Primitive Pete is the hapless character in The ABC of Hand Tools, a Disney-made training film created for General Motors. The 1945 film shows Pete misusing everyday tools before demonstrating the correct approach. It is an instructive historical artifact—not a substitute for current tool-specific instructions or safety guidance.

Who is Primitive Pete?

Primitive Pete was created for General Motors as the central character in a training film about hand tools. Rather than begin with a list of rules, the film uses Pete’s mistakes to show what can go wrong, then contrasts them with the proper way to handle and care for tools. D23 says General Motors used the film as a training tool for many years and that several versions of a printed booklet also featured the character. D23’s archive response records the history.

What tools does the film cover?

The ERIC-hosted catalog entry for The ABC of Hand Tools describes two parts, covering common tools used for a range of tasks.

Film part Tools listed in the catalog
Part I Hammers, screwdrivers, pliers, and wrenches
Part II Files, saws, chisels, planes, drills, and punches

The catalog says Primitive Pete demonstrates typical misuse before the correct method is shown. The entry is in the ERIC-hosted Instructional Resources Branch: Catalogue of Videos and Films, Kindergarten to Grade 6.

Why do sources give both 1945 and 1946?

The dates refer to different milestones, not a contradiction. The ERIC catalog dates the film to 1945; D23 says it was delivered to General Motors in 1946. D23’s wording is: “The film was delivered to General Motors in 1946, and was used by them as a training tool for many years.”

What can a modern builder take from it?

The film’s basic teaching device remains easy to recognize: notice an incorrect use, then compare it with the intended technique. That can prompt useful questions when learning an unfamiliar tool—what task is it designed for, how should it be held, and what care does it need?
