Meet the Daffodahlia: A Striking Dahlia Form, Not a Daffodil Hybrid

The Daffodahlia’s daffodil-like center is an unusual reported dahlia form, not evidence of a hybrid. Its stability and availability as named stock remain unconfirmed.

The Daffodahlia is a grower-given name for an unusual dahlia bloom with a trumpet-like center—not a cross between a daffodil and a dahlia. The form was reported at a Washington flower farm in 2024, but the available farm updates do not establish that it has become a stable cultivar or that named Daffodahlia stock is currently for sale.

What is a Daffodahlia?

Daffodahlia is the farm’s nickname for a dahlia whose center resembles a daffodil trumpet. The flower was described as a ball dahlia with an unusual central form. The resemblance inspired the name; it does not establish that the plant contains daffodil genetics.

In a 2024 interview, Cattle & Cut Flowers grower Kelsey Hall put the misconception plainly: “I did not take a daffodil and a dahlia and mash their genetics together.” The farm describes the bloom as a mutation, or sport, that appeared unexpectedly on a dahlia variety it had grown for years.

How many plants showed the unusual form?

In a report published October 3, 2024, Homes & Gardens attributed the initial observations to Hall: six of 35 plants showed varying degrees of the form, and about 40 unusual blooms had been observed. Those figures describe one farm’s observations at that time; they are not a scientific estimate of how often the form occurs in dahlias. Homes & Gardens’ 2024 report

Is the Daffodahlia a stable variety?

That has not been established by the available farm updates. When the flower was reported in 2024, Hall was testing whether the form would return and could be stabilized, including by saving seed and taking cuttings. The farm’s Daffodahlia Updates page continues to provide topic updates and describes the flower as a mutation, but the reviewed information does not confirm a stable, market-ready cultivar.

A striking bloom on some plants is not, by itself, proof that the same appearance can be reliably reproduced. The key unanswered question for gardeners is whether propagation will consistently preserve the distinctive center.

Does it bloom in spring like a daffodil?

The name describes the flower’s appearance, not its growing season. The farm’s FAQ asks whether it blooms in early spring or in summer like a dahlia, but the available page information does not establish a specific bloom time for this mutation. It is safest not to infer a Daffodahlia-specific season from the name alone.

Can you buy Daffodahlia tubers?

Cattle & Cut Flowers currently lists dahlia tubers generally, but that listing does not identify any of the stock as Daffodahlia. A general dahlia tuber listing is not evidence that this named form is available. Check the farm’s updates and sales pages for an explicit Daffodahlia listing before treating it as a purchasable cultivar.

If you want to grow dahlias while following this story, ordinary dahlia tubers are a separate option; they should not be represented as verified Daffodahlia stock. The farm also offers a general Dahlia Grower’s Playbook, a digital guide covering topics such as planting, propagation, and tuber storage. Neither general resource confirms the availability or cultivation requirements of this particular mutation.

What gardeners can reasonably conclude

  • The Daffodahlia is a reported, unusually shaped dahlia—not a daffodil-dahlia cross.
  • The original reported count was limited to observations at one Washington farm in 2024.
  • Reliable propagation and cultivar stability remain unresolved in the available information.
  • General dahlia tubers and growing guidance are not substitutes for verified Daffodahlia stock or mutation-specific growing advice.
