Meranti is a commercial timber category, not a single uniform species. It commonly refers to several Southeast Asian dipterocarp hardwoods associated with Shorea. That is why meranti can be useful for furniture, joinery, cabinetry, veneer and plywood while still varying significantly in colour, density, machining behaviour and outdoor durability.
What is meranti?
Meranti is a commercial timber name, not the name of one uniform species. In the building and woodworking trades, it usually refers to several Southeast Asian hardwoods associated mainly with the dipterocarp family and, in particular, Shorea-related timbers. The name is widely used for solid wood, veneer, plywood and finished components.

That distinction matters when specifying or buying it. Two products both labelled “meranti” may differ substantially in colour, density, machining behaviour, durability and suitability for exterior work. The label alone is not a complete technical specification.
Meranti is commonly associated with timber from Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines. Related trade terms include lauan, particularly for Southeast Asian plywood, and Philippine mahogany. Neither term should automatically be read as a precise botanical identification. “Philippine mahogany,” for example, is a trade expression and does not mean the material is true mahogany from the mahogany genera.

Meranti types: red, white and yellow groups
Meranti is often divided into broad commercial groups:
- Red meranti: commonly divided further into light red and dark red groups. Species, density and colour can vary within both descriptions.
- White meranti: generally refers to lighter-coloured members of the commercial group, but the term still covers more than one species.
- Yellow meranti: a further trade group with its own range of colour and performance characteristics.
- Balau and related groups: sometimes discussed alongside the principal meranti categories, although regional trade practice and botanical classification do not always align neatly.
These group names broadly reflect botanical sections and commercial characteristics, but they are not interchangeable with a full species identification. Classification can differ according to region, supplier, density and market practice.
Modern botanical work has also revised relationships within the Shorea-related groups. A name that appears in an old timber description may be a synonym or an earlier classification rather than the currently accepted botanical name. For that reason, a project specification should record the supplier’s stated species or commercial group where that information is available, rather than relying on “meranti” alone.
What does meranti look like?
There is no single meranti colour. Boards may range from pale or pinkish tones through reddish-brown to darker red-brown shades. Freshly machined timber can look different from older or finished material, and colour may change with exposure to light and the chosen finish.
Grain is generally straight to interlocked, although the exact appearance depends on the species and board. Texture and density also vary. Some material has a relatively even, workable appearance suitable for painted or clear-finished joinery; other boards may have more visible variation or a less uniform surface.
When a particular appearance is important, approve a sample or inspect the actual batch. A catalogue photograph or the word “red” in a product listing is not enough to guarantee the colour of the delivered timber.

Meranti properties and woodworking performance
Meranti is generally treated as a light hardwood or general-purpose hardwood timber. It is valued because it can provide a useful balance of workability, appearance and cost for interior construction and woodworking applications. However, its properties cannot be reduced to one universal hardness, density or durability rating.

Machining
Good-quality meranti can machine to a smooth surface and is commonly used for mouldings, joinery, cabinetry and architectural woodwork. Lower-density material may produce a woolly or fuzzy cut, particularly with blunt tools, unfavourable grain or aggressive feed rates.
- Use sharp, properly set cutting tools.
- Support the workpiece carefully, especially near edges and at the end of a cut.
- Take lighter finishing passes where the surface begins to tear or fuzz.
- Test routing, planing and sanding on an offcut before processing a visible component.
- Expect boards from different groups or suppliers to behave differently.
As with any timber, moisture condition, grain orientation, defects and board dimensions affect the result. “Meranti” is not a substitute for checking the actual stock.
Strength, stability and durability
Different meranti groups can have materially different density and mechanical performance. Do not use a generic meranti description to select structural members or to calculate a load-bearing design. For structural work, use the species or strength class, grading information and design values required by the applicable building standard.
Similarly, do not assign one universal outdoor service life to all meranti. Heartwood and sapwood can perform differently, and untreated durability varies between species. Sapwood may also be vulnerable to dry-wood termite attack. Preservative treatment is not necessarily uniform: sapwood may accept some treatments more readily than heartwood.

| Application | What to check |
|---|---|
| Furniture and cabinetry | Colour consistency, surface quality, moisture condition and the intended finish. |
| Architectural woodwork and joinery | Species or group, grade, machining quality, profile stability and whether the component is interior or exterior. |
| Mouldings and trim | Grain direction, defects, edge quality and the ability to hold a clean profile. |
| Paneling and interior finish work | Veneer or solid timber format, colour matching, substrate quality and finish compatibility. |
| Veneer | Face grade, thickness, backing, matching method and the substrate used behind it. |
| Plywood and sheet goods | Core construction, face species, adhesive rating, formaldehyde or emissions information where relevant, and the panel’s intended exposure class. |
| General utility work | Whether the material is being used for a non-structural purpose and whether its grade is suitable for the job. |
Meranti can also occur as a component in finished products, including some musical instruments. That does not make every meranti product suitable for the same application; the finished product’s complete specification remains decisive.
Is meranti suitable for outdoor use?
Sometimes, but “meranti” alone is not enough information to approve it for exterior exposure. Outdoor suitability depends on the particular species or group, the proportion of heartwood and sapwood, treatment, detailing, coating maintenance, moisture exposure and the severity of the environment.
Before specifying meranti outdoors, establish:
- Which group or species is being supplied? Red, white and yellow meranti are not one performance category.
- Is the timber treated? Ask what preservative was used, how it was applied and whether the treatment reaches the relevant parts of the board.
- Is it heartwood, sapwood or a mixture? Sapwood can have different treatment uptake and biological resistance from heartwood.
- What exposure will it face? Covered exterior joinery, fully exposed cladding, ground contact and persistently damp locations impose different demands.
- How will water be shed? Sound design, drainage, end-grain protection, ventilation and coating maintenance can be as important as the timber name.
For exposed work, obtain the supplier’s durability and treatment documentation and compare it with the project’s required use class. Do not infer a universal outdoor life from a sample board, a colour description or the fact that the timber is called a hardwood.
Meranti, lauan and plywood: are they the same?
No—not necessarily. “Lauan” is often used for plywood made from Southeast Asian woods associated with Shorea and related timbers. “Meranti” may describe solid lumber, veneer, plywood or a finished product. There can be overlap in trade usage, but a sheet labelled lauan is not automatically identical to every solid-meranti board.
For plywood, check the face and core species, panel grade, thickness, glue line, intended exposure and manufacturer’s technical data. A face veneer that resembles meranti does not by itself establish the entire panel’s composition or exterior suitability.
If you are sourcing material for a project, compare listings for meranti lumber separately from meranti veneer and lauan plywood. Those are different formats with different installation and performance considerations.

A species name does not prove that timber was responsibly harvested. Nor are “sustainable,” “legal” and “FSC-certified” interchangeable claims.
For an FSC claim, verify the certificate or licence information and confirm that it applies to the supplier, product and supply chain being purchased. The existence of a certified forest or a supplier that sells some certified products does not automatically certify every meranti board in the catalogue.
For larger construction purchases, require independently verifiable documentation appropriate to the project. A sensible FSC-certified meranti enquiry should identify the certificate holder, product scope and chain-of-custody details rather than relying on a logo or a general sustainability statement.

Meranti compared with true mahogany
Meranti is not automatically true mahogany. The trade phrase “Philippine mahogany” has historically been used for some Southeast Asian timbers, but trade naming and botanical identity are different things. If a project calls for mahogany, specify the accepted botanical or commercial species, grade and performance requirements instead of treating meranti as an equivalent substitute.

Meranti specification checklist
- Record the exact commercial group or species where available.
- State solid timber, veneer, plywood or composite format.
- Specify dimensions, grade and moisture requirements.
- Do not use generic meranti data for structural design.
- For exterior work, confirm durability, treatment, heartwood/sapwood content and exposure suitability.
- Inspect samples when colour or surface quality matters.
- Separate lauan plywood specifications from solid-meranti specifications.
- Verify FSC, legality and sustainability documentation for the actual product purchased.
- Retain supplier records and technical data with the project documentation.
Bottom line
Meranti is a useful Southeast Asian timber-market category covering several related hardwoods, especially Shorea-associated groups. It is commonly used for furniture, cabinetry, joinery, mouldings, paneling, veneer, plywood and general utility work. Its main limitation is not a lack of uses but a lack of uniformity: the name does not guarantee one colour, density, hardness, durability or outdoor performance. Identify the actual group or species, confirm the product format and grade, and require evidence for treatment and responsible-sourcing claims before specifying it.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is meranti wood?
Meranti is a commercial timber name for several Southeast Asian hardwoods, mainly associated with Shorea-related dipterocarp timbers. It is not a guarantee of one botanical species or one set of properties.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIs meranti good for outdoor use?
Meranti may be suitable for some covered or treated exterior applications, but suitability depends on the species or group, heartwood and sapwood, treatment, exposure and detailing. Do not approve it outdoors from the trade name alone.
Is lauan the same as meranti?
Lauan is a related trade term often used for Southeast Asian plywood. There is overlap with meranti, but lauan plywood is not automatically identical to every solid-meranti product. Check the panel’s face, core, adhesive and exposure rating.
Is meranti the same as mahogany?
No. “Philippine mahogany” is a trade expression and does not mean the timber is true mahogany. Specify the actual species or accepted commercial grade when mahogany is required.
What should I check before buying meranti?
Ask for the commercial group or species, format, dimensions, grade, moisture condition, origin, intended-use limitations and any treatment, legality or certification documentation. Verify FSC claims for the actual product and supply chain.
The Bottom Line
Meranti is a trade category, not one species. It can be an effective material for interior joinery, furniture, cabinetry, veneer and plywood, but the particular group, grade and format determine its performance. Treat outdoor use, structural use and sustainability claims as specification questions—not assumptions based on the word “meranti.”
