Lockly Visage Zeno Series is the closest match for a smart lock with facial recognition. Aqara Smart Lock U400 is the more compelling choice for compatible Apple households that want hands-free arrival using UWB. Schlage Encode Plus is the safer mainstream recommendation when dependable hardware, Apple Home Key, and simple access management matter more than biometrics.
One important correction: facial recognition, geofencing, and “AI security alerts” are not three standard features found together in most residential locks. Facial recognition is concentrated in Lockly’s Visage line; hands-free entry may use UWB, Bluetooth, or a phone-based automation; and “AI” usually describes biometric matching or camera-event detection rather than autonomous burglary prevention.

What “advanced” means in a smart lock
These features solve different problems and should not be scored as though they were interchangeable:
#1 Best Overall
- 3D Face, Palm Vein, and Fingerprint for Every Family Member: Everyone unlocks their way. You walk up for face recognition after work. Your elderly parent waves a hand for palm vein — no tiny fingerprint needed. Your teenager taps a finger on the way to school. 3D structured light works in total darkness (20,000 IR dots, under 1 second). Palm vein reads from 3 to 10 inches, no contact. Fingerprint stores 90 prints, 0.3s recognition. All data AES-128 encrypted, stored locally on device.
- 12-Month DualPower Battery + Instant Auto-Lock: 10,000mAh battery lasts up to 12 months. CR123A backup: 500 emergency unlocks, 5-year standby, operates at -4°F. USB-C port accepts any power bank. Built-in geomagnetic and accelerometer sensor detects door closing and locks instantly — no countdown delay. Rushing out for work with kids and bags? Pull the door shut, it locks behind you. No turning back to check. Upgrade from your old deadbolt without changing your routine.
- WiFi Connected, No Hub, 7 Ways In: Connects directly to WiFi, no bridge needed. Manage access remotely, check who came home when, get notifications — all from the SwitchBot app. Set up PINs for your spouse, kids, parents, or a friend stopping by while you are at work. Geo-fencing unlocks via Bluetooth as you approach. NFC card (up to 100) for every family member. Seven methods: face, palm vein, fingerprint, NFC, PIN, app, and physical key. No monthly app subscription required.
- Matter over WiFi, Works with Apple Home, Alexa, Google, Home Assistant: CSA-certified Matter connects natively to all major platforms without proprietary bridges. Control from iPhone, Apple Watch, Siri, or any voice assistant. Lock all doors when you leave for work, or unlock and turn on lights when you arrive home. Pairs with SwitchBot Video Doorbell to see visitors and unlock remotely.
- 15-Minute DIY Install, BHMA Tested: Replace your existing deadbolt with a Phillips screwdriver. No drilling or locksmith needed. Fits most US doors: crossbore 38/54mm, thickness 35-55mm, backset 60/70mm. Use the included SwitchBot lock cylinder only; existing lock cylinders are not supported. IP65 rated and BHMA tested for security, durability, and finish.
- Facial recognition identifies a registered face and unlocks the door. It is a biometric credential, not a general security-intelligence system.
- Fingerprint recognition matches a registered finger on a local sensor. Some manufacturers describe adaptive or learning algorithms as “AI.”
- Geofencing uses a phone’s location to trigger an automation when someone enters or leaves a defined area. It does not prove that the person is standing at the door or intends to enter.
- Bluetooth proximity unlocking detects an authorized phone nearby. Proximity is not necessarily geofencing.
- UWB hands-free unlocking can use distance, direction, and approach information more precisely than ordinary Bluetooth. It still depends on compatible devices and software.
- Video security alerts may identify motion, people, visitors, doorbell presses, or recorded events.
- AI security alerts is not a standardized product category. It may mean biometric matching, person detection, event classification, or simply a push notification.
Most smart locks notify you about lock activity, failed attempts, low battery, remote access, or camera events. They generally do not independently determine that a sophisticated burglary is underway.
The five best choices
1. Lockly Visage Zeno Series: best for facial recognition
Choose it if: facial-recognition unlocking is the feature you specifically came for.
The Lockly Visage Zeno Series is the clearest fit for this title. Lockly advertises facial-recognition unlocking, AI-assisted 3D fingerprint recognition, a randomized PIN Genie keypad, built-in Wi-Fi, smartphone control, Apple Home Key, access history, programmable auto-locking, remote access, and real-time notifications. The company says facial recognition works in approximately one second.
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchPC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Lockly also says facial data is encrypted and stored on the device rather than sent to its servers. That is a first-party privacy statement, not independent certification or an audit of the lock’s biometric architecture. Before buying, check how facial templates are added and deleted, whether logs identify the entry method, and what features require a LocklyOS subscription. The product page describes up to 90 days of activity history and refers to additional history through LocklyOS.
The manufacturer lists rechargeable batteries and up to eight months per charge, with two batteries included. Treat that as a claim under specified conditions: Wi-Fi use, temperature, traffic, auto-lock frequency, and recognition activity can change actual runtime. Keep the physical-key, keypad, fingerprint, and emergency-power procedures available.
Facial recognition is convenient, but it is not automatically more secure. It may reduce the chance of someone observing a PIN, while creating new concerns about biometric privacy and recognition failure. Darkness, glare, hats, masks, sunglasses, camera angle, and changes in appearance can affect operation. Do not assume spoof resistance or liveness detection unless Lockly documents it.
Verdict: The best match for facial unlocking, but buy it for that specific convenience—not because the word “AI” proves superior resistance to forced entry or hacking.
2. Lockly Vision Zeno Series: best for video and visitor alerts
Choose it if: you want a smart lock and video doorbell in one exterior unit.
The Lockly Vision Zeno Series combines a deadbolt with live video, two-way intercom, remote lock control, access sharing, access history, recorded video, visitor notifications, and real-time alerts. It also includes an AI-assisted fingerprint sensor and Apple Home Key support.
This is a better choice than Visage when seeing and speaking with a visitor matters more than facial unlocking. A camera can help with deliveries, unexpected visitors, and household awareness. It does not prove that the door is physically secure, detect every attempted break-in, or replace a properly installed deadbolt and strike plate.

- Your Face is Your Key: Unlock your smart lock for front door effortlessly with Lockly Visage’s advanced facial recognition technology - just walk up, and the lock detects your face to open automatically. Dual infrared sensors ensure accuracy in any lighting, even at night. Your facial data is encrypted and stored securely on the device, ensuring privacy and safety for your home.
- Unlock Your Home Effortlessly: Enjoy seamless smart home integration with Apple Home Key. Unlock your door with a simple tap on your iPhone or Apple Watch, even when your device is out of power. Manage and share access for guests, ask Siri to unlock, and set up automations directly within the Apple Home app for ultimate convenience.
- Self-Learning AI Fingerprint & 6 Ways to Unlock: Experience lightning-fast access with a 3D biometric sensor enhanced by AI learning-recognizing fingerprints in just 0.2 seconds while storing up to 99 prints. Perfect for everyone, including the elderly and children. Unlock via fingerprint, Lockly Home app, keypad, physical key, Apple Watch, or Alexa/Google Voice Assistant for versatile keyless entry.
- Smartphone Control with Built-in Wi-Fi: Take full control of your smart lock from anywhere with the Lockly Home app - no bridge required. Lock or unlock your door remotely, share or revoke access for others, and monitor activity with ease. Built-in Wi-Fi ensures reliable connectivity for your keyless entry door lock.
- Universal Fit & Easy DIY Installation: Designed to fit right or left swing doors 1 3/8” to 3 1/8” thick, Lockly Visage is easy to install in just 15 minutes with common household tools. Perfect for an effortless upgrade to a smart lock for front door.
Camera-equipped locks add complexity. Consider Wi-Fi reliability, video-storage retention, cloud processing, subscription boundaries, account security, and whether recording a shared hallway or neighbor’s property creates privacy concerns. A Wi-Fi outage may stop remote viewing while local keypad or physical-key access continues; confirm the behavior for the exact model.
Lockly lists a US sale price of $429 in the supplied product information. Verify current pricing and whether video history or other functions are limited by a paid plan.
Verdict: The most capable visitor-monitoring option here, but it is more expensive, more power-hungry, and more privacy-sensitive than a conventional smart deadbolt.
3. Aqara Smart Lock U400: best for compatible Apple users who want hands-free arrival
Choose it if: you have the required Apple hardware and want UWB-based approach detection rather than ordinary geofencing.
The Aqara Smart Lock U400 supports UWB hands-free unlocking, fingerprint access, passcodes, Apple Home Key, app control, voice control, NFC cards, and a physical key. Aqara describes UWB as detecting approach direction, distance, and intent. That makes it more precise than a large phone-location boundary, but it is not facial recognition and it is not a universal Android hands-free solution.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe UWB feature is unusually hardware- and version-dependent. Aqara lists a Thread-enabled Apple Home hub, such as HomePod mini, HomePod (2nd generation), and certain Apple TV 4K models. It lists Apple Watch Series 6 or later, excluding Apple Watch SE, on watchOS 11.5 or later, and iPhone 11 or later with listed exceptions, on iOS 18.5 or later. Requirements can change, so verify the current compatibility list before purchase.
The lock’s broad set of fallback methods is valuable: if the phone is dead or unsupported, a fingerprint, code, NFC card, app, or physical key may still work. Aqara claims up to six months of rechargeable-battery life. Actual runtime depends on usage, connectivity, weather, and settings.
Verdict: The strongest hands-free option in this group for the right Apple household. If you lack the required hub and device combination, treat UWB as unavailable and judge the lock only on its fingerprint, keypad, and other access methods.
4. Schlage Sense Pro: best for premium standards-based integration
Choose it if: interoperability and established lock hardware matter more than biometrics or cameras.

- 3-in-1 Design: Smart deadbolt lock, video doorbell, and 2K HDR camera in one device. Lock/unlock remotely, see visitors, and get motion or doorbell alerts through the myQ app.
- Face Access: Hands full? Your door unlocks automatically using facial recognition, no keys or phone needed.*
- 24/7 Visibility: 2K HDR video, wide-angle lens, and color night vision let you see every detail day or night.
- Five Ways to Enter: Face Access, fingerprint, PIN, app control, or key, flexibility for any visitor or moment.
- Ultimate Control: Monitor arrivals, manage PINs, and lock/unlock from anywhere with the myQ app.
This is the counterweight to feature-heavy biometric locks. Matter can make a lock easier to use across compatible smart-home platforms, while Thread is designed for low-power mesh connectivity. Neither removes the need to confirm controller support, border-router requirements, app setup, or which controls each platform exposes. A Matter-compatible lock may not expose every manufacturer-specific function identically in Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, or another controller.
Schlage advertises AAA BHMA ratings for its smart-lock range. Confirm the exact Sense Pro model and rating rather than applying that statement to every Schlage lock or treating a mechanical rating as a cybersecurity certification. A recent Tom’s Guide report described a four-AA battery design, keypad, 250-code capacity, and Matter over Thread/Aliro connectivity; verify those details against the current manual or product documentation for the version you intend to buy.
Verdict: A premium choice for standards-conscious buyers who want Apple Home Key and keypad access without facial scanning, fingerprints, or an integrated camera.

5. Schlage Encode Plus: best mainstream Apple-friendly recommendation
Choose it if: you want straightforward remote management, Apple Home Key, and multiple unique codes without biometric or camera complexity.
The Schlage Encode Plus provides built-in Wi-Fi, Apple Home Key with compatible iPhone and Apple Watch devices, unique access codes for family and guests, remote lock and unlock control, status checking through the Schlage Home app, and access alerts. Schlage’s observed MSRP is $329.
It deliberately does less than the biometric and video products in this list. There is no facial-recognition reader, fingerprint sensor, integrated camera, UWB hands-free system, or stated autonomous AI threat-analysis feature. That can be an advantage: fewer sensors and services mean fewer privacy questions and fewer feature-specific failure modes.
The Encode Plus is not a security guarantee. Its real benefits are practical access control, physical-key fallback, keypad entry, Apple Home integration, and a familiar operating model. Give each person a unique code instead of sharing one master PIN, and revoke codes when a cleaner, tenant, contractor, or guest no longer needs access.
Verdict: The lowest-risk mainstream pick for an Apple household that values dependable access management over novelty features.
Are AI security alerts worth paying for?
First identify what the product actually analyzes. A useful alert comparison separates three levels:
| Alert type | What it tells you | Typical requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Basic access alert | Locked or unlocked status, code used, remote access, low battery, failed operation, or offline status | Lock app; sometimes cloud connectivity |
| Video or detection alert | Motion, person, visitor, doorbell press, or recorded clip | Camera-equipped lock and possibly cloud storage |
| Anomaly-style alert | Repeated failed codes, repeated biometric failures, unusual timing, tamper events, or a suspicious sequence | Product-specific analytics; do not assume it exists |
“AI learning” in a fingerprint sensor generally means adaptive biometric matching. It should not be described as threat prediction. Similarly, a camera’s person-detection notification is useful event classification, but it is not proof of criminal intent.

Lockly Visage advertises real-time alerts, low-battery alerts, auto-locking, access logs, and remote control. Lockly Vision adds live video, intercom, recorded video, and visitor notifications. Those functions may improve awareness, but the buyer should check which alerts are generated locally, which require Wi-Fi or a cloud account, and which video or history features require a subscription.
Is geofenced unlocking safe?
Automatic unlocking based only on a phone’s location deserves caution. Location permissions can be disabled, GPS updates can be delayed, low-power settings can interfere, and a phone may be left at home, carried by a child, or used by a guest. A household automation service or internet connection can also be unavailable.
A safer configuration is to use geofencing for a notification, exterior lighting, or preparing the smart-home system, then require deliberate confirmation through a keypad, fingerprint, phone tap, or other local action. If you enable automatic unlocking:
- Use the smallest practical geofence.
- Require the authorized device to be present, not merely another household member’s location.
- Prefer UWB or a deliberate confirmation where supported.
- Keep a keypad and physical-key fallback available.
- Test arrival, departure, delayed location updates, a dead phone, and multiple household members.
- Disable the feature if the door opens onto a public corridor or sidewalk and the approach zone cannot be controlled.
Aqara’s U400 is better described as UWB hands-free unlocking than conventional geofencing. It can be more precise, but it remains dependent on supported Apple devices, software, and a Thread-enabled Apple Home hub.
Security, privacy, and installation matter more than the feature list
Biometric and video privacy
Before enrolling a face or fingerprint, find out where templates are stored, whether processing occurs locally or in the cloud, how users are deleted, whether logs identify the credential used, and whether the biometric feature can be disabled. Lockly says Visage facial data is encrypted and stored on the device; treat that as an attributed manufacturer claim.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →For a video lock, also check recording retention, subscription requirements, account-sharing controls, two-factor authentication, firmware updates, and whether the camera captures shared property. A smart lock can reveal household routines through access history and visitor video even when no security incident occurs.
Mechanical security is separate from electronic access control
A smart lock does not prevent forced entry simply because it has biometrics, app encryption, Matter, or a high-quality keypad. Evaluate the deadbolt, cylinder, strike plate, door frame, and installation. A weak frame, short screws, or a warped door can undermine an expensive lock.
Do not use “hack-proof” without qualification. Lockly uses that wording for PIN Genie’s randomized keypad; changing the button layout can reduce shoulder-surfing and visible code-pattern risks, but it does not address every electronic, physical, or account attack.
Battery and outage resilience
For every model, confirm:
- Battery type and manufacturer-claimed runtime.
- How Wi-Fi, video, cold weather, and frequent operation affect runtime.
- Low-battery warning behavior.
- External emergency power and its connector.
- Physical-key fallback.
- What remains functional without Wi-Fi or cloud access.
- What happens if the phone is dead or lost.
- Whether installation requires recalibration after the door is adjusted.
A lock that binds against the strike plate may drain batteries quickly or fail to auto-lock. Correct door alignment before judging the electronics.

Check the door before ordering
Confirm that the product fits your existing single-cylinder deadbolt, rather than a mortise or multipoint system. Measure door thickness, backset, bore-hole dimensions, and the existing deadbolt geometry. Check exterior exposure, rental restrictions, and whether the product replaces the complete deadbolt or only the interior thumb-turn.
Renters should obtain written permission where required. A retrofit design may preserve an existing exterior key cylinder, but the exact model and current availability must be verified before purchase.
Installation and setup checklist
- Measure first: Record door thickness, backset, bore size, deadbolt type, and available clearance.
- Fix alignment: The bolt should move smoothly with the door open and closed before the smart lock is installed.
- Install according to the exact manual: Do not assume two models in the same product family use identical parts.
- Update firmware and apps: Record the app version and firmware if troubleshooting or documenting a setup.
- Secure the account: Use a unique password and enable two-factor authentication when available.
- Create individual credentials: Give household members, guests, cleaners, and contractors separate codes with appropriate schedules.
- Configure alerts deliberately: Confirm what each notification means instead of labeling every push alert “AI.”
- Test without internet: Check keypad, fingerprint, facial, NFC, physical-key, and local operation as applicable.
- Test emergency access: Practice the low-battery and external-power procedure before an actual lockout.
- Test automations cautiously: Try geofencing or UWB with every authorized phone and watch, including a dead phone and a person who is not entering.
Which smart lock should you buy?
- Buy Lockly Visage Zeno if facial recognition is the defining requirement and you accept biometric privacy and recognition-failure trade-offs.
- Buy Lockly Vision Zeno if a video doorbell, intercom, visitor notifications, and remote viewing matter more than simplicity.
- Buy Aqara U400 if you have the specified Apple devices and Thread-enabled Apple Home hub and want UWB hands-free entry.
- Buy Schlage Sense Pro if premium Matter/Thread/Aliro positioning and Apple Home Key matter more than biometrics.
- Buy Schlage Encode Plus if you want a mainstream Apple-friendly Wi-Fi lock with unique codes and alerts, without a camera or biometric reader.
For a construction-focused replacement project, treat the lock as one part of the door assembly. Verify compatibility and alignment first, then choose the advanced feature that solves a real access problem. The best smart lock is not the one with the longest feature list; it is the one that still gives residents a reliable, private fallback when the phone, battery, Wi-Fi, or recognition system fails.
