Yes—but with an important qualification. Matter 1.4, released by the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) on November 7, 2024, added standardised device types and energy-management capabilities for solar systems, batteries, heat pumps and water heaters. It also expanded electric-vehicle charging support.
That does not mean an existing rooftop solar array or heat pump automatically works in Alexa, Google Home, Apple Home or SmartThings. Matter support must be implemented and certified by the manufacturer, supported by the chosen smart-home platform, and exposed through its app. In many installations, the Matter-connected device will be an inverter, thermostat, gateway or energy-management controller—not the solar panels or HVAC equipment themselves.

What Matter 1.4 actually changed
Matter 1.4 expanded the standard beyond familiar smart-home products such as lights, locks and sensors. Its new energy-related device types include:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Solar power systems: solar inverters, individual photovoltaic panels, panel arrays and hybrid solar-and-battery systems.
- Battery storage: home battery walls, storage units and battery energy-storage systems.
- Heat pumps: treated as significant, potentially flexible electrical loads for heating and cooling.
- Water heaters: equipment that can potentially shift consumption to more favourable periods.
- Electric-vehicle charging: improved support for charging preferences, state-of-charge reporting and bidirectional-charging scenarios.
The CSA describes these changes as part of a broader energy-management model. Matter 1.4 is therefore less about adding another remote-control button and more about giving different energy devices a common way to report information and participate in coordinated control.

The bigger idea: coordinating energy around the home
A future Matter-enabled energy-management system could coordinate solar generation, battery storage, heat-pump operation, water heating, EV charging, electricity tariffs and grid conditions.
For example, a system might use periods of strong solar production to charge a home battery, heat water, preheat or precool the building, or charge an electric vehicle. It could then reduce flexible loads during expensive or high-demand periods. A battery might discharge to reduce household imports, subject to reserve settings and local rules.

Matter provides an interoperability layer; it does not automatically lower energy bills. Actual savings depend on the tariff, weather, insulation, equipment efficiency, control software, battery capacity and the homeowner’s settings.
The CSA has outlined this broader goal in its discussion of energy-smart appliances and grid-friendly integration: Matter and grid-friendly energy management.
What could a Matter-enabled heat pump do?
A Matter-connected heat pump could expose common thermostat and energy-management functions to a compatible controller. Depending on the product and platform, that might include:

- ⚡ REAL-TIME ENERGY DATA: Connect SEM-Meter device via 2.4GHz WiFi to monitor energy usage, with an accuracy range of 1%. View usage in real time through Android/Apple software. Statistics of power usage in now/day/week/month/year format: the validity period of hourly exported data is 90 days, and the exported data of day/month/year data is permanent, available at any time Export from application.
- Reporting whether the system is heating, cooling, idle or using auxiliary heat.
- Providing temperature and, where supported, energy-use information.
- Adjusting schedules and set points.
- Preheating or precooling when electricity is cheaper or solar energy is available.
- Reducing consumption during a demand-response event.
- Coordinating operation with a battery, solar system or EV charger.
However, Matter does not replace the heat-pump manufacturer’s control system. A generic Matter thermostat may not expose proprietary variable-speed modulation, defrost logic, humidity management, outdoor-temperature lockouts, maintenance information or auxiliary-heat behaviour.
Heat-pump installation is also more complex than connecting a conventional heating-and-cooling thermostat. Wiring, emergency heat, system configuration and installer settings all matter. Google’s documentation illustrates some of these limitations: features such as Heat Pump Balance depend on the HVAC configuration, auxiliary heat, wiring and connectivity. Consult the manufacturer and installer before replacing a communicating thermostat. Relevant Google documentation includes Heat Pump Balance and Nest thermostat compatibility guidance.
What could Matter-enabled solar support do?
In a solar installation, the Matter endpoint may be the inverter, battery controller, smart meter, gateway or complete home-energy-management system. The panels themselves often have no network interface or independent control logic.
Potentially useful information includes:
- Current solar generation.
- Electricity imported from or exported to the grid.
- Battery state of charge and operating status.
- Energy availability for other household devices.
- Production or consumption forecasts, where supported.
- Coordination with HVAC systems, water heaters and EV chargers.
Reading energy data is not the same as controlling the installation. Changing inverter behaviour, curtailing generation, enabling islanded backup operation or altering export settings can be restricted by hardware, installer configuration, utility requirements and electrical-safety rules. Matter alone cannot authorise grid export or replace an approved inverter and energy-management system.
Google’s developer documentation includes solar-PV and battery-storage energy types at the data-model level, but that does not establish universal retail availability or identical consumer controls: Google’s energy-management type documentation.
What “Matter support” means in practice
There are several different claims hidden behind the phrase “supports Matter”:
Rank #3

With no subscriptions or hidden fees, you get deep historical insights to help you identify every energy-saving opportunity and save 10–20% on monthly bills.
- SMART ALERTS & CIRCUIT-LEVEL CONTROL: Set usage targets for each individual circuit and receive instant alerts when appliances exceed normal consumption. Refoss app supports automation and peak management to optimize schedules, reduce peaks, and improve efficiency. Real-time electricity usage monitor for circuit-level insights.
- Specification support: the Matter standard defines the relevant device type, cluster or capability.
- Product implementation: a manufacturer builds that functionality into its equipment or gateway.
- Certification: the relevant product passes the CSA’s Matter certification process.
- Controller support: a platform such as Google Home, Alexa, Apple Home or SmartThings recognises the device type.
- User-interface support: the platform offers useful readings and controls instead of merely listing the device.
- Advanced vendor features: the manufacturer’s own app may still be required for commissioning, analytics, firmware updates or specialist settings.
A device can therefore be part of the Matter specification while offering little practical functionality in a particular app. The CSA’s FAQ notes that a device-specific application may still be needed for features not defined by Matter: Matter FAQ.
Will an existing solar system or heat pump become compatible?
Usually not automatically. Matter support for an existing installation may arrive through:
- A firmware update from the manufacturer.
- A Matter-capable gateway or bridge.
- A new controller attached to the existing system.
- A replacement inverter, thermostat or HVAC control.
- A home-energy-management system that integrates several proprietary systems.
The manufacturer must confirm whether an update or gateway is planned and which functions will be exposed. A bridge may provide basic status while omitting advanced controls. It also introduces another device to power, maintain and update, and may create cloud or internet dependencies.
Do not confuse a product that works with a Matter-enabled hub through a proprietary integration with a native Matter-certified product. Check which specific component carries the certification.
How the major smart-home platforms fit in
Matter’s multi-admin model is designed to let one device participate in multiple ecosystems. That does not guarantee identical behaviour in every ecosystem.
A device may pair with several platforms but show different controls in each one. It might provide energy readings in one app, basic status in another, and voice control without a full energy dashboard. A vendor app may still be needed for installation or advanced settings.

Google’s public Matter support table is a useful example of the distinction: it documents the device types and controls available in Google Home while warning that not every Matter device type is fully supported there. Check the current platform documentation before buying rather than assuming that Alexa, Google Home, Apple Home and SmartThings offer feature parity. See Google Home’s Matter supported-device table.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsNetworking requirements: Wi-Fi, Thread, Ethernet and Bluetooth
Matter is an application-layer standard. It does not replace the underlying network.
- Wi-Fi: common for higher-bandwidth devices and products connected directly to the home network.
- Thread: a low-power mesh option for suitable devices. Thread products need a Thread border router.
- Ethernet: useful for fixed equipment such as gateways and energy controllers.
- Bluetooth Low Energy: commonly used during commissioning rather than normal device operation.
You also need a Matter controller to commission and manage devices. A home may require more than one controller or border router to cover multiple ecosystems. Matter 1.4.2 improved setup and networking foundations, including a route toward Wi-Fi onboarding without requiring Bluetooth Low Energy in every device, but successful deployment still depends on coordination between the manufacturer and platform.
More detail is available in the CSA’s Matter 1.4.2 announcement.
What to check before buying
For homeowners
- Is the exact model Matter-certified, or does it only work through a bridge or proprietary integration?
- Which Matter device type and version does it support?
- Does it use Wi-Fi, Thread or Ethernet?
- Will you need a Thread border router or separate gateway?
- Does it expose energy data, bidirectional controls or only basic status?
- Can it be used in multiple ecosystems at the same time?
- Which functions remain exclusive to the manufacturer’s app?
- What happens if the internet, cloud service, gateway or Matter controller fails?
- Is the model available in your country and compatible with local electrical and utility requirements?
- How long will software updates be provided?
For heat-pump installations
- Prefer native communicating-HVAC support where available over a simple relay thermostat.
- Confirm compatibility with auxiliary or emergency heat.
- Check support for variable-speed or inverter equipment.
- Verify outdoor-temperature, lockout and freeze-protection behaviour.
- Ask whether demand-response or utility-program integration is supported.
- Confirm that local heating and cooling remain available during network outages.
- Have the installer verify wiring, commissioning and warranty requirements.
For solar and battery systems
- Check the exact inverter, battery and gateway models.
- Verify whether the integration is read-only or permits approved control.
- Confirm import/export metering and time-of-use tariff support.
- Ask how backup reserve and outage operation are handled.
- Check coordination with EV charging and HVAC.
- Confirm installer permissions, cybersecurity provisions and local interconnection rules.
The CSA’s Matter-certified products directory is a useful verification point, but it is not a complete retail catalogue. Follow it with the manufacturer’s model-specific documentation.

Enphase energy-management equipment
Enphase offers solar, battery and home-energy-management equipment designed to coordinate energy systems, including heat pumps and EV chargers in supported configurations. This can be a relevant complete ecosystem for a new solar-and-storage installation, but it should not automatically be described as native Matter support for every component. Confirm the exact model and certification.
See Enphase’s official product information and home-energy-management overview. Its heat-pump configuration guide illustrates the importance of specific equipment and regional configurations. Pricing is installation- and configuration-dependent.
What changed after Matter 1.4?
Matter 1.4 is the release associated with the major solar, battery, heat-pump and water-heater expansion. It should not be presented as a new 2026 announcement.

- Matter 1.4: announced November 7, 2024; added the major energy device categories discussed here.
- Matter 1.5: announced November 20, 2025; headline additions included cameras, closures, soil sensors and further energy-management capabilities. See the CSA Matter 1.5 announcement.
- Matter 1.5.1: listed in the Matter Handbook as a March 2026 specification version, which should be distinguished from a major feature release. See the Matter Handbook specification list.
- Matter 1.6: announced June 17, 2026; focused on setup, multi-ecosystem experiences and context-aware control rather than introducing another major energy-device expansion. See the CSA Matter 1.6 announcement.
Why real-world availability takes time
A specification release is the beginning of a product cycle, not the end. Silicon and software support must become available; manufacturers must build and test products; the products must be certified; controller platforms must add support; and the resulting equipment must launch in particular countries and installer channels.
Solar and HVAC equipment makes that process especially slow. These systems have long hardware lifecycles, professional commissioning requirements, regional electrical rules and safety-critical operating modes. A platform may technically recognise a device while offering only a small subset of its controls.
Energy automation also has practical failure modes. Peak-avoidance settings can affect comfort. Battery optimisation can conflict with backup reserves. EV charging can compete with water heating or HVAC. Tariff-based routines can become inaccurate when utility rates change. A controller outage may leave equipment in its last operating state.
Matter should therefore be treated as an interoperability layer—not a replacement for certified HVAC controls, inverter safety systems, utility demand-response standards or professional installation.
