But that seasonal association is not a promise that a particular plant will bloom by May 5. Climate, growing conditions and plant maturity all affect timing.
Dahlias and Mexican marigolds have important connections to Mexico, too, but the available sources do not support calling either a reliable Cinco de Mayo bloom. The distinction matters if you are choosing flowers for a holiday display or deciding what to plant.
Which Mexican flower is most closely associated with May?
Plumeria rubra, or flor de mayo
Mexico’s biodiversity authority connects the name flor de mayo—“May flower”—with the flowering season of Plumeria rubra. It describes flowers in white, pink, yellow and red, with a pleasant scent. The species is associated with dry forests in Mexico. Biodiversidad Mexicana (CONABIO)
This makes plumeria the best-supported choice if you want a Mexican flower with a direct seasonal link to May. It does not establish that every plant blooms in early May, much less on May 5. Local climate and growing conditions matter, and a young plant may not be at the same stage as a mature specimen.

How do other well-known Mexican flowers compare?
| Flower | What the sources establish | What that means for early May |
|---|---|---|
| Plumeria rubra (flor de mayo) | CONABIO links its common name to flowering in May and describes flowers in several colors with a pleasant scent. | The strongest May association here, but not a guarantee of bloom by May 5 in every place. |
| Dahlia | Mexico’s agriculture ministry identifies it as native to Mexico and its national flower; the environment ministry reports that 35 of 43 known species are endemic to Mexico. | Strong cultural connection, but the cited sources do not establish early-May flowering. |
| Mexican marigold (Tagetes erecta) | Kew lists Mexico in its native range and gives June through November as the best time to see it flowering in Kew’s gardens. | Kew’s calendar does not support a general promise of a May 5 bloom, and its garden timing should not be treated as a calendar for every climate. |
Dahlia: a national flower, not a verified May 5 bloom
Mexico’s agriculture ministry says dahlias are native to the country, have been cultivated there since pre-Hispanic times, and were declared the national flower in 1963. The ministry also reports an average of 313,000 dahlia plants produced over the five years preceding its 2022 article, attributing the figure to SIAP. That production figure is not evidence of bloom timing. Neither the agriculture ministry nor the environment ministry source establishes that dahlias reliably flower in early May. Secretaría de Agricultura y Desarrollo Rural (2022); Secretaría de Medio Ambiente y Recursos Naturales (2018)
Mexican marigold: a Mexican species with a later Kew season
Tagetes erecta is native to Mexico, according to Kew, but Kew’s stated flowering season—June through November—describes when it is best seen in Kew’s gardens. It is useful context, not a universal growing calendar. That source alone cannot support choosing it as a dependable early-May bloom. Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew

What should you plant or use for a Cinco de Mayo display?
If May timing is the priority, Plumeria rubra is the most evidence-backed option among these flowers because its Mexican common name is tied to May flowering. Treat that as a seasonal association, not a date-specific guarantee. For a display that must be in bloom on May 5, the sources here do not establish a dependable species-wide choice; check with a local grower about what is flowering in your area.
- Choosing an established plant: Ask whether it is mature and already in a flowering stage. The cited sources do not provide a regional schedule.
- Starting from seed or a tuber: Do not assume it will produce flowers by the holiday. The sources do not establish a planting timetable that applies across locations.
- Choosing for cultural significance: Dahlias have the clearest national-flower status in the sources, even though that status does not prove an early-May bloom.
CONABIO also identifies tuberose (Polianthes tuberosa) as an ornamental valued for the long life of its cut flower, but the cited information does not establish a May flowering period. A UNAM Botanical Garden result says a plant called “trompillo” begins flowering in May, but the available taxonomic context is insufficient to recommend it confidently for this purpose. Why “perfectly for Cinco de Mayo” needs a qualification
A flower’s Mexican origin or cultural importance is different from evidence that it will be blooming in a garden on May 5. The sources establish a May-season association for flor de mayo, national-flower status for dahlias, and a June–November flowering period for Mexican marigold in Kew’s gardens. They do not provide a location-specific planting calendar or guarantee bloom on the holiday across climates.
