For raking ordinary leaves and light debris off a lawn, either a plastic or spring-steel fan-style leaf rake can do the job. Choose based on the rake’s flexibility, construction, upkeep and the debris you need to move—not on material alone. A rigid metal garden rake is a different tool, made for heavier work such as moving or leveling soil.
First, distinguish a leaf rake from a garden rake
“Metal rake” can mean either a flexible, fan-shaped leaf rake with spring-steel tines or a rigid bow or garden rake with short, stout tines. These are not interchangeable. Long, flexible tines gather lightweight leaves and twigs; rigid tines are suited to heavier materials and soil work. Penn State Extension explains the distinction in its guide to choosing the right tool, while UGA Cooperative Extension describes the garden rake as a tool for grooming and smoothing, rather than collecting leaves.
For lawn cleanup, compare fan-style leaf rakes—plastic and spring steel—not a plastic leaf rake against a rigid bow rake.
How plastic and spring-steel leaf rakes compare
| Consideration | Plastic or polypropylene leaf rake | Spring-steel leaf rake |
|---|---|---|
| Leaves and light lawn debris | Suitable for ordinary lawn cleanup. | Suitable for ordinary lawn cleanup. |
| Rust | Polypropylene tines do not rust like metal. Any metal reinforcement may still rust if neglected. | Steel can rust, so inspect it and protect it before long storage. |
| Flex and construction | Look for strong wire reinforcement across the tines and around the handle attachment. | Good spring-steel tines can return toward position after bending; repeated straightening may leave a tine prone to bending again. |
| Storage | Store indoors to reduce sun-related degradation of the plastic. | Virginia Cooperative Extension advises coating steel rakes with oil before long storage. |
| Heavier or specialized tasks | A light leaf rake is not a substitute for a soil-working rake. | A sturdy steel rake may be suitable for manual thatch removal, but choose the rake and method for that specific lawn task. |
These are material and tool-care distinctions, not a universal durability ranking. Extension guidance does not establish that one material always lasts longer or is gentler on grass.

What works best for ordinary lawn cleanup?
For leaves and other light debris, either material can work when the rake is the flexible, fan-shaped lawn type. Illinois Extension says that for this use, “any of them should be fine” in its answer about lawn-rake materials. Virginia Cooperative Extension describes lawn rakes as tools for collecting leaves, clippings and debris without damaging sod when used appropriately.
Use a sweeping motion across the lawn rather than dragging the rake aggressively through the turf. The goal is to gather loose material without scraping or pulling at the grass. UC Agriculture and Natural Resources likewise describes flexible metal or plastic leaf-rake bristles as suitable for collecting leaves and twigs without overly disturbing soil; its garden tools guide also notes that adjustable-handle designs can help where storage space is limited.

Choose by debris, construction and upkeep
Choose polypropylene if rust resistance matters
Polypropylene tines do not rust like metal tines. Check that the rake has strong reinforcement across the tines and where the head meets the handle. Store it indoors: Virginia Cooperative Extension recommends indoor storage to reduce photodegradation, or sun-related deterioration of plastic.
Choose spring steel if you value recoverable flex
Spring-steel tines can flex and return toward position after substantial bending. Virginia Cooperative Extension puts it this way: “The tines on a good steel lawn rake are made of spring steel, and they have the ability to snap back into position even when they are severely bent during use.” That describes good spring-steel lawn rakes, not every metal rake or every tine. Check for bent or damaged tines, and protect the rake from rust before storing it for a long period.

Use a different rake for soil or heavier materials
If you are leveling soil, preparing a seedbed or moving rocks, compare rigid garden or bow rakes designed for those jobs. A flexible leaf rake is made to collect lightweight debris, not to do the work of a rigid soil tool.

Manual thatch removal is a tougher, specialized task than gathering leaves. Maryland Extension recommends a dethatching machine or sturdy steel rake for manual removal during active grass growth. That does not mean a rigid garden rake is automatically the right choice for every lawn: Illinois Extension cautions that using a garden rake may remove only false thatch. Identify the lawn problem and follow a task-specific method rather than treating leaf raking and dethatching as the same job.

A practical buying checklist
- Match the rake to the task: a flexible fan-style leaf rake for leaves and light lawn debris; a rigid garden or bow rake for heavier soil work.
- Check tine flexibility and the strength of the head-to-handle connection.
- For polypropylene, look for reinforcement and plan to store the rake indoors.
- For spring steel, inspect the tines and protect the rake from rust during long storage.
- Choose a handle and rake weight that feel comfortable to use; available extension guidance does not establish a universal ergonomic winner.
