On September 9, 2026, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) reportedly carried out 34 demolition actions across its 12 zones, sealed 17 properties, issued 22 show-cause notices and passed four demolition orders. News On AIR reported the figures; no primary MCD release or dataset confirming those totals was identified. The intensified drive followed the Satya Niketan building collapse and a direction to inspect paying-guest (PG) accommodation and building records.
What MCD reportedly did on September 9
News On AIR reported that MCD stepped up enforcement against dangerous buildings, alleged unauthorized construction and violations of the Master Plan of Delhi and building bye-laws across all 12 zones. Its account gives the following figures for September 9, 2026:

These counts describe different enforcement actions and should not be treated as interchangeable. A notice is not a demolition order, and a reported demolition action is not necessarily the same measure as an order passed. News On AIR also reported that on September 8 MCD carried out 17 demolitions and sealed five properties; those are figures for the previous day, not part of the September 9 totals. News On AIR’s September 9 report provides the underlying account. The Indian Express separately reported the September 9 totals of 34 demolition actions and 17 sealed properties. Its September 10 coverage is another media account, not an MCD dataset.

News On AIR said the action followed the building collapse in Satya Niketan and a direction from Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta to act against illegal structures. The direction also called for inspections of PG accommodation to check for unauthorized construction and examine building records. The reports establish the stated trigger and enforcement focus; they do not establish that every property flagged, served with a notice or inspected was unlawful.

What is known about the PG-building survey
News On AIR reported that officials had identified approximately 1,243 buildings operating PG facilities, with approximately 24,000 occupants, and that the survey was still underway. These are approximate figures reported while inspections continued—not a final census, a tally of violations, or a finding that all identified buildings breached construction rules. The report does not provide final survey findings.
What a notice, sealing or demolition order means for a property
The reported categories refer to distinct stages or forms of action. A show-cause notice gives its recipient an opportunity to respond to an allegation or proposed action; it does not, by itself, prove a violation. A sealing action restricts access or use, while a demolition order is a separate formal decision from the physical carrying out of demolition work. The news reports do not provide case files or enough detail to determine the status or outcome of any individual property.

MCD’s circular index lists material on building-plan compliance, provisions in MPD-2021 and UBBL-2016, and recovery of demolition charges. That index points to relevant official documents but cannot determine whether a particular building or addition is authorized. MCD’s EODB circular index lists, among other items, a July 16, 2024 circular on compliance with building-plan sanction conditions before construction starts; a February 15, 2024 item on green-building provisions under MPD-2021 and UBBL-2016; and an August 2, 2022 item on rates and procedure for recovering demolition charges. The index entry is not a substitute for reading the relevant circular or reviewing the property’s records.

Why the legal position can depend on the property and case
A Delhi High Court judgment dated January 19, 2026 records an MCD matter involving a work-stop notice, sealing and demolition activity. It also discusses the National Capital Territory of Delhi Laws (Special Provisions) Second (Amendment) Act, 2023, which the judgment describes as maintaining the status quo as of June 1, 2014 for certain unauthorized-colony developments through December 31, 2026. This is a case-specific account of a statutory provision, not blanket protection for all unauthorized construction. It does not resolve the legal position of another property. What the reports establish—and what they do not
- Reported actions: News On AIR gave September 9 counts, and The Indian Express independently reported the demolition-action and sealing totals for that date.
- Not confirmed by a primary MCD release in the available reporting: the full set of campaign totals and the PG survey figures.
- Not established: the final survey result, whether each inspected or noticed property violated rules, or the status of any individual property.
- Not interchangeable: figures from different dates or reports should not be added unless their dates, time windows and counting definitions match.
