Yes, MettleWood is real—but “stronger than steel” needs context. The material grew out of University of Maryland research, and its developer, InventWood, says it has entered initial commercial production under the name SUPERWOOD. However, production remains limited, current capacity is allocated, and the product is not yet a universal replacement for structural steel.
What happened to MettleWood?
MettleWood is the earlier name for a densified wood technology developed from research led by materials scientist Liangbing Hu at the University of Maryland. InventWood, founded in 2016 as a University of Maryland-related spinout, was created to commercialize cellulose-based materials from that research.

The company received a $20 million U.S. Department of Energy ARPA-E SCALEUP award in 2022 to help move the material from laboratory development toward manufacturing. InventWood later established an approximately 89,000-square-foot production, research, and commercial facility in Frederick, Maryland. The University of Maryland describes the scale-up effort and federal award.
InventWood now markets the commercial product primarily as SUPERWOOD, including an exterior-oriented product called SUPERWOOD XP. The names refer to the same broad technology lineage; MettleWood is the name that appeared in earlier research and promotional coverage.

As of 2026, InventWood says initial production is underway and that its facility is designed to produce more than one million square feet annually. It also says existing capacity is fully allocated, with future availability expected as production expands. That is early commercial manufacturing—not commodity-scale production comparable with steel, cement, ordinary lumber, or plywood.
How is the material made?
SUPERWOOD is processed wood, not a conventional metal-and-wood composite. InventWood describes a process that:
- Modifies lignin, one of the substances that helps bind wood’s structure.
- Selectively removes some hemicellulose.
- Compresses the prepared wood under pressure.
- Collapses much of the wood’s naturally porous structure.
- Brings cellulose nanofibers into closer contact and aligns them into a denser network.
Natural wood is light partly because its cell walls contain pores and voids. Its performance is also affected by knots, grain variation, defects, moisture, and weak interfaces between structural elements. Chemical treatment followed by mechanical densification reduces empty space and creates tighter bonding between cellulose fibers.

InventWood says the base material does not require synthetic resin, although optional additives or finishes may be used for requirements such as waterproofing or exterior durability.
What does “stronger than steel” actually mean?
It does not mean that every piece of SUPERWOOD outperforms every type of steel in every engineering test. “Strength” may refer to tensile, compressive, bending, shear, impact, or other properties. Stiffness, toughness, fire performance, and long-term behavior are separate questions.

The responsible conclusion is narrower: InventWood says its material can exceed construction steel in selected strength comparisons while weighing substantially less. Engineers would still need the exact property, steel grade, loading direction, moisture condition, specimen geometry, and testing standard before using the figures for design.
How much stronger is it than ordinary wood?
Earlier coverage has cited a roughly 12-fold increase in tensile strength, sometimes expressed as a 1,200% improvement, compared with the starting wood. A 2018 research paper from the University of Maryland research lineage reported a method for converting bulk natural wood into a high-performance structural material with major gains in strength, toughness, ballistic resistance, and dimensional stability. A review of wood-products innovation research summarizes that work.
That result should not automatically be treated as a universal rating for every commercial board. Laboratory specimens, product-specific samples, and finished building products may differ in density, grain orientation, dimensions, moisture content, processing conditions, and quality control.
Three comparisons should be kept separate:
- Improvement over the original wood feedstock.
- Performance relative to commercial lumber or engineered wood.
- Performance relative to a specified steel grade under a specified test.
Is MettleWood in mass production?
It has reached early commercial production, but there is no evidence that it is being produced at the scale needed to replace steel across industry.

The phrase mass production is therefore defensible only if it means the transition from laboratory and pilot work to commercial manufacturing. It is misleading if it suggests that the material is already available in steel-like volumes through normal building-material distribution.

- Interior architectural surfaces.
- Exterior cladding through SUPERWOOD XP.
Potential related applications include fencing, railings, decking, shade structures, privacy walls, doors, furniture, cabinetry, and other architectural products. These uses are more realistic near-term targets than replacing steel in a building frame because they can benefit from low weight, wood appearance, durability, and design flexibility without immediately requiring broad structural-code acceptance.
Future or developing applications
Earlier project descriptions identified possible uses in structural beams and columns, building connections, automotive components, transportation, consumer electronics, furniture, and aircraft-related components. Those should be treated as potential applications, not proof that the material is already approved, catalogued, or deployed across all those sectors. Can it replace steel in buildings?
Not broadly—not yet. A material can have an excellent strength-to-weight ratio and still be unsuitable as a direct substitute in a particular assembly.

Structural specification would require product-specific information such as:
- Density and modulus of elasticity.
- Tensile, compressive, bending, shear, and connection performance.
- Design values and allowable stresses.
- Creep and long-term loading behavior.
- Moisture limits and dimensional movement.
- Fire performance for the complete assembly.
- Fastener, joint, and connection data.
- Building-code acceptance and applicable product standards.
InventWood says detailed installation guidance is provided with purchased products, but its current public emphasis is on interior and exterior architectural applications. Structural beams are better understood as a developing or future category rather than evidence of a broadly approved steel replacement.
Fire, moisture, insects, and durability
InventWood and local-government materials describe the material as resistant to fire, moisture, fungus, and termites. InventWood says SUPERWOOD XP can achieve a Class A rating under ASTM E84. Frederick County materials describe the company and its product claims.

That fire claim needs careful interpretation. ASTM E84 measures surface-burning characteristics. A Class A result is not the same as a fire-resistance rating for an entire wall, floor, roof, beam, facade system, or building.
Outdoor performance also depends on the specific formulation, finish, exposure, detailing, installation, and maintenance. Resistance to termites or fungi does not make a product immune to every biological or environmental form of degradation. Long-term field data for a relatively new commercial material is naturally less extensive than the record for steel, concrete, pressure-treated wood, or established engineered-wood products.
Is it genuinely sustainable?
SUPERWOOD may offer climate advantages, but “wood-based” does not automatically mean sustainable or net-zero.
Potential benefits include renewable feedstock, biogenic carbon stored during the product’s service life, lower weight than steel, and possible use of fast-growing, underutilized, or invasive wood species. InventWood says its product has substantially lower carbon emissions than steel production and stores carbon for the life of the material. Those are company claims whose significance depends on the comparison’s life-cycle boundaries.
A credible assessment would need to account for:
- Energy used for chemical treatment, pressing, drying, and finishing.
- Chemicals, additives, coatings, and waterproofing treatments.
- Forest management and feedstock sourcing.
- Transport of raw wood and finished products.
- Maintenance and replacement over the service life.
- Recycling, reuse, incineration, or disposal at end of life.
Carbon stored in a product is not the same as permanent carbon removal. Large-scale demand could also create forest-supply pressure unless sourcing is carefully managed.

The technical breakthrough is only one part of commercialization. InventWood has identified feedstock supply as a major challenge. A larger manufacturing network would need consistent wood quality, reliable processing chemicals, skilled operators, repeatable yields, quality control, and distribution.

Other barriers include:
- Total installed cost: Material price alone does not determine competitiveness. Finishing, machining, shipping, engineering, fasteners, labor, and maintenance matter.
- Codes and certification: Architects and engineers need recognized standards, evaluation reports, and design values.
- Fire and moisture: Performance must be demonstrated for the specific product and assembly.
- Manufacturing consistency: Knots, grain direction, defects, density variation, and processing yield must be controlled.
- Connections: A strong board is not automatically a strong beam, joint, facade attachment, or fastener connection.
- Competition: Steel, aluminum, glulam, LVL, plywood, cross-laminated timber, composites, and modified woods already have supply chains and established uses.
- Industry adoption: Designers, fabricators, installers, insurers, and building officials need practical technical support.
Where does it fit compared with existing materials?
The most realistic near-term model is complementary use rather than wholesale replacement.

That makes lightweight cladding, architectural surfaces, furniture, and hybrid assemblies credible early opportunities. A hybrid building might combine densified wood with steel or concrete rather than attempting to eliminate those materials.
What buyers should verify before specifying it
- Request full, product-specific test reports rather than relying only on headline marketing numbers.
- Confirm the steel grade, mechanical property, test standard, specimen geometry, grain orientation, and moisture condition behind every comparison.
- Ask for density, stiffness, strength, creep, moisture, fire, coating, and fastener data.
- Check building-code acceptance, product evaluation reports, and project-specific engineering requirements.
- Separate interior SUPERWOOD products from exterior SUPERWOOD XP; do not generalize one product’s performance to another.
- Calculate total installed cost, including finishing, fabrication, transport, installation, and maintenance.
- Review feedstock sourcing and life-cycle information if carbon performance is central to the project.
- Confirm production allocation and delivery timing directly with InventWood.
InventWood’s official contact page is the appropriate starting point for professional inquiries and future-supply reservations. The company indicates that capacity is allocated and that pricing is not publicly posted.
Bottom line
MettleWood/SUPERWOOD is not vaporware. It is a genuine University of Maryland-derived material that has progressed into early commercial manufacturing. But “wood stronger than steel” is a qualified comparison, not a universal material ranking, and “mass production” currently means limited-capacity commercial output rather than an industrial-scale replacement for steel.
Its most credible near-term role is in lightweight, high-performance architectural and building products. Broader structural use will depend on independent testing, code acceptance, reliable feedstock and manufacturing, competitive installed costs, and evidence from real-world projects.
