Matter 1.4 Made Sharing Smart-Home Devices Easier—but Didn’t Fix Everything

Matter 1.4 made it possible for compatible platforms to simplify sharing devices across ecosystems. The workflow is optional, and it does not sync settings or guarantee feature parity.

Matter 1.4, released on November 7, 2024, introduced Enhanced Multi-Admin: an optional way for a compatible smart-home platform to let you approve sharing Matter devices with other ecosystems in one consent step, instead of sharing each accessory manually. It can reduce setup friction, but it is not an automatic feature of every Matter product or platform—and it does not synchronize settings across apps. As of August 18, 2026, Matter 1.6 is newer.

What was difficult before Matter 1.4?

Matter lets compatible devices work with controllers from different smart-home ecosystems, but interoperability does not by itself make setup effortless. A device first has to be commissioned—the process of securely adding it to a controller, such as Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings or Home Assistant. To use it in another ecosystem, users may then need to find a sharing option, generate or enter a new commissioning code, and repeat that process for each additional platform.

  • Controller: The platform, app or hub that commissions and controls Matter devices.
  • Multi-admin: The same Matter device is made available to more than one controller or ecosystem.
  • Bridge: A hub can expose devices using another technology, such as a proprietary radio, to Matter. Those bridged devices are not necessarily Matter devices themselves.
  • Thread Border Router: Infrastructure that connects a Thread mesh network to the home IP network.

The Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) described Matter 1.4’s management-related changes in its November 7, 2024 announcement. The release addresses some repeated sharing and Thread-infrastructure friction; it does not make every device, feature or ecosystem interchangeable.

What Enhanced Multi-Admin changes

Enhanced Multi-Admin gives platforms and device makers a way to streamline the consent and commissioning steps for using Matter accessories in multiple ecosystems. For example, after adding a Matter plug to one platform, a compatible implementation could let you approve access for another platform without manually repeating the sharing procedure separately for every accessory.

The intended benefit is a simpler path for sharing existing devices and, depending on the implementation, newly added ones. The CSA allows flexibility in how vendors and platforms implement and present the experience. It is optional: buying a Matter 1.4-era device does not guarantee that the feature appears in the apps you use. The relevant device and both ecosystems need compatible support.

Multi-admin grants access to a device across ecosystem controllers. It is not a shared household account or universal synchronization layer. Names, rooms, scenes, automations, permissions and settings can still differ between apps. Nor does adding a device to a second platform guarantee that platform exposes every feature the manufacturer provides.

What Matter 1.4 does not fix

“Matter-certified” means a product or implementation conforms to the relevant standard; it is not a promise of identical app support or feature parity. The device, its firmware, the controller, the app and the platform’s support for the particular device type all affect what works. Apple’s Matter integration documentation and Google’s Matter release notes illustrate that platform support is implemented and updated separately.

  • Feature gaps: One ecosystem may expose fewer device controls or attributes than another, even when both can control the same accessory.
  • Vendor apps: A manufacturer app may still be needed for firmware updates, advanced settings or proprietary functions. Matter does not eliminate those apps.
  • Controllers and hubs: Matter requires a compatible controller. A Thread-based accessory also needs access to Thread infrastructure, including a Thread Border Router.
  • Network faults: Poor Wi-Fi, broken IPv6, multicast DNS (mDNS) filtering, guest-network isolation, VLANs or firewall rules can interfere with discovery and commissioning.
  • Bridged devices: A Matter bridge can make some non-Matter products visible to Matter platforms, but the resulting controls may not match the manufacturer’s app.
  • Platform timing: A standard’s release does not mean all products, apps and hubs implement it immediately. Support can arrive later through software or firmware updates.

How Matter 1.4’s router and Thread changes fit

Matter 1.4 introduced Home Router and Access Point (HRAP) capabilities for qualifying infrastructure products, including routers, modems and Wi-Fi access points. A certified HRAP can combine Wi-Fi access-point functions with Thread Border Router capability and provide standardized handling of Thread network credentials. The aim is to make it easier to add Thread devices to an existing network and reduce the risk of separate, fragmented Thread meshes.

HRAP is a capability and certification framework, not a feature of every router released after Matter 1.4. Replacing a router will not automatically improve a Matter setup; the particular model must support the relevant certified capabilities, and the rest of the home still needs compatible controllers and devices. Matter 1.4 and Thread 1.4 are separate standards with coincidentally matching version numbers, not synchronized releases, the CSA notes in its Matter 1.4 announcement.

Other changes in Matter 1.4

Accessory management was only one part of the release. The CSA also highlighted Device Energy Management capabilities that let devices respond to energy forecasts and power-management needs, including a mode for device-specific, local or grid-wide optimization. The release added energy-related device capabilities, Mounted On/Off and Mounted Dimmable Load Control, occupancy-sensing enhancements, and improvements to presets, automation and core infrastructure. These features matter most when device manufacturers and platforms implement them; their presence in a standard does not ensure that every product or app exposes them.

What to check before buying a Matter device

Choose for the functions and ecosystem you need, not the Matter version printed in isolation. Matter operates over Wi-Fi, Ethernet and Thread; the transport determines some of the infrastructure requirements. A Matter-over-Wi-Fi device generally uses the home Wi-Fi network, while a Matter-over-Thread device needs Thread infrastructure. The Tapo Matter overview describes the common transports and the need for compatible controllers.

  • Device and transport: Check the supported Matter version and whether the product uses Wi-Fi, Ethernet or Thread.
  • Controller requirements: Confirm that you have a compatible controller, and a Thread Border Router if the device uses Thread.
  • Platform and features: Confirm support for the device type and the specific functions you care about, such as energy monitoring, lock codes, alarms or advanced sensor data.
  • Direct or bridged support: Establish whether the accessory itself supports Matter or whether a vendor hub or bridge makes it available to Matter ecosystems.
  • Sharing and updates: Ask whether the platforms you plan to use support the sharing workflow you want, and how the manufacturer provides firmware updates.
  • Network and region: Check for local network requirements, including IPv6 and multicast discovery, plus regional compatibility for matters such as electrical standards, thermostat wiring and locks.

Wi-Fi can be a straightforward fit for mains-powered devices without requiring a Thread mesh, but it uses Wi-Fi airtime and depends on the home network. Thread is a low-power mesh suited to battery devices, but requires Border Router infrastructure; credential sharing and compatibility between ecosystems can still complicate setup. Eve, for example, describes its products as Matter over Thread and notes the need for compatible hubs on its Matter product page.

Matter is useful when cross-platform flexibility and standard interoperability are priorities. A vendor-native ecosystem may be a better fit when you depend on proprietary features, advanced camera or security functions, or a manufacturer’s hub. Existing Zigbee or Z-Wave installations do not need to be discarded: a hybrid home using established devices behind bridges and Matter products where cross-platform access helps can be practical.

A cautious commissioning and sharing sequence

Exact app labels and menus differ by platform and can change with software updates, so there is no single path that fits Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings and Home Assistant. A useful general sequence is:

  • Easy Setup with Wi-Fi or Ethernet: Get started in minutes using Wi-Fi or a wired Ethernet connection for apartments, houses, and expanding smart home systems - Z-Wave not supported
  • Automations That Work for You: Create custom routines for security, lighting, comfort, and energy savings. Many local automations continue working even if your internet goes offline
  • Wide Device Compatibility: Connect compatible smart devices from Aeotec and many other brands to build a unified system for lighting, voice control, energy management, and climate settings
  1. Update the accessory firmware and the apps and software for the ecosystems you plan to use.
  2. Confirm that a compatible Matter controller is available; for a Thread device, confirm that a Thread Border Router is active.
  3. Commission the device in the primary ecosystem using its Matter QR code or numeric setup code.
  4. In that platform, look for an option such as Share, Add to another ecosystem or Multi-Admin, if available.
  5. Approve the sharing request, then complete the second ecosystem’s commissioning flow.
  6. Check that the device appears in both platforms and test the functions you intend to use in each.
  7. Keep the manufacturer app available for firmware updates and vendor-specific settings unless the manufacturer confirms another supported update path.

Apple describes Matter accessory integration through Apple Home and compatible apps in its developer documentation; the consumer workflow depends on compatible Apple Home hubs and software. Other ecosystems likewise maintain their own support and workflows.

If sharing or commissioning fails

Check the device type and desired feature support in both ecosystems before treating a failed setup as a Matter incompatibility. Then work through the local network and commissioning conditions:

  • Update the accessory, controller, phone and smart-home apps.
  • Keep the phone on the same local network during commissioning and temporarily disable guest-network isolation if it blocks device discovery.
  • Check that IPv6 and multicast DNS traffic are not blocked by router, VLAN or firewall settings.
  • For Thread accessories, confirm that Border Routers are online and that the phone and controller can reach the relevant Thread network.
  • If possible, commission through the accessory’s primary ecosystem first, then share it with the other platform.
  • If the accessory is already in several fabrics (Matter’s separate controller networks), remove only the failed fabric where possible rather than resetting everything.
  • Use a factory reset only as a last resort: it can erase fabric memberships and device-specific configuration, and may require setting up automations again.

If the device works in one platform but not another, the cause may be that platform’s implementation or support for the device type, rather than a general Matter incompatibility. Network and ecosystem issues do not have one universal fix.

Does Matter 1.4 justify an upgrade?

For someone buying a device now, the key question is whether the exact accessory, controllers and target platforms support the needed functions—not whether the accessory merely claims Matter 1.4 compatibility. Matter 1.4 was a meaningful step toward easier multi-platform management, but as of August 18, 2026 it is a milestone in a newer release sequence, not the current version. A router upgrade makes sense only when a specific model’s certified HRAP capabilities address a real Thread or network need; an accessory upgrade makes sense when its supported features and platforms match the household. A working Zigbee, Z-Wave or vendor-native system does not need replacing just because Matter exists.
