What does a living shoreline include?

A living shoreline uses natural materials, native vegetation, and nature-based features to stabilize and protect land beside the water, rather than relying only on a conventional vertical seawall. Its elements vary with local conditions and may include native plants, oyster habitat, rock, sand, gentle slopes, and multiple habitat zones; some projects combine natural and structural features.

The county says design depends on factors such as water depth, wave energy, existing habitat, shoreline conditions, and surrounding land use. Potential benefits include slowing water and holding sediment to reduce erosion, creating habitat for fish, oysters, crabs, birds, and other wildlife, supporting native vegetation, capturing sediment and nutrients, and absorbing some wave energy. Those benefits depend on the site and design.

How long will the Bishop Point project take?

The county’s published estimate is approximately 60–90 working days. The schedule may change because of weather, tides, material delivery, site conditions, permitting, or other circumstances.

In a Spectrum News report published October 24, 2026, construction was underway and had begun a couple of weeks earlier. Sherri Swanson of the county Natural Resources Department said she hoped it might be finished in just over a month, while noting that weather, materials, and permitting could affect the timing. That was a reported hope, not a firm completion or reopening date; the county’s 60–90 working-day estimate is the formal published schedule.

Are living shorelines as effective as seawalls?

There is no one-size-fits-all answer. A living shoreline may be suitable for a lower-energy site where habitat and natural shoreline functions matter, while a conventional seawall is a structural approach; the right choice depends on exposure, design, materials, and the waterfront’s intended use. The county says site evaluation is necessary and that living shorelines are not appropriate everywhere.

Living shorelines can absorb some wave energy and may reduce storm impacts, but they do not eliminate flooding. Performance in major storms depends on site exposure, the design, and the materials used. The county also notes that natural and structural elements can be combined rather than treated as mutually exclusive options.

For a project evaluation, compare:

  • Site suitability: wave energy, water depth, shoreline conditions, habitat, and nearby land use.
  • Protection goals: erosion control and wave attenuation needs.
  • Environmental functions: habitat, native vegetation, and potential sediment and nutrient capture.
  • Costs over time: construction and maintenance costs under local conditions.
  • Storm exposure: the design’s limits under the site’s likely conditions.
  • Waterfront use: access and recreation goals, as well as the desired shoreline form.

How much does a living shoreline cost compared with a seawall?

Manatee County’s webpage reports comparative cost figures, but they are not Bishop Point’s budget or guaranteed savings for another project. The county attributes the figures to external analyses and describes one as based on a study sample of Florida waterfront properties.
