To open most Samsung soundbar remotes, turn the remote over, press the marked or textured area, and slide the rear battery cover in the direction of its molded arrow. Replace the batteries according to the + and − symbols inside the compartment. The exact cover design, battery type, buttons, and shortcuts depend on the remote and soundbar model, so identify the model before using advanced commands.
In this guide, “open the remote” means opening the battery compartment—not prying apart the remote’s internal casing.

Find the soundbar model first
Locate the model number on a label on the rear or underside of the soundbar, its packaging, or the original paperwork. It may begin with a series such as HW-T, HW-Q, or HW-S. Check the rear or inside of the remote for a remote or part number as well.

How to open the battery compartment
- Turn the remote face down.
- Look for a sliding rear cover, recessed latch, small screw, or other release mechanism.
- For a sliding cover, press lightly on the textured or marked area and slide it in the direction shown by the molded arrow.
- For a latch-style cover, release the latch before lifting the cover.
- Remove the old batteries.
- Match the new batteries to the polarity symbols inside the compartment.
- Refit the cover until it closes securely.
- Test Power, Volume, and Source from close range.
Do not assume that every Samsung soundbar remote uses AA or AAA batteries. Use the size printed inside the compartment or specified in the model manual. If the cover does not move with light pressure, stop and check the arrows or manual. Forcing it sideways can break its clips.
Common Samsung soundbar remote buttons
The following controls appear on many Samsung soundbar remotes, but they are not universal. Samsung’s HW-T550 and HW-Q60T documentation illustrates how layouts and features vary between models.

Adjust sound modes, bass, treble, sync, and woofer level
Use SOUND MODE to cycle through the profiles your soundbar supports. Use Sound Control to select an available setting such as Bass, Treble, or Audio Sync, then adjust it with the directional buttons or volume control. Use WOOFER separately when you want to change the subwoofer level.

Do not treat a shortcut from one series as a universal instruction. For example, Samsung documents different sound-mode lists for the HW-T550 and HW-Q60T, while some Q-series remotes also include functions such as Dynamic Range Compression, Bluetooth Power, or volume restriction.
Model-specific shortcuts: check before holding buttons
Long-press commands can change settings or initiate accessory setup. On applicable models, Samsung documents examples including:
- Holding Up for about five seconds to initiate ID SET for an accessory.
- Holding Down for five seconds to toggle a volume restriction function.
- Holding SOUND MODE to access features such as DRC or Bluetooth Power.
- Holding WOOFER upward for about five seconds until ON – TV REMOTE appears, enabling compatible TV-remote control.
These commands are not guaranteed on every Samsung soundbar. Use the exact manual for your model before trying them. A remote reset, a Bluetooth-pairing reset, a power cycle, and a factory reset are different procedures.

- Press Source until the display shows BT.
- Press Bluetooth PAIR or Pair, depending on the remote. On some models, hold the control until BT PAIRING appears.
- Open Bluetooth settings on the phone, tablet, computer, or TV.
- Select the soundbar’s name and confirm if prompted.
- Play audio and adjust volume.
If the display says BT READY rather than BT PAIRING, the soundbar may not be discoverable. Samsung says some models require holding Source on the soundbar itself until pairing mode appears. See Samsung’s Bluetooth pairing troubleshooting for model-specific behavior.

A soundbar generally pairs with an audio source, not another soundbar, Bluetooth speaker, or pair of headphones. Compatibility, distance, interference, firmware, and stored pairings can affect discovery.
Connect and control the soundbar with a Samsung TV
HDMI ARC
- Connect the soundbar’s HDMI OUT port to the TV’s HDMI port labeled ARC or eARC.
- On the TV, open Settings → Sound → Sound Output.
- Select the Samsung soundbar.
- Enable Anynet+ or HDMI-CEC if required.
Samsung generally recommends HDMI as a strong digital connection, but the available audio formats and controls depend on the ARC/eARC capability of both devices. Compatible Anynet+ equipment can often power on and off together.
Optical
- Connect the TV’s optical output to the soundbar’s optical input.
- Set the soundbar to D.IN.
- Set the TV’s sound output to the optical device.
- Enable Auto Power Link if your model supports it.
On some remotes, holding the left direction enables or disables Auto Power Link. The button sequence and TV menu labels vary by model and software version.
For compatible optical or HDMI ARC setups, hold WOOFER upward for about five seconds if your manual specifies it. When ON – TV REMOTE appears, test volume and mute from the Samsung TV remote. TV control is usually intended for everyday power, volume, and mute functions; it may not expose woofer, treble, sound-mode, or pairing controls. See Samsung’s TV-remote soundbar guidance.

Use SmartThings as an alternative remote
SmartThings is available only for compatible network-capable soundbars; it is not a universal replacement for every infrared- or Bluetooth-only model.
- Install and open SmartThings.
- Tap +, then choose Device and AV.
- Select Samsung and the soundbar category.
- Choose the location and room.
- Follow the discovery and connection prompts.
- Open the soundbar in the app to use its available controls.
On supported models, SmartThings can also provide a firmware-update route. Wi-Fi setup can create network changes, and app labels may vary as the software changes. Samsung’s setup instructions are available in How to Set Up Your Samsung Soundbar.

- Replace the batteries. Confirm the size, polarity, and charge. Try a known-good set.
- Inspect the contacts. Look for corrosion, bent contacts, or battery leakage. Ensure the cover is fully closed.
- Check line of sight. Point the remote at the soundbar’s sensor from close range and remove obstructions. Avoid strong direct light aimed at the sensor.
- Test infrared transmission. Point the remote at a phone or digital camera and press Power. Some cameras show the infrared emitter as a flashing light, but camera filters make this test unreliable.
- Reset the conventional remote. Remove the batteries, hold Power for about eight seconds, reinstall the batteries, and test it. This is a general Samsung procedure, not a guaranteed reset for every soundbar remote.
- Test the soundbar itself. Use its physical buttons. If they work but the remote does not, investigate the remote, sensor path, batteries, or compatibility. If neither works, investigate power, cables, firmware, or service.
Samsung provides additional remote troubleshooting. A phone-camera test cannot prove that the soundbar sensor is healthy, but it can help distinguish a non-transmitting remote from a problem at the soundbar.
If Bluetooth pairing fails
- Confirm the display says BT PAIRING, not merely BT or BT READY.
- Put the source device into Bluetooth discovery mode.
- Move the devices close together.
- Remove obsolete soundbar entries or disconnect another device already using it.
- Restart the source device and soundbar.
- Unplug and reconnect the soundbar if appropriate.
- Check the exact model’s firmware instructions.
- Try another phone or audio device.
If no compatible device can pair after these steps, consult Samsung support or service.

Firmware updates
Update only with files and instructions for the exact soundbar model. Depending on the product, Samsung supports updates through SmartThings or by USB using files from the model-specific Download Center. Do not apply firmware intended for a similar-looking soundbar.
Samsung has documented a special issue involving some 2023 Q-Series models and identifies improved firmware version v1004.0 or later for the applicable models. That version is not a universal current firmware release for all Samsung soundbars. Check Samsung’s soundbar firmware guidance.
Lost remote, replacement remote, or universal remote?
Exact replacement
Choose an exact replacement matched to the soundbar model when you need Woofer, Sound Control, Bluetooth Pair, or other model-specific controls. Samsung recommends searching by the soundbar model through its support and parts channels; do not choose only by appearance. Start with Samsung Home Theater Accessories Support.
Universal remote
A universal remote may be adequate for Power, Volume, Mute, and Source if its manufacturer lists a compatible Samsung soundbar code. It may not support advanced soundbar functions.
Other options
Use the physical soundbar buttons for basic operation, or try SmartThings if the model supports it. If the soundbar itself does not respond to its buttons, the original remote, a TV remote, or the app, contact Samsung support or authorized service rather than repeatedly replacing remotes. Samsung’s self-repair guidance emphasizes model-specific documentation and warns that improper disassembly can cause damage.
The practical rule
Use the battery door and common buttons as a general starting point, but treat every long-press shortcut, battery specification, reset sequence, and advanced feature as model-specific. That approach prevents the most common mistakes: forcing the wrong cover, installing the wrong batteries, confusing Bluetooth audio pairing with remote pairing, and applying another soundbar’s instructions to your own.
