Yes—densified wood can outperform some steel comparisons on selected strength metrics and can offer a compelling strength-to-weight ratio. No—SUPERWOOD is not a universal, drop-in replacement for steel beams, columns, connections, or every building assembly.

InventWood, a Maryland startup spun out of University of Maryland research, has moved its wood-strengthening technology from laboratory work toward commercial production. The company’s first factory is in Frederick, Maryland, and an engineering review reported that the plant began shipping initial commercial batches in October 2025. As of August 12, 2026, InventWood says production is underway but current capacity is fully allocated, with new orders expected to open as output expands.

What SUPERWOOD actually is

SUPERWOOD starts with genuine wood rather than a synthetic structural composite. InventWood describes a two-stage process: chemically modifying lignin and selectively removing hemicellulose, then compressing the prepared wood under controlled heat. That treatment collapses much of wood’s porous structure and creates a more tightly bonded cellulose-fiber network.

InventWood says the core transformation uses no synthetic resins. That statement should not be read to mean that every finished product, coating, adhesive, or building assembly containing SUPERWOOD is resin-free. The relevant point is that the company is densifying and chemically modifying a natural wood structure rather than simply making a conventional fiberboard or plastic composite.

The commercial concept grew from research begun in 2013 in Liangbing Hu’s laboratory at the University of Maryland. UMD identifies InventWood as a spinoff commercializing wood-based technologies developed by Hu and his colleagues.

The 2018 research behind the headline

The scientific foundation is a 2018 Nature paper, Processing bulk natural wood into a high-performance structural material. In that work, researchers partially removed lignin and hemicellulose from wood and then compressed it under heat.

The resulting material was approximately three times as dense as the starting wood, with an approximately 80% reduction in thickness. The study reported major gains in strength, toughness, and ballistic resistance while retaining a wood-based structure.

The paper reported these tensile-strength examples for laboratory-prepared densified wood:

Wood species Reported tensile strength
Oak 584.3 ± 29.8 MPa
Poplar 431.5 ± 15.1 MPa
Cedar 550.1 ± 47.4 MPa
Pine 536.9 ± 24.7 MPa

Those results explain why a “stronger than steel” headline is not pure fantasy. Several hundred megapascals of tensile strength is an unusually high result for a wood-derived material. But these were controlled laboratory specimens tested in particular directions and geometries. They were not automatically equivalent to a commercial façade panel, floorboard, beam, bracket, or bolted connection.

What “stronger than steel” means—and what it does not

The most important qualification is the property being compared. InventWood’s current marketing describes SUPERWOOD as having a strength-to-weight ratio of up to 10 times that of steel. Other company material describes it as up to six times lighter than steel. Those are not the same claim as saying every SUPERWOOD product has ten times the absolute strength of every steel product.

A serious comparison needs to identify at least five variables:

  • Property: tensile strength, compressive strength, bending strength, stiffness, toughness, hardness, or strength-to-weight ratio.
  • Direction: wood is anisotropic, so performance parallel to the grain can differ substantially from performance across the grain.
  • Product geometry: a thin laboratory specimen, a wide panel, a laminated component, and a beam do not behave the same way.
  • Condition: moisture content, temperature, defects, surface treatment, aging, and fire exposure can affect the result.
  • Steel grade and assembly: steel is available in standardized grades, shapes, fasteners, welds, and code-recognized connection systems. “Steel” is not one material with one strength.

Strength is also not stiffness. A material may carry a high tensile load but still deflect too much for a particular floor, façade, stair, or bridge application. Hardness is not the same as fracture toughness, and a strong raw material does not automatically produce a strong joint.

The accurate version of the headline: University of Maryland research demonstrated densified wood with tensile strengths in the several-hundred-megapascal range, while InventWood reports a strength-to-weight ratio of up to 10 times that of steel for SUPERWOOD. Neither statement proves that a standard SUPERWOOD board can replace a steel beam in a building.

From university laboratory to Frederick factory

InventWood built its first commercial manufacturing facility in Frederick, Maryland. A University of Maryland Mtech profile described the plant as approximately 90,000 square feet, with an expected capacity of about one million square feet of SUPERWOOD per year. That is an announced or expected capacity figure, not a public independent audit of realized production.

The scale-up work has addressed some of the major obstacles in densified-wood manufacturing. A Department of Energy-supported development record reports that processing time was reduced from weeks to a few hours, chemical dosage was reduced by more than 85%, and pressing time fell from days to a few hours. Those changes are important because a process that works only with long laboratory cycles would be difficult to commercialize. They do not, by themselves, establish final product cost, plant utilization, yield, or profitability.

The company’s early launch communications anticipated interior products first, followed by exterior products. An engineering review published in 2026 reported that the Frederick operation began shipping its first commercial batches in October 2025. The sources reviewed do not establish the shipment volume, full customer list, realized price, or the results of an independent production audit.

InventWood’s current contact information says initial production is underway and capacity is fully allocated because of demand. It expects new orders to begin shipping as production expands. A refundable $200 deposit can be used to reserve a position in the queue. That is evidence of demand collection and production prioritization—not evidence that a consumer can walk into a conventional lumberyard and buy standard stock today.

For an architect, builder, developer, or homeowner with a defined project, the practical route is to reserve a place in InventWood’s SUPERWOOD production queue or contact the company for product availability, dimensions, samples, and specification support. The queue should be treated as a commercial inquiry, not as a guaranteed delivery date.

Where SUPERWOOD is most likely to be used first

InventWood’s current applications point toward architectural surfaces and building-envelope products rather than immediate replacement of all structural steel. That is a sensible market entry: these applications can benefit from durability, appearance, low weight, and design flexibility without requiring the material to replace every part of a structural frame.

Interior applications

The company lists SUPERWOOD for:

  • walls and ceilings;
  • shelving and cabinetry;
  • kitchen cabinets;
  • interior doors and trim;
  • window mullions;
  • furniture and fixtures;
  • stairs; and
  • other architectural millwork.

InventWood says the material can be cut, fastened, and finished in ways similar to hardwoods. It also emphasizes resistance to impacts, scratches, and dents. Those characteristics may be valuable in hospitality, retail, multifamily, institutional, and high-traffic interiors, but the exact finish system and substrate should still be specified for the intended use.

Exterior products: SUPERWOOD XP

SUPERWOOD XP is the company’s exterior-oriented product. Listed applications include residential siding, exterior cladding, fencing, railing, decking, outdoor living structures, shade structures, privacy walls, exterior doors, and outdoor furniture.

InventWood lists several performance claims for SUPERWOOD XP, including:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Class A fire performance under ASTM E84;
  • resistance to termites and fungus; and
  • hardness up to three times that of oak.

These should be treated as company-reported claims tied to the product and test conditions. ASTM E84 Class A is a surface-burning classification; it is not the same thing as a fire-resistance rating for a wall, floor, roof, or structural assembly, and it does not make a wood product noncombustible. Before specifying the product, obtain the current test report and determine whether it applies to the exact thickness, finish, orientation, and assembly being proposed.

The company says exterior products need periodic cleaning or refinishing but no special treatments, sealants, or preservatives. That may simplify maintenance compared with some treated-wood systems, but the project team should confirm expected recoating intervals, color retention, weathering, edge treatment, drainage, and warranty conditions for the particular product.

Why façade and cladding work is a logical first market

Cladding and architectural panels are not trivial applications, but they are more realistic early markets than a broad claim of replacing structural steel. A façade designer can use a lightweight, durable wood-based finish while designing the support rails, clips, subframing, and primary structure separately.

The commercial route has also pointed in this direction. In 2024, InventWood announced an agreement with Intectural, a distributor of premium architectural products, to support the early U.S. introduction of SuperWood Facade. That announcement said the arrangement would secure a significant portion of first-year output from the pilot production facility. The current status, availability, and commercial terms of that relationship were not independently confirmed in the research reviewed here.

For a commercial project, the right question is not simply “Is this stronger than steel?” It is “Can this exact cladding system meet the project’s wind, impact, fire, moisture, attachment, movement, appearance, and maintenance requirements at the required lead time?”

The limitations a construction team must resolve

1. Material strength is not assembly approval

A building does not consist of isolated tensile-test coupons. It consists of members, fasteners, joints, openings, interfaces, tolerances, and load paths. A material can have impressive laboratory strength while its commercial connection details remain the limiting factor.

InventWood’s current materials say the company is working with engineers, testing laboratories, and early adopters to validate structural projects. That wording is significant: structural applications are being developed and validated, not presented as universally approved substitutions for steel or engineered lumber.

2. Wood remains directional

Steel is comparatively isotropic: its properties are much more consistent in different directions. Wood follows grain, contains natural variation, and can have defects or local changes in density. Densification may improve performance, but it does not erase the need to account for grain direction, cross-grain loading, splitting, buckling, shear, bearing, and connection behavior.

3. Moisture and dimensional movement matter

Exterior wood products face wetting and drying cycles, temperature changes, ultraviolet exposure, freeze-thaw conditions, and water intrusion at joints. A project team needs verified data for swelling, shrinkage, moisture cycling, edge sealing, coating adhesion, and long-term weathering. A stronger wood product is still not automatically a maintenance-free product.

4. Fire claims must be read precisely

The company’s ASTM E84 Class A claim may be relevant to surface flame-spread and smoke-development requirements, depending on the jurisdiction and assembly. It does not answer every question about fire resistance, concealed spaces, combustible façades, cavity barriers, ignition, or structural fire performance. Those questions belong to the complete wall or roof assembly and the applicable building code.

5. Cost and availability are still open questions

There is no established public price list in the research reviewed, and the current queue indicates constrained supply. A project budget should include material cost, freight, fabrication, finish, fasteners, waste, replacement stock, and the cost of engineering or special testing. A lightweight material may reduce handling or support requirements, but those savings should be calculated rather than assumed.

6. Commercial consistency must match laboratory performance

The 2018 study and the commercial process are related but not identical. Laboratory samples may have different dimensions, treatment levels, pressing cycles, moisture conditions, and quality controls than factory-made boards or profiles. A specifier should request product-specific mechanical data, tolerances, conditioning procedures, and quality-assurance information.

How to evaluate SUPERWOOD for a real project

  1. Define the application. Separate interior millwork, siding, rainscreen cladding, decking, furniture, structural framing, and temporary construction uses. Each has different performance requirements.
  2. Request the exact product data. Ask for the current technical data sheet, available sizes, density range, mechanical properties, moisture conditions, finish options, tolerances, and recommended fabrication methods.
  3. Match the test to the design load. Do not use a tensile number to approve bending, compression, shear, impact, fastener withdrawal, or façade wind loading. Confirm test direction, specimen size, conditioning, and safety factors.
  4. Evaluate the complete assembly. For cladding, review the panel, clips, rails, joints, penetrations, drainage plane, cavity, insulation, fire barriers, and substrate—not just the SUPERWOOD face material.
  5. Have the engineer of record review structural uses. A material claim cannot replace load-path calculations, connection design, code analysis, and approval by the authority having jurisdiction.
  6. Plan for moisture and maintenance. Establish installation clearances, drainage, end-grain protection, cleaning, refinishing, inspection, and replacement procedures.
  7. Confirm supply before designing around it. Get a written lead-time estimate, allocation status, minimum order quantity, finish availability, and a contingency material. Current capacity is reported as fully allocated.
  8. Verify environmental documentation. Request a product-specific environmental product declaration or life-cycle assessment if carbon performance is material to the project’s certification or reporting requirements.

Funding, patents, and the commercial bet

InventWood’s development has received both public and private backing. The company says it received a $20 million U.S. Department of Energy SCALEUP award. A University of Maryland company profile reported more than $30 million in non-dilutive federal, state, and local grants and $50 million in total funding at the time of that profile.

In May 2025, trade coverage reported a $15 million first close of a Series A led by the Grantham Foundation, with participation from Builders Vision, Baruch Future Ventures, MUUS Climate Partners, and building-industry investors. A financing announcement demonstrates investor support, but it does not prove that the product has reached cost parity with steel, conventional wood, fiber cement, aluminum, or other cladding materials.

InventWood’s current company materials report 144 filed patents and 41 granted or allowed patents. An earlier UMD profile reported 11 awarded patents and more than 100 pending. The changing figures are not necessarily contradictory: patent applications continue to be filed and prosecuted, and the status count changes over time. The current figure should be attributed to the company and dated rather than presented as an independently audited measure of commercial defensibility.

Could SUPERWOOD be substantially lower-carbon?

The environmental case is part of the product’s appeal. Wood can be renewable and can store biogenic carbon, while steel and concrete have energy- and emissions-intensive production chains. InventWood claims that SUPERWOOD has 90% lower carbon emissions than steel production and says it uses sustainably sourced, fast-growing, or underutilized wood species.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That claim needs a product-specific comparison before it is used in a project carbon calculation. Important variables include the wood source, forest-management assumptions, chemical inputs, electricity and heat, factory yield, transportation, coatings, maintenance, service life, end-of-life treatment, and the steel grade and system being compared. The boundary also matters: comparing manufacturing only can produce a different result from comparing a complete building assembly over its service life.

The most defensible conclusion today is that SUPERWOOD has the potential to combine a renewable wood feedstock and familiar architectural appearance with unusually high mechanical performance. Whether that potential becomes a verified carbon advantage depends on the actual commercial product and a transparent life-cycle assessment.

What would prove that SUPERWOOD is ready for broader structural use?

Construction professionals should look for a growing body of evidence beyond the original research paper and headline specifications:

  • independent testing of the exact commercial products and dimensions;
  • published values for strength, stiffness, creep, fatigue, shear, compression, and fastener behavior in relevant directions;
  • moisture-cycling, weathering, freeze-thaw, ultraviolet, and coating-adhesion data for exterior products;
  • fire testing for the complete proposed assemblies, not only a surface classification;
  • documented manufacturing tolerances and quality-control procedures;
  • recognized evaluation reports, code pathways, or jurisdiction-specific approvals where required;
  • tested connection details and installation instructions; and
  • repeatable delivery, pricing, warranty, and replacement-stock commitments.

Those items are less exciting than “stronger than steel,” but they determine whether a material can move from an impressive demonstration to routine specification.

Where the technology stands now

InventWood has cleared several meaningful commercialization hurdles: the process originated in peer-reviewed university research, the company has raised substantial support, a first factory exists in Frederick, production has reportedly begun shipping commercial batches, and the company has identified specific interior and exterior product categories.

It has not yet established, on the evidence reviewed here, that SUPERWOOD is a universal structural substitute for steel. The immediate opportunity is more focused: architectural cladding, siding, decking, fencing, interiors, millwork, furniture, and other applications where a wood appearance, low weight, dent resistance, and potentially lower embodied carbon are valuable.

The central commercial test is now scale and repeatability. InventWood must show that the material can be produced in consistent dimensions and properties, delivered at a useful volume and price, finished for real-world exposure, and supported by the engineering and code documentation required by construction projects. If it can do that, SUPERWOOD could become an important new category of engineered wood. Until then, “stronger than steel” is best understood as a qualified material-science comparison—not a blanket design instruction.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is SUPERWOOD literally stronger than all steel?

No. InventWood’s claim is primarily a strength-to-weight comparison, reported as up to 10 times that of steel. The underlying 2018 research measured tensile strengths of approximately 431 to 584 MPa in specific densified-wood specimens. That does not establish that every SUPERWOOD product is stronger than every steel grade in tension, bending, compression, stiffness, fire performance, or a complete building assembly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can SUPERWOOD replace a steel beam or column?

Not without project-specific engineering, product data, connection design, and code approval. InventWood says structural projects are still being validated. A laboratory tensile result cannot be used by itself to approve a beam, column, floor, façade support, or bolted connection.

Is SUPERWOOD available to buy now?

As of August 12, 2026, InventWood says production is underway but current capacity is fully allocated. The company expects new orders to begin shipping as capacity expands and offers a refundable $200 deposit to reserve a queue position. Availability, sizes, finishes, lead times, and pricing should be confirmed directly for each project.

What is SUPERWOOD XP used for?

SUPERWOOD XP is InventWood’s exterior-oriented product, listed for siding, cladding, fencing, railing, decking, outdoor living structures, shade structures, privacy walls, exterior doors, and outdoor furniture. The company reports Class A ASTM E84 fire performance, termite and fungus resistance, and increased hardness; project teams should obtain current product-specific reports before relying on those claims.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: SUPERWOOD is a credible and increasingly commercial example of densified wood—not a magic material that makes steel obsolete. The research supports unusually high strength in carefully tested specimens, and InventWood has advanced to commercial shipments from its Frederick, Maryland, factory. For construction today, the most realistic uses are architectural interiors, siding, façades, decking, fencing, and related wood-finish applications. Treat any structural substitution, fire strategy, carbon calculation, or long-term exterior specification as an engineering and documentation exercise, not as a consequence of the phrase “stronger than steel.”
