Short answer: choose the Aqara U50 for the lowest-cost Apple Home Key deadbolt, the U100 for a conventional replacement deadbolt with fingerprint access, or the U200 for retrofit installation, existing-key preservation, and native Matter over Thread.
These are not interchangeable locks. The U50 and U100 replace a standard U.S. single-cylinder deadbolt. The U200 mounts over compatible existing hardware, making it the strongest option for many renters and doors that should not be permanently modified.

- Buy the U50 if you have a compatible American deadbolt, want Apple Home Key, and do not need fingerprints.
- Buy the U100 if fingerprint entry is important and you want a traditional all-in-one replacement deadbolt.
- Buy the U200 if you want to preserve existing hardware, avoid drilling, support multiple smart-home platforms, or use Matter over Thread.
The U200 is the most capable architecturally, but it is not automatically the best lock for every door. Compatibility should come before feature count.

Apple Home, Home Key, Matter, and Thread explained
All three models are marketed with Apple Home and Apple Home Key support. Home Key allows a compatible iPhone or Apple Watch to act as a key, with Express Mode available where supported by the device, software, region, and pairing configuration.
Apple Home is the user-facing ecosystem: the Home app, Siri, automations, and Home Key. Matter is a cross-platform smart-home standard. Thread is a low-power networking technology that can carry Matter devices.
Matter over Thread does not mean a lock is completely hub-free. The U200 needs a suitable Matter controller and Thread border-router arrangement for Matter operation. Aqara’s U200 manual describes the Apple Matter controller and Thread border-router requirements for iOS setups.
The U50 and U100 use Bluetooth and Zigbee. The U50 can be set up and managed in Aqara Home without an Aqara hub, but Aqara says a compatible hub is needed for Matter and broader Aqara integration. The U100 requires an Aqara hub for remote features, Matter, automations, and wider third-party integration.
Aqara U50: best value replacement deadbolt
The U50 is the budget choice for a compatible U.S. door. It replaces a standard single-cylinder deadbolt and adds Apple Home Key, keypad access, physical keys, NFC cards, temporary passwords, and Bluetooth app control.
It does not have a fingerprint reader. That is the main reason to spend more on the U100 or choose the U200.

Installation and specifications
Aqara lists compatibility with:
- 2 3/8-inch or 2 3/4-inch backsets
- 35–55 mm door thickness
- 54 mm door-hole diameter
Most compatible installations should not require new drilling, but measure the door rather than assuming every U.S. deadbolt fits. The U50 uses four AA batteries, with Aqara claiming up to six months depending on usage. It includes USB-C emergency power, has an IPX5 rating, and uses Bluetooth 5.0, Zigbee 3.0, and NFC.
Best for: homeowners seeking inexpensive Apple Home Key access.
Trade-offs: no fingerprint entry, replacement-deadbolt installation, and greater Aqara-hub dependence for expanded features.
Aqara U100: best conventional deadbolt with fingerprints
The U100 is the traditional replacement-deadbolt option for households that want biometric entry. Its reader stores up to 50 fingerprints, while its keypad supports permanent, periodic, and one-time passwords.
It also supports Apple Home/Home Key, Aqara Home, NFC cards, a mechanical key, and integrations listed by Aqara for Google Home, Alexa, and the Aqara G4. Some of these features are managed through Aqara Home rather than directly through Apple Home.

The U100 uses a Bluetooth/Zigbee architecture. Aqara states that an Aqara 3.0 hub is required for remote functions, Matter, automations, and broader third-party integration. Its exterior panel is rated IP65, and Aqara describes the lock as BHMA Level 3-equivalent; treat that as the manufacturer’s stated claim rather than an independent certification conclusion.

Trade-offs: it costs more than the U50, needs an Aqara hub for important connected features, and is less suitable for renters or unusual door hardware.
Aqara U200: best retrofit and Matter-over-Thread option
The U200’s key advantage is its installation model. It mounts over compatible existing hardware, retains the exterior cylinder and physical key, and is designed to avoid permanent door modifications. Its separate exterior keypad provides fingerprints, PINs, NFC, Home Key, and other entry methods while the motorized unit remains inside.

Aqara lists compatibility with Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings, Aqara, and IFTTT. Its Quiet Unlock Mode can be useful where motor noise matters.
Compatibility matters more than the feature list
For U.S. doors, Aqara lists single-cylinder deadbolts with 2 3/8-inch or 2 3/4-inch backsets. It also supports certain Euro-profile and Scandi cylinders, but those installations require an emergency function: the outside key must still unlock the cylinder when a key is inserted on the inside.
The U200 is not a universal retrofit. The interior thumb-turn or cylinder must be operable by the motor, the deadbolt must move without excessive resistance, and the door must be aligned correctly with the strike plate.

The lock uses a rechargeable 7.4-volt lithium-ion battery. Aqara claims up to six months under a stated usage pattern. The keypad can use four AAA batteries or 12–24-volt wired power. The keypad is rated IPX5.
Best for: renters, retrofit installations, existing-key preservation, and multi-platform Matter/Thread homes.
Trade-offs: more complicated compatibility, a separate exterior keypad, and the need for suitable Matter and Thread infrastructure for full smart-home operation.

“Works with Apple Home” and “works without any hub” are not equivalent claims. Local Bluetooth operation, Aqara remote access, Apple Home remote access, and Matter control can use different communication paths.

Complete these checks before choosing a model:
- Identify the hardware: single-cylinder deadbolt, Euro-profile cylinder, Scandi cylinder, mortise lock, or another design.
- Measure the backset.
- For the U50 or U100, check door thickness and bore diameter against the current installation documentation.
- For the U200, verify the cylinder’s emergency function where required.
- Confirm that the inside thumb-turn or key can be rotated by the retrofit mechanism.
- Check that the deadbolt does not rub against the strike plate. Motorized locks can struggle with a stiff or misaligned door.
- Check the exterior keypad’s mounting surface and exposure to weather.
- If renting, obtain permission and confirm that the installation can be reversed without damage.
Families, guests, and fallback entry
The U100 and U200 are better choices for households that want fingerprints. The U50 remains practical for families using Home Key, PINs, NFC cards, temporary credentials, and physical keys.

Test the fallback method before relying on any smart lock. The U50 and U100 retain mechanical keys and USB-C emergency power. The U200 retains the existing physical key and has rechargeable-battery and keypad power options. Keep batteries charged, and verify that the physical key works while the door is open.
Auto-lock and door-status functions also deserve realistic expectations. A gyroscope can help detect lock movement, but it does not necessarily prove that the door is fully closed against the frame. Alignment and strike-plate geometry still matter.

The headline price is not always the final cost. Include:

- An Aqara hub, if required for the features you want.
- An Apple home hub or compatible Matter/Thread infrastructure if you do not already have it.
- A replacement cylinder for a U200 installation, if necessary.
- Batteries or charging accessories.
- Locksmith or installation labor for nonstandard doors.
The U50 is the cheapest entry point, but a required hub can narrow the price difference. The U100’s premium mainly buys built-in fingerprint access. The U200 may offer the strongest feature and connectivity combination, but only when its retrofit compatibility and network requirements are satisfied.
Final verdict
- U50: choose it for value and Apple Home Key on a compatible replacement deadbolt.
- U100: choose it for fingerprint access in a conventional full-deadbolt installation.
- U200: choose it for retrofit installation, existing-key preservation, renters, and Matter over Thread.
For a compatible U.S. door and a modern Matter/Thread setup, the U200 is the most flexible overall choice. For a straightforward, lower-cost deadbolt replacement, the U50 is the better buy. For families who specifically want fingerprints without a retrofit installation, choose the U100.
