small and should not be buried deeply. The goal is firm soil contact with very light coverage. Broadcast in two perpendicular passes for even distribution, lightly rake or roll, and keep the surface evenly moist through germination.
What Microclover Costs in 2026
Microclover seed costs more than ordinary grass seed. In 2026 retail pricing, microclover commonly ranges from about $22 per pound on low-cost listings to roughly $30 to $65 per pound through garden and specialty seed suppliers. Bulk listings can be cheaper per pound, but availability and seed quality need to be checked carefully.

For a 5,000-square-foot grass-and-microclover lawn, the clover component alone is usually about $22 to $98 if you are using 1 to 1.5 pounds of microclover. That does not include tall fescue seed, soil testing, compost, starter amendments, equipment rental, or labor.
A pure microclover conversion is more expensive. At 1 to 2 pounds per 1,000 square feet, a 5,000-square-foot lawn needs 5 to 10 pounds of seed. At $22 to $65 per pound, seed alone runs about $110 to $650. That is before soil preparation, irrigation, and any removal of existing turf.
| Project Type | 2026 Cost Range | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| DIY microclover seed only | $22 to $65 per lb | Enough for about 1,000 to 5,000 sq. ft. depending on mix rate |
| DIY 5,000 sq. ft. mixed lawn | $22 to $98 for clover seed | Add grass seed, soil test, compost, rental equipment, and irrigation supplies |
| DIY 5,000 sq. ft. pure microclover | $110 to $650 for seed | Higher risk and more visible seasonal change |
| Professional overseeding or reseeding | $0.07 to $0.23 per sq. ft. | National 2026 range; microclover sourcing may add cost |
| Professional aeration | About $107 to $202 per visit; some calculators show $0.19 to $0.45 per sq. ft. | Compaction, access, slope, and lawn size affect price |
| Aeration plus overseeding | About $0.08 to $0.18 per sq. ft.; premium work $0.19 to $0.27 per sq. ft. | Often the best route for thin but existing lawns |
| Hydroseeding comparison | About $0.10 to $0.19 per sq. ft. | Microclover hydroseed blends may not be available from every contractor |
For construction closeout, the seed is only one line item. The real cost drivers are grading, topsoil quality, compaction repair, slope access, watering responsibility, erosion control, and whether existing vegetation must be removed. A cheap seed mix on compacted fill is usually wasted money.
How to Plant Microclover in an Existing Lawn
The best planting windows are the same general windows used for cool-season turfgrass: early fall is usually strongest, followed by spring where summer heat is not severe. Fall seeding gives roots time to establish before hot weather. Spring seeding can work, but the young plants face summer stress sooner.
Step 1: Test and Correct the Soil
Start with a soil test. Check pH, organic matter, phosphorus, potassium, and general fertility. Clover and grass both perform better when pH and soil structure are in range. If soil is compacted, aerate before seeding. If the lawn has drainage issues, fix drainage before spending money on seed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteOn renovated properties, we often see subsoil near the surface, construction debris, and tire compaction. Those conditions need correction. A quarter-inch dusting of topsoil will not fix poor structure underneath.
Step 2: Mow and Open the Canopy
Mow the existing lawn shorter than normal before overseeding, often around 2 inches, so seed can reach soil. Bag clippings if they are heavy. Dethatch only if there is enough thatch to block seed contact.
Step 3: Core-Aerate if Needed
For compacted residential lawns, core aeration is one of the best preparation steps. It opens the soil, improves seed-to-soil contact, and helps water move into the root zone. Aeration is especially useful after construction traffic, heavy foot use, or years of mowing over clay soil.
Step 4: Broadcast in Two Passes
Mix the microclover with the grass seed according to the target percentage by weight. Broadcast half the seed north-south and the other half east-west. This simple two-pass method reduces striping and thin areas.
Recommended Free Tools
Because microclover seed is small, spreader calibration matters. If the seed separates in the hopper, mix it with dry sand or a compatible carrier so distribution is more even.
Step 5: Keep It Moist
Water lightly and frequently during germination. The surface should stay consistently damp, not muddy. In warm, breezy weather, that may mean watering 2 to 3 short cycles per day for the first couple of weeks. After establishment, transition to deeper, less frequent watering.
Avoid routine evening watering. Wet turf overnight can encourage disease in grass, especially in humid climates.
Step 6: Mow at the Right Time
Wait until the young grass is tall enough to mow, commonly around 3.5 to 4 inches, then mow with a sharp blade. Do not scalp new seedlings. Once established, many mixed lawns perform well around 3 to 3.5 inches.

If the homeowner wants fewer flowers and fewer bees, mow before clover blooms. If pollinator value is a priority, allow some flowering in lower-use areas and keep high-use paths mowed.
Microclover Maintenance: What Changes After Seeding
A microclover lawn changes the maintenance plan. You cannot manage it exactly like a conventional weed-free turf lawn.
The biggest change is herbicide use. Microclover is sensitive to most broadleaf herbicides labeled for lawns. Products designed to kill dandelion, plantain, chickweed, and other broadleaf weeds may also injure or kill the clover. Weed control has to shift toward dense turf, proper mowing height, hand-pulling, spot treatment, and tolerance for some plant diversity.
Fertilizer also changes. Heavy nitrogen applications favor grass over clover and reduce the reason for planting microclover in the first place. Once established, use soil-test-based fertility and expect lower nitrogen requirements than a grass-only lawn. Leaving clippings on the lawn helps recycle nutrients and can support the lower-input approach.

Microclover may stay green in moderate conditions, but it is not a substitute for water during drought. Newly seeded lawns need reliable watering. Established mixed lawns can often handle moderate dry periods, but they may brown or thin in severe heat and drought.
Expect seasonal variation. In some regions, microclover top growth can brown or die back in winter, giving the lawn a patchier dormant-season look than a conventional turf stand. That does not always mean the clover is dead, but it is a real aesthetic issue for homeowners who expect uniform winter color.

Microclover is one option among several. The right choice depends on how the area will be used, how much foot traffic it gets, what the local climate supports, and whether the property has HOA or municipal rules.
| Option | Best For | Main Drawback |
|---|---|---|
| Microclover mixed with tall fescue | Lower-input cool-season lawns that still need a turf appearance | Cannot use most broadleaf herbicides; may struggle in heat and drought |
| Dutch white clover | Lower-cost clover coverage and pollinator value | Larger leaves, more flowers, less refined lawn appearance |
| Grass overseeding only | Homeowners who want a conventional turf lawn | Higher fertilizer needs and fewer pollinator benefits |
| Native meadow conversion | Low-mow areas, slopes, large sunny spaces, habitat goals | Different appearance, longer establishment period, possible code review |
| Creeping thyme | Small sunny ornamental areas with light traffic | Poor choice for active lawns; can be costly at scale |
| Sedges or native groundcovers | Shade, naturalized landscapes, region-specific plantings | Needs careful species selection and may not read as a lawn |
If you want a recognizable lawn, microclover plus turfgrass is usually the most practical alternative. If you want a habitat-forward landscape, a native meadow or regionally appropriate groundcover may be a better long-term plan. Microclover is useful, but it is still non-native white clover, not a native-plant lawn solution.

Before converting a front yard, check the rules. Some homeowner associations require turfgrass or define acceptable lawn appearance. Some municipalities restrict vegetation height in front yards, drainage easements, sidewalks, road rights-of-way, and sight triangles near driveways or intersections.
A microclover-grass blend is usually easier to defend than a full lawn replacement because it still functions as turf. A clover-dominant lawn, meadow, or mixed groundcover may need approval as an alternative landscape plan. In water-restricted states and communities with right-to-garden or drought-tolerant landscaping protections, homeowners may have more room to use alternatives, but documentation still matters.
For construction and renovation projects, we put this in the landscape scope rather than leaving it as a vague note. A useful specification includes seed cultivar or type, grass species, microclover percentage by weight, soil preparation, watering responsibility, mowing height, herbicide restrictions, and expected seasonal appearance.

When to DIY and When to Hire a Pro
DIY microclover overseeding is reasonable for small lawns, test areas, and homeowners who already have a working sprinkler setup. A 1,000-square-foot side yard is a good trial size. You can buy 1 pound of microclover, mix it with the right amount of grass seed, prepare the surface, and learn how it behaves through one growing season.
DIY becomes less attractive when the lawn is large, compacted, sloped, weedy, poorly drained, or tied to a construction punch list. A 5,000- to 10,000-square-foot lawn requires more seed, more water management, and better timing. Uneven spreading or poor prep will show quickly.
Hire a pro when the site needs grading, core aeration, compost topdressing, erosion control, irrigation coordination, or a written landscape specification. Professional overseeding in 2026 commonly runs about $0.07 to $0.23 per square foot, and aeration plus overseeding often lands around $0.08 to $0.18 per square foot for basic work. Premium seed and starter amendments can push combined work closer to $0.19 to $0.27 per square foot.
For a 5,000-square-foot lawn, that puts many professional aeration-and-overseeding jobs in the rough range of $400 to $1,350, depending on the scope. If soil repair, compost, irrigation, or turf removal is included, the price can move higher. That is still often cheaper than reseeding twice after a poor DIY establishment.
Our Practical Recommendation
For most homeowners, the best microclover lawn is not a pure microclover lawn. It is a good cool-season grass lawn improved with a small amount of microclover. Start with a soil test, fix compaction, use a 95% to 97% turfgrass and 3% to 5% microclover seed mix, and water carefully through establishment.
Use pure microclover only when the site fits and the owner accepts the tradeoffs: flowers, bees, herbicide limitations, seasonal color change, and possible reseeding after heat or drought stress.
If you are planning a new home, remodel, addition, or yard repair after construction, write the lawn mix into the project scope. The details matter. Seed type, percentages, soil prep, watering responsibility, and maintenance instructions are what separate a durable lawn from an expensive bare patch.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is microclover better than grass?
Not always. Microclover is usually best as a companion to cool-season grass, not a full replacement. A 3% to 5% microclover mix can reduce fertilizer needs and improve density while keeping a familiar lawn appearance.
How much microclover seed do I need?
For a grass mix, use about 0.2 to 0.3 pound of microclover per 1,000 square feet with roughly 6 pounds of tall fescue seed. For pure microclover, many suppliers recommend about 1 to 2 pounds per 1,000 square feet.
Can I use weed killer on a microclover lawn?
Most broadleaf lawn herbicides can damage or kill microclover. Weed control should rely more on dense turf, proper mowing, hand-pulling, spot treatment, and accepting some plant diversity.
Does microclover attract bees?
Yes, if it flowers. Regular mowing before bloom reduces flowers and bee activity. If pollinator value is the goal, allow some clover to flower in lower-traffic areas.
Is microclover drought tolerant?
It can handle moderate conditions, but it is not reliably drought-proof. In high heat, sandy soil, or extended dry weather, microclover may brown, thin out, or need irrigation and reseeding.
How much does a microclover lawn cost?
In 2026, microclover seed commonly costs about $22 to $65 per pound. A 5,000-square-foot mixed lawn may need 1 to 1.5 pounds of microclover, while a pure microclover lawn may need 5 to 10 pounds.
