What Marks Lumber announced
In an announcement reproduced by HBSDealer, the company said: âAfter much consideration and with great difficulty, we have made the decision to retire and close Marks Lumber in 2027.â The announcement does not give a specific final closing date.
The schedule distinguishes the end of custom production from the later end of sales:

The Missoulian report, republished by Tree Frog, says owner Steve Marks planned to keep staff through November before laying off all but four employees. That staffing detail comes from the news report, not the companyâs published announcement.

What the Clancy mill made
Marks Lumber described itself as a mid-sized specialty sawmill and one of the few Montana mills manufacturing authentic circle-sawn lumber, timbers, flooring, and siding. Its website lists Douglas fir circle-sawn flooring and siding, tongue-and-groove, trim and fascia, landscape and firewood products, fencing and agriculture products, wood finishes and treatments, and timber framing. The Missoulian report, republished by Tree Frog, says the mill estimated it had been cutting specialty timbers, rough-sawn boards, circle-sawn flooring, and custom frames for more than 75 years. It also describes Douglas fir used in homes and buildings, including the historic Guardian of the Gulch fire tower. The companyâs long-running specialty work is distinct from commodity lumber: builders and owners may seek particular surface texture, dimensions, species, or custom framing rather than a standard off-the-shelf board.

Can customers still buy lumber?
The announcement says existing inventory will remain available after sawing stops, with sales continuing into 2027. It does not state how much stock remains or confirm current availability of any particular species, profile, or dimension. Buyers should contact the mill directly before making plans that depend on a specific item, quantity, or pickup date; listed products may not all be available during the closeout.

Why is Marks Lumber closing?
The announcement does not state a reason, and the reviewed closure reporting does not establish one. A 2025 KTVH report described difficult conditions in Montanaâs wood-products industry and mentioned the closures of Roseburg Forest Products in Missoula and Pyramid Mountain Lumber in Seeley Lake. At that time, Marks Lumber was still operating; that broader context does not show why it chose to close in 2027.
In that 2025 KTVH report, Steve Marks said: âYou know, the mills in Montana, the remaining large mills â things aren’t real good right now in the wood products industry, it’s tough.â The comment documents his view of the industry at the time, but it is not an explanation of the later closure decision. The sources reviewed also do not identify a buyer or successor supplier.
