Sonos Amp Multi is an installer-focused, eight-channel streaming amplifier for distributed residential audio. Announced on January 27, 2026, it provides eight independently configurable outputs rated at 125 watts per channel into 8 ohms, with those outputs assignable across up to four zones. The aim is to reduce the rack space, wiring complexity, and reconfiguration work involved in larger hard-wired Sonos installations—not to replace a conventional AV receiver or make every residential audio project simpler.
For custom home builders, architects, AV integrators, and owners planning several passive speaker zones, the important question is whether consolidating multiple Sonos Amps into one flexible chassis improves the overall design and serviceability. Sonos describes Amp Multi as a professional-grade product developed with residential-system integrators.

What Sonos Amp Multi is
Amp Multi is a networked amplifier designed for passive architectural speakers and distributed music systems. One unit offers:
- Eight amplified outputs
- 125 watts per channel at 8 ohms, with all channels driven
- Up to four software-configurable zones
- Independent mono or stereo configuration for each output
- Ethernet or Wi-Fi networking, including Wi-Fi 6
- Compatibility with the latest Sonos app and Sonos S2 for Android and iOS
Multiple Amp Multi units can be installed when a project needs more than four zones or more than eight amplifier channels. The chassis uses fanless, convection-cooled Class-D amplification with gallium nitride (GaN) power architecture and post-filter feedback. Sonos lists a frequency response of ±0.5 dB from 15 Hz to 20 kHz, total harmonic distortion of 0.005% at 2.83 Vrms–15 Vrms, and a signal-to-noise ratio of 114 dB referenced to 125 watts into 8 ohms. These are manufacturer specifications rather than independent performance measurements.

Eight outputs do not mean eight zones
This distinction matters when planning a home. Amp Multi has eight physical amplifier outputs, but Sonos specifies up to four configurable zones. Outputs can be reassigned to zones as the design changes, allowing an installer to alter the logical arrangement without necessarily moving speaker cables at the amplifier.
For example, an illustrative four-zone design could use two outputs for stereo playback in each of four areas. Another design might use one output per zone for mono distributed audio and reserve the remaining channels for additional speakers or a future room. The exact arrangement depends on speaker count, impedance, listening levels, wiring topology, and the intended stereo image.
Sonos says up to three Sonos Architectural speakers can be connected per channel, creating an advertised capacity of up to 24 Sonos Architectural speakers in the relevant configuration. That figure should not be generalized to every passive speaker system. The speaker manufacturer’s impedance and power requirements, the number of speakers connected in parallel, wire lengths, sensitivity, and expected volume all need to be checked during design.
Why it may help on larger residential projects
A large wired Sonos system assembled from separate two-channel Amps can require many individual chassis, power connections, rack positions, network connections, labels, and service points. It can also become awkward when an open-plan room is divided into new use areas or when a client changes the preferred zone layout during construction.

- Keep the Speakers You Love - Power compatible passive bookshelf, floor-standing or architectural speakers with 60 W per channel at 8 ohms or 120 W per channel at 4 ohms; bring amplification and streaming together in one compact system.
- Stream Your Way - Use AirPlay 2, Google Cast, Spotify Connect, TIDAL Connect or Amazon Music Casting, plus 20+ music services in the WiiM Home app; compatible devices, service availability and subscriptions apply.
- Enjoy Lossless Hi-Res Music - Stream supported lossless music over Wi-Fi or Ethernet, with playback up to 24-bit/192 kHz; audio quality depends on the source, service and settings, and AirPlay does not deliver 24-bit/192 kHz.
- Bring TV Sound to Your Speakers - Connect your TV through HDMI ARC for stereo sound from shows, movies and games; set TV audio output to Stereo PCM, then add a powered subwoofer through Sub Out for a 2.1 system.
- Tune Music to Your Room - Use RoomFit room correction to address room acoustics, then refine the result with graphic or parametric EQ; save separate EQ settings for each input to suit the way you listen.
Amp Multi addresses those practical issues in several ways:
- Higher channel density: Eight amplified outputs are housed in one unit rather than spread across four two-channel amplifiers.
- Flexible assignment: Outputs can be mapped to different zones through configuration, which can reduce redesign work when room boundaries or uses change.
- Rack-oriented installation: The separate 2U Rack Mount is designed for a compact rack arrangement with ventilation space above and below.
- Fanless operation: Convection cooling avoids a mechanical fan in the amplifier, although the rack still needs an appropriate thermal plan.
- Easier identification: An installer can trigger a setup chirp through the Sonos app to identify the correct physical unit in a rack containing multiple similar components.
- Per-output tuning: ProTune provides controls that are more useful in a room-by-room architectural installation than a simple global tone adjustment.
These features simplify specific installer tasks; they do not eliminate speaker-wire planning, network design, load calculations, commissioning, or future service access.
ProTune: the feature beyond extra channels
ProTune is arguably the most significant difference between Amp Multi and a basic multichannel amplifier. Sonos lists per-channel controls including:
- 10-band parametric EQ
- High-shelf, low-shelf, and bell filter types
- Up to ±15 dB of EQ gain
- Adjustable frequency and Q
- Gain trim from −15 dB to +5 dB
- Delay from 0 to 50 milliseconds
- High-pass filtering from 15 to 100 Hz
These controls can help compensate for differences between zones, including speaker placement, room geometry, boundary effects, and varying acoustic conditions. A high-pass filter may be useful where architectural speakers are being used without substantial low-frequency support, while delay and level adjustments can help align speakers in a distributed layout.
ProTune is not a substitute for speaker placement, acoustic treatment, measurement, or a complete room-correction workflow. It gives an integrator useful manual tuning tools; it does not automatically solve every acoustic problem.

Sonos also provides Optimize Sonos Speakers, which applies DSP profiles for Sonos Architectural speakers. This should be understood as speaker-specific processing, not as universal automatic room calibration.
Speaker, wiring, and network requirements
Amp Multi is not a complete audio system. It requires passive speakers, speaker cable, network connectivity, electrical power, and—where appropriate—a rack and professional commissioning.
According to Sonos’ Amp Multi guide:
- Speakers should be rated for at least 125 watts with 8-ohm loads.
- Speakers used with 4-ohm loads should be rated for at least 200 watts.
- Sonos Architectural speakers can be used with speaker loads as low as 2.67 ohms.
- Series wiring may result in poor sound quality.
- Speaker polarity must be observed.
Polarity errors can cause a weak center image and incorrect directional perception. Load calculations are equally important: the low-impedance guidance for Sonos Architectural speakers should not automatically be applied to unrelated passive speakers.
For networking, Amp Multi supports Ethernet or Wi-Fi. Sonos specifies CAT5 or higher for Ethernet connections. In a new build, providing dependable network infrastructure and accessible service locations is preferable to relying on marginal wireless coverage in a rack or equipment closet.
Inputs and intended applications
Amp Multi is primarily a distributed-audio amplifier, not a universal home-theater receiver. It is therefore important not to treat it as a direct replacement for the standard Sonos Amp in every application.

The standard Amp is the more obvious choice when a project centers on a television and requires HDMI ARC. Amp Multi is better aligned with multiple hard-wired music zones than with a TV-first system or advanced home-theater processing.
Amp Multi does support line-in. Sonos’ support documentation describes RCA and 3.5-millimeter source connections. A turntable without an integrated phono preamp requires an external phono preamp before connection.
Before specifying the unit, confirm the required source connections and third-party control integration for the project. A client who expects HDMI television audio, multiple home-theater sources, or broad interoperability across competing ecosystems may need a different architecture.

Best Value
- Connect port to your traditional stereo to stream music and more. Enjoy control with the Sonos app or Apple AirPlay 2, and easily expand your sound system to more rooms.
- Enjoy music, podcasts, audiobooks, and internet radio with your amplified audio equipment. You can also stream vinyl, CDs, and stored audio files to Sonos speakers in other rooms of your home.
- Stream sound directly from your iPhone or iPad and ask Siri to play Apple Music.
- Use the line-in to connect your phone or another device to your stereo.
- Speaker locations and cable routes: Document every speaker run, identify both ends, and leave serviceable access at the equipment location.
- Zone boundaries: Confirm which rooms or open-plan areas should share content and volume control, while allowing for later reassignment where practical.
- Electrical capacity: Plan rack power and avoid treating eight channels of amplification as a negligible load.
- Rack ventilation: Use the intended rack accessory where required and preserve the manufacturer’s ventilation clearances.
- Network service: Provide reliable Ethernet or well-designed Wi-Fi coverage, with network equipment and power placed for maintenance.
- Speaker compatibility: Verify impedance, power ratings, sensitivity, and parallel-load behavior rather than relying only on the 125-watt headline.
- Commissioning: Label outputs, assign zones, check polarity, set levels, and tune each room with ProTune where appropriate.
- Future access: Leave enough room to replace the amplifier, inspect connections, and service the rack without dismantling unrelated equipment.
The flat-back chassis, recessed rear connectors, front and rear status indicators, output-specific setup lights, and app-triggered identification chirp can make installation and service more orderly. The separate rack mount is not silently included: Sonos lists it as an additional accessory.
Availability and total project cost
As of August 18, 2026, the Sonos U.S. Amp Multi page presents a “Get a quote” path instead of a displayed consumer purchase price. That supports treating Amp Multi as a dealer- or installer-mediated product. Pricing, lead times, and availability may vary by market and authorized installation partner.
The same page lists the dedicated Amp Multi Rack Mount separately and showed “Shipping 8/25,” meaning August 25, 2026, for that accessory at the time observed. Confirm current availability directly with Sonos or the installer before finalizing a construction schedule.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The installed cost is broader than the amplifier quotation. It may include passive architectural speakers, speaker cable, rack hardware, network equipment, electrical work, labor, programming, acoustic tuning, and future service provision. A quote that compares only amplifier unit prices will not capture the system-design trade-off.
When Amp Multi is a strong fit
- Several hard-wired speaker areas are planned.
- The design needs up to four independently controlled zones per amplifier.
- A compact, fanless rack is desirable.
- Per-output EQ, delay, gain, and filtering would help balance different rooms.
- The homeowner already uses Sonos and values its app and ecosystem.
- Zone assignments may change during design or construction.
- A professional integrator is involved from the planning stage.
When another Sonos product—or another platform—makes more sense
- The project needs only one stereo room.
- Television audio and HDMI ARC are central requirements.
- The buyer wants a transparent retail price and self-installation.
- The system uses active speakers instead of passive speakers.
- The project needs more than four zones from one chassis.
- Advanced home-theater processing is more important than distributed music.
- The client wants maximum openness across multiple streaming ecosystems.
For an existing amplified stereo or receiver, Sonos Port may be the appropriate source component; it does not directly drive passive speakers. For a larger project, traditional multichannel custom-install amplification paired with a network streamer, or another whole-home audio platform, may provide a better fit depending on control, processing, and service requirements.
Bottom line
Sonos Amp Multi is best understood as a workflow and infrastructure solution for complex residential installations. Its eight outputs, four-zone limit, reassignable routing, ProTune controls, rack-focused chassis, and installer identification features can reduce equipment density and make evolving whole-home audio designs easier to manage.
It is not an eight-zone amplifier, not a complete speaker system, and not automatically the best replacement for a standard Sonos Amp. The right choice depends on the number of zones, speaker loads, network and rack plan, TV requirements, commissioning needs, and the value of keeping multiple rooms within the Sonos ecosystem.
