The first rule of using a Samsung smart oven is to identify its exact model. Samsung uses “smart oven” for several different appliances—ranges, wall ovens, microwave-combination ovens, and built-in models. Their controls, cooking modes, accessories, cleaning cycles, SmartThings features, and error codes are not interchangeable.
Find the model number before following instructions. Then use this guide for the universal principles and the model-specific Samsung manual for exact settings, rack positions, water quantities, safety limits, and service information.

Find the exact model and manual first
The product family name is not enough. A Samsung range may have a cooktop and oven in one appliance; a wall oven may include steam, Dual Cook, or microwave functions; and two visually similar models may use different trays, controls, or cleaning procedures.

The exact model determines:
- Which modes and accessories are available.
- Whether the appliance supports SmartThings monitoring, remote controls, a camera, or a temperature probe.
- Whether it has a water tray or reservoir.
- Which racks, dividers, and Air Fry trays are approved.
- How Self Clean, Steam Clean, Hybrid Clean, Descale, and Drain work.
- What an error code means and which repairs are authorized.
What “smart” means on a Samsung oven
Samsung’s connected features vary by model, market, appliance type, firmware, and safety state. Depending on the appliance, “smart” may include:
- SmartThings connectivity: status monitoring, cooking notifications, temperature or time information, selected controls, connected cooking tools, and maintenance prompts.
- Smart Oven Camera: a live view of food through the SmartThings app on selected models.
- Smart displays or AI Home: some newer appliances include a 7-inch display with recipes, recommendations, apps, and camera functions.
- Automatic programs: Auto Cook and other presets that guide time and temperature selection.
Samsung’s current range FAQ lists examples of connected features, but it does not make them universal. A camera shows appearance, not internal temperature. Steam, glare, condensation, a dirty lens, or food placement can obscure the image. Do not use the app or camera to determine whether meat, poultry, seafood, or reheated food is safe; use a reliable food thermometer.

- Remove film, cardboard, ties, packing material, and shipping inserts.
- Confirm installation against the exact installation guide. For applicable ranges, verify that the anti-tip bracket is installed and engaged.
- Confirm the required electrical, gas, or induction connection.
- Wash removable accessories as the manual directs.
- Set the clock, language, and other initial settings.
- Run the model’s specified first-use or burn-off procedure.
- Ventilate the kitchen. A temporary new-oven smell can occur during initial use.
Do not improvise a burn-off temperature or duration. Samsung’s built-in oven documentation treats initial settings, safety mechanisms, accessories, and installation as model-specific topics; the manual is the controlling source.
Connect SmartThings
- Install or update the Samsung SmartThings app.
- Sign in to or create a Samsung account.
- Turn on the oven’s Wi-Fi or Smart Control function if required.
- In SmartThings, select Add device and choose the oven, or scan the appliance when prompted.
- Follow the on-screen pairing instructions and connect to the intended home network.
- Give the appliance a clear name, such as “Kitchen Oven.”
- Test monitoring before relying on notifications or remote features.
SmartThings does not guarantee remote activation of every function. Opening the door may disable Smart Control on some models. Microwave-combination appliances may impose additional remote-start restrictions. The Samsung Dacor range manual and Dacor microwave manual illustrate why door status and appliance category matter.
If pairing fails, check the signal near the oven, confirm the correct Samsung account, update the app, power-cycle the router and appliance, and remove and re-add the oven. Check whether Smart Control has been disabled. A weak signal can prevent SmartThings from working properly, as noted in Samsung’s range connection guidance. Never bypass a safety control to preserve remote access.
Samsung oven modes explained
Bake
Use Bake for conventional baking when predictable heat and controlled browning matter most. Preheat before loading most cakes, breads, pastries, and other baked goods. Use the rack position recommended by the recipe or manual, avoid frequent door opening, and learn the oven’s hot spots during the first few uses.
Recommended Free Tools
Convection Bake and Convection+
Convection circulates heated air. Samsung describes Convection+ as moving hot air more consistently to support faster, more even cooking than conventional Bake. Food may brown sooner or dry more quickly, and the fan may continue running while the oven cools.
Do not apply a universal temperature conversion. A recipe’s cookware, quantity, pan color, rack position, oven calibration, and model design all affect the result. Use the recipe’s stated temperature as a starting point, monitor the first batch, and adjust based on results.
Convection Roast
Convection Roast suits meat and vegetables where circulating air supports browning. Leave space around the food, use an approved roasting rack or pan, and use the supplied probe where appropriate. Cooking time alone is not a dependable way to establish meat doneness.
Air Fry
Air Fry is available only on selected Samsung models and may require a specific perforated tray. Samsung’s NSE6DG8700SRAA product page is one example of a model listing Air Fry and a compatible accessory.

- Preheat when the manual or recipe calls for it.
- Arrange food in a single layer where possible, with space between pieces.
- Use only the approved tray and rack position.
- Expect grease and crumbs to fall below the perforated tray; use a drip pan if the manual specifies one.
- Turn or shake food when directed.
- Check whether the tray is dishwasher-safe or permitted during Self Clean before using either process.
An oven Air Fry mode is not identical to a countertop basket fryer. Overloading, wet food, thick cuts, or blocked airflow commonly produce soft results.
Air Sous Vide
Selected Samsung ovens use controlled hot air to cook vacuum-sealed food without a separate water bath. This is not automatically equivalent to traditional immersion sous vide. Use food-safe, heat-rated bags, follow the model’s temperature and time limits, and apply recognized food-safety practices. Keep food refrigerated as appropriate and use a thermometer where internal temperature matters. A sealed bag does not make unsafe handling safe.
Steam and steam-assisted cooking
Applicable Samsung wall and built-in ovens may use a water tray or reservoir to add moisture during baking, roasting, or broiling. Samsung says Steam Cook can help retain moisture while allowing exterior browning on supported wall ovens.
A tray and a reservoir are not the same thing. Fill only the specified component with the specified water quantity, drain or empty it when required, and follow the manual’s descaling schedule. Steam and hot water can cause severe burns. Samsung’s built-in oven manual separates steam modes, reservoir use, Descale, Drain, Air Fry, Air Sous Vide, and troubleshooting.

Broil
Broil uses intense upper heat. Rack position and door position depend on the model. Watch food continuously, use a broiler-safe pan, keep grease away from ignition sources, and never walk away while broiling.
Dual Cook or Flex Duo
On models with a divider, insert it fully and confirm that the oven recognizes it. Only certain mode combinations may be available, and airflow and rack positions change when the cavity is divided. Follow the manual before inserting or removing the divider and verify whether the two sections have independent temperatures and timers.
Special modes
- Dehydrate: dries food at low temperature; safe storage still matters.
- Proof: provides gentle warmth for dough; excessive heat can damage yeast.
- Keep Warm: holds cooked food and is not intended to cook raw food.
- Sabbath: availability and operation vary by model and jurisdiction.
- Auto Cook: presets are convenient, but food size, shape, starting temperature, and cookware affect results.
A repeatable cooking workflow
| Task | Recommended mode | Main control | Accessory | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cakes and delicate baking | Bake | Temperature and timer | Standard pan | Opening the door early |
| Multiple trays of cookies | Convection | Temperature and rack spacing | Light-colored trays | Crowding airflow |
| Wings or fries | Air Fry | Temperature and time | Approved Air Fry tray | Overloading the tray |
| Roast meat | Convection Roast | Probe or internal temperature | Roasting pan and rack | Using time alone |
| Bread or tender roast | Steam-assisted | Water and temperature settings | Approved tray or reservoir | Running the reservoir dry |
| Crispy top finish | Broil | Rack position and close monitoring | Broiler-safe pan | Walking away |
- Confirm the mode and whether preheating is required.
- Choose the rack position.
- Match the cookware or accessory to the manual.
- Set temperature and time.
- Use a probe or food thermometer where internal temperature determines doneness.
- Keep fans, vents, and heating elements clear.
- Monitor browning and rotate only when appropriate.
- Confirm doneness independently of the app or camera.
- Turn off the oven and allow the cooling fan to finish.
- Clean spills only after the cavity is safe to touch.
Use SmartThings safely
SmartThings is most useful for alerts, status checks, temperature monitoring on supported models, and connected cooking features. It is less useful if your kitchen has unreliable Wi-Fi, you do not want an account, or you expect the app to replace supervision.
Remote access may be limited by door state, Smart Control settings, appliance category, regional availability, firmware, or the particular function selected. Camera viewing can also be reduced by steam, condensation, glare, and residue. Treat connected control as a convenience—not as a safety device.
Before buying a connected model, consider account requirements, camera privacy, network reliability, installation, replacement accessories, descaling supplies, and local service availability. Samsung’s current Bespoke kitchen lineup includes connected ranges, wall ovens, microwave-combination ovens, and double wall ovens, but those products are not interchangeable installation projects.
Cleaning and maintenance
Everyday cleaning
Clean only when the appliance is off and cool. Use a soft cloth and an approved cleaner. Wipe stainless steel with the grain, keep moisture away from the gasket and gaps between glass panels, and avoid steel wool, abrasive powders, harsh chemicals, and unsuitable cooktop scrapers.
Self Clean
Samsung’s oven-cleaning guidance says to remove racks, utensils, cookware, probes, foil, and other accessories before Self Clean unless the exact manual says otherwise. Wipe away excessive spills first. The door locks during the cycle and remains locked until the oven cools sufficiently.
Rank #3
- Ventilate the room and keep children away.
- Birds can be especially sensitive to fumes; move them to a well-ventilated area away from the appliance.
- Never force the locked door.
- Do not use commercial oven cleaner in a Self-Clean oven.
- Do not line the cavity, racks, or oven bottom with aluminum foil.
- Rack treatment depends on the rack material and model; nickel racks may need removal.
- If Self Clean malfunctions, stop using the oven and arrange qualified service.
Samsung warns that oven-cleaner residue can damage the interior during Self Clean and that foil can melt, adhere to surfaces, impair heat distribution, and cause permanent damage.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsSteam Clean and Hybrid Clean
Steam Clean loosens residue; it is not steam cooking. For applicable models, Samsung’s general procedure is to empty the oven, remove racks and accessories, add one cup of tap water to the steam-clean tray—or onto the cavity floor if there is no tray—close the door, select Steam Clean, and press Start. After cooling, wipe away loosened residue and remaining hot water.
Reservoir-equipped models may use Hybrid Clean and require 21⁄4 cups of water in the reservoir instead. Controls and quantities vary, so never transfer this amount to another model.
Descale and Drain
Descale removes mineral deposits from the steam system. Drain removes water from the steam system and reservoir. Follow the manual for the approved descaling agent, dilution, rinse procedure, and timing. Do not substitute vinegar, citric acid, or another cleaner unless Samsung specifically approves it for that model.
Racks, partitions, and door glass
Soak racks in lukewarm, soapy water and use a non-abrasive pad. If they slide poorly, Samsung’s cleaning guidance permits applying a small amount of cooking oil to the side-rail guides with wax paper or a cloth.
Clean the outside of the door glass first. Disassembling the door to reach debris between panes can cause damage and may affect warranty coverage. If the manual does not explicitly authorize the procedure, use professional service.

The oven will not turn on
- Check the circuit breaker or fuse and the gas or electrical supply.
- Check Control Lock, Sabbath mode, and energy-saving display settings.
- Confirm that initial setup or clock configuration is complete.
- Check that the door is closed and whether the appliance recently overheated.
Do not open panels or bypass electrical protections.
The oven does not heat
Confirm the selected mode, temperature, preheating status, door closure, Delay Start, divider installation, and any displayed error. Check the gas or electrical supply. If the cavity remains cold, contact Samsung service rather than replacing internal components yourself.
Food cooks unevenly
Check rack position, pan material and color, preheating, airflow, overcrowding, door opening, convection settings, and divider or accessory installation. Normal temperature cycling can change the heater’s appearance and timing; it is not automatically a heating failure.
Air Fry food is soggy
Reduce the load, separate pieces, dry excess surface moisture, preheat when directed, use the correct tray and rack, turn or shake food, and adjust for thick cuts. An oven’s Air Fry results will not necessarily match a countertop fryer.
Steam does not work
Check that the reservoir is filled and seated correctly, the door is closed, Steam Cook—not Steam Clean—is selected, and the system does not require Drain or Descale. Confirm that the model supports steam cooking rather than only a steam-cleaning cycle.

SmartThings will not connect
Check the Wi-Fi signal, Samsung account, app permissions and updates, appliance Wi-Fi or Smart Control setting, account registration, door state, and regional model support. Do not assume a universal Wi-Fi-band requirement; consult the exact manual.
Error codes
Do not rely on a generic error-code chart. Photograph the code, record what mode was running, turn the appliance off safely, and consult the exact manual or Samsung support page. If the code returns, arrange service. Samsung’s support systems organize problems by symptoms such as power, heating, error display, door, cleaning, SmartThings, and accessories—often more usefully than a universal list.
Safety checklist
- Never leave Broil, Air Fry, or high-heat cooking unattended.
- Keep vents unobstructed and flammable materials away from the appliance.
- Do not use foil to line the cavity or oven bottom.
- Use only approved cookware and accessories.
- Treat steam, hot water, racks, doors, Self-Clean fumes, and exhaust as burn hazards.
- Never force a locked door.
- Do not operate a damaged door, gasket, glass panel, cord, gas connection, or heating element.
- Do not disassemble the door or appliance unless the exact instructions authorize it.
- Use a food thermometer when internal temperature determines safety.

- If you smell gas or burning electrical insulation, see smoke, or observe sparking, stop using the appliance and follow local emergency and service guidance.
Is a Samsung smart oven right for you?
Connected features are valuable for owners who want alerts, status checks, a camera view, probe monitoring, or centralized SmartThings control. They may not justify the added complexity for someone who wants mechanical simplicity, has unreliable Wi-Fi, dislikes accounts, or rarely needs remote monitoring.
A range combines cooktop and oven in one installation. A wall oven offers ergonomic placement and can pair with a separate cooktop, but cabinet work and installation are more specialized. A microwave-combination wall oven adds microwave functionality but has more complex controls and mode limitations. A steam or Dual Cook oven can be useful for frequent baking, roasting, or two-temperature cooking, but requires careful management of accessories, water, draining, and descaling.
Also budget for installation, electrical or gas work, replacement racks and trays, steam maintenance supplies, and service availability. Samsung Care+ terms vary by model and coverage period; compare exclusions, deductibles, parts, labor, and service method rather than assuming extended coverage is automatically worthwhile. For a basic cooking need, a conventional range, countertop air fryer, standalone immersion circulator, or non-connected wall oven may be a better fit.
For current model comparisons, use Samsung’s official connected-appliance listings, then verify availability, specifications, installation requirements, warranty, and accessories for your location.

Can I control my Samsung oven from my phone?
Sometimes. SmartThings may provide monitoring, alerts, and selected controls, but remote activation is model-specific and can be restricted by door status, Smart Control settings, appliance category, firmware, and regional availability.
Can I leave the Air Fry tray in during Self Clean?
Do not assume so. Remove it unless the exact model manual specifically approves leaving it inside.
Why does the Samsung oven door stay locked?
It may be cooling after Self Clean or responding to a safety condition. Never force it; wait for the lock to release and consult the exact manual if it remains locked.
Why is the camera image unclear?
Steam, condensation, glare, residue, or food placement can obstruct the view. The camera is for visual monitoring and cannot measure internal food temperature.
