If “work” means a model you can assemble and display, the National Park Service (NPS) offers a printable paper cannon with a carriage, barrel and support. If you mean a cannon that launches a projectile, this guide does not provide plans or firing instructions. Instead, it explains the paper build and a separate, adult-supervised NPS demonstration of gas pressure that does not turn the model into a launcher.
What counts as a working tiny cannon?
A paper cannon can work as a model: its parts form a recognizable barrel and carriage, and it can be set in position for display. That is different from a cannon that fires. The NPS paper activity is a craft, not a launcher; its separate pressure experiment is a classroom demonstration, not a way to propel a projectile.

For a safe build, choose the paper model or a static display object. Do not convert either into a firing device. The cited sources document historical objects and educational activities, not tested modern construction plans for a live-fire miniature cannon.

- Print the NPS Build Your Own Cannon template.
- Cut out the carriage, barrel and support pieces.
- Fold the carriage and support, then glue or tape them as directed on the template.
- Roll the barrel piece into a cylinder and secure it as directed.
- Set the barrel into the carriage notches and position the support beneath it.
This makes a paper display model. The template does not describe loading or firing it. The NPS page was last updated August 10, 2026.
How can you demonstrate how a cannon works without building a launcher?
A separate NPS classroom activity uses a capped container and a dissolving Alka-Seltzer tablet to illustrate gas pressure. As carbon dioxide forms in the sealed container, pressure builds until the lid is pushed off. The NPS describes the effect this way: “The carbon dioxide gas formed when the Alka-Seltzer tablet dissolves, builds up pressure inside the sealed container until the enclosed area cannot contain it.”

- BMC Revolutionary War Cannon & Mortar 6pc Set
- Colors: Charcoal-Gray Barrels with Brown Chassis
- Size: Cannon 3.5x2x1.6 inch, Mortar 3.1x1.6x1.75 inch tall
- Scale: Approximately 1:32
- Made in China | Packaging: Clear Bag with Header Card
This demonstrates pressure, not a cannon mechanism or a safe projectile-launching method. Use the activity only as the NPS describes it; do not modify it into a launcher. The agency calls for safety glasses, adult supervision, standing back and making sure there is nothing for the lid to hit. Read the full NPS Cannon Experiment instructions before attempting it.
Paper craft or display model: which should you choose?
| Option | What it offers | Complexity and tools | Movement and use | Safety |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| NPS paper craft | Recognizable cannon shape made from a carriage, rolled barrel and support | Cutting, folding, rolling, glue or tape; follow the printed template | Display model; no firing function is described | Adult help may be useful with cutting; the activity is not a launcher |
| Static miniature display object | Potentially finer historical detail; the cited museum records document particular objects, not a universal kit specification | Requirements depend on the object; not stated in the cited collection records | Some documented models have moving or detailed features, but firing capability is not established by those records | Treat as a display object unless reliable documentation establishes otherwise; do not infer it can fire |
The NPS template is the clearest option when you want a free, defined build. Museum records are better for studying how miniature artillery has been represented; they do not establish current product availability or validate a working firing model.

What historical cannon models can teach
Size, materials and trade-offs
At Castillo de San Marcos and Fort Matanzas, the NPS describes iron and bronze artillery cast between about 1690 and 1846. It says iron was cheaper and lighter, while bronze guns lasted longer and could be reused if broken. At Castillo, the documented sizes range from 2-pounders to 32-pounders. The NPS notes that larger guns had greater range and damage, but could not be fired as quickly as smaller cannon. These details explain historical choices; they are not instructions for reproducing a functioning weapon.
Miniatures had more than one purpose
The Metropolitan Museum of Art describes miniature firearms made across Western Europe and Asia from the sixteenth through nineteenth centuries for different purposes, including toys, objets d’art, badges, jewelry, votive objects and demonstrations of gunsmith skill. Its English miniature toy musket dates to the late sixteenth or early seventeenth century. The museum record says it could fire a miniature bullet when loaded with gunpowder and ignited at its touchhole. That is evidence about a historical object, not safe modern guidance.

- The Model 1841 cannon was a lightweight gun used extensively during the Mexican War. Though fairly mobile at 900 pounds, its softball-sized shot was too small to do much damage. It was easily outranged, especially once rifled guns came into use.
- An extensive number of these 6-pounders existed at the outbreak of the Civil War, and were pressed into service by both sides. When the advantages of rifled guns that fired elongated projectiles across greater distances became apparent, the government began to convert older smoothbores into rifled weapons.

A model’s details do not prove it fires
Royal Museums Greenwich records a model cannon made in 1828 and attributed to John Thomas Towson. A transcribed label dated October 19, 1893, describes it as “Made in 1828 by the late Mr J. T. Towson, and the smallest piece of workmanship, composed of eight pieces that has ever been manufactured.” The museum cautions that Towson does not appear in the Great Exhibition catalogue index and that it found no obvious reference in Queen Victoria’s diary, so an alleged exhibition display is unconfirmed. The record identifies a model and its attributed date; it does not establish firing capability.

How does a cannon work?
At a high level, a cannon uses expanding gas to drive a projectile through a barrel. The historical records above show why artillery size, materials and design mattered, while the NPS pressure demonstration provides a simple classroom illustration of gas building pressure. Neither explanation is a construction or firing procedure. For a hands-on project, keep the model non-firing and use only the supervised educational activity as written.
