Medina County Historical Society is raising $1.2 million for a new History Center beside the McDowell-Phillips House Museum in Medina, Ohio. The planned 3,000-square-foot building would add exhibit, event and collection-support space that the society’s existing house museums cannot provide. Although the project has been presented as an aggressive build-and-open program, available 2025 reports do not verify a physical groundbreaking or a firm opening date.

Why the society says it needs a new building

The John Smart and McDowell-Phillips house museums preserve Medina County history, but their layouts limit large special exhibitions and public programs. The society also stores artifacts in crowded attics. The proposed History Center is intended to move flexible public uses and collection-support functions into a purpose-built facility while allowing the historic houses to remain focused on their original settings.

Brian Feron, president of the Medina County Historical Society, described the planned addition this way: “With this expansion, we look forward to increasing our history space by an impressive 3,000 square feet.”

Cost, fundraising and what the $1.2 million represents

The society launched a capital campaign in 2025 with a fundraising goal of $1.2 million, according to the Medina County Historical Society’s 2025 campaign materials. Nearly half of that goal had been raised when the society published its summer 2025 newsletter. That figure is a campaign-progress update, not a final construction cost or a statement that the project is fully financed.

An Ohio General Assembly record from 2015 lists a separate $100,000 Medina County Historical Society project allocation. Because that is an older legislative record, it is historical context and should not be treated as proof of current funding for the new center.

Where the History Center will be built

The center is planned on the grounds of the McDowell-Phillips House Museum in Medina, Ohio. Medina Weekly reported a barn-style design intended to complement the historic house rather than compete with it.

Opening target and what is not yet confirmed

The society announced an aggressive plan to open the center in the following year as part of Medina County’s America 250 celebrations. In the 2025 planning context, that means a target opening period in 2026. The sources available for this report do not give a firm opening day.

They also do not verify the date physical construction began, identify a contractor, or establish a final construction budget. Planning documents, fundraising updates and a design presentation demonstrate an active project, but they are not the same as a dated groundbreaking notice. A confirmed construction start should therefore be reported only when the society, a contractor or a dated public record documents it.

Why the expansion matters for visitors and collections

If completed as described, the center would give the society a flexible venue for exhibits and events without forcing those activities into rooms designed as historic domestic interiors. Dedicated storage and a donation area could also improve how incoming materials are handled and reduce pressure on attic spaces. The covered outdoor areas, kitchen and parking changes are designed to make the campus more practical for group visits as well as routine museum attendance.

The Ohio Library Association describes it as a comprehensive, readable county history created to preserve the county’s past for future generations; availability should be checked before purchase.
