But current safety guidance from the Propane Education & Research Council (PERC) says not to modify propane cylinders: even one that seems empty can remain hazardous. The safer route is to use a purpose-built steel blank intended for instrument making, or choose a finished steel tongue drum.
What is a Hank drum?
“Hank” combines “Hang” and “tank.” The name refers to a steel tongue drum made in the recognizable shape of a tank, with the tank body acting as a resonator. Its notes come from tongues cut into the steel. Tongue geometry affects pitch, and makers tune by adjusting the tongues or, in some descriptions, adding weights.
Older hobbyist accounts describe making the instrument from a propane tank, including a 2008 account that used a new, never-filled 20-pound tank. That is a historical report, not evidence that modifying a propane cylinder is safe or recommended today.
Why a propane cylinder is not a safe DIY starting point
PERC’s Safety Guide for Portable Propane Cylinders warns: “Even an “empty” cylinder may contain enough propane to be hazardous.” PERC also advises against repairing or modifying propane cylinders. The tank’s apparent emptiness does not establish that it is safe to cut.

For that reason, this article does not provide directions for depressurizing, removing a valve, filling, heating, or cutting a propane cylinder. Historical build descriptions should not be treated as a safe procedure.
Safer ways to make or get a tongue drum
Build from a purpose-made steel blank
If you want a project, choose a steel blank specifically sold for instrument making and follow its maker’s instructions. Confirm that the blank is intended for tongue-drum work and that the supplier provides suitable design and safety guidance. No validated blank thickness, tongue dimensions, scale layout, or tuning chart is established here, so do not assume a generic steel plate or tank will produce a predictable result.

Buy a finished steel tongue drum
A finished instrument avoids the cutting and tuning work and has a design made for playing. Check the maker’s stated scale, materials, and care guidance before purchasing; prices and specifications vary by product.

How tongue-drum tuning works
Each cut tongue vibrates to produce a note, and its geometry influences the pitch. Tuning is iterative: a maker checks a tongue, makes a small adjustment, then checks again. Removing metal cannot be undone, so an adjustment can overshoot the intended pitch. Older accounts mention using a digital tuner, but they do not establish a dependable set of cut lengths, target notes, or accuracy for a general-purpose build.

One secondary description reports using elastic or bungee bands to control excess ringing and overtones on a tank-style drum. Treat that as an experiment described by that source, not a guaranteed remedy or a substitute for a suitable instrument design.

Steel tongue drums can be played with fingers or with soft percussion mallets. Mallets are optional; if you use them, check that the head is soft and compatible with the finished instrument so it does not damage the surface or produce an unwanted attack.
