To make your own gears, start by designing a matched pair—not by drawing teeth on two disks. For a simple external spur-gear pair, choose a ratio and tooth counts, use the same module or diametral-pitch system and compatible tooth geometry, then set center distance and backlash. Generate the geometry in CAD, check the fit in a prototype if useful, and validate the finished part for its actual load and operating conditions. A model or print alone does not prove that a gear is safe or durable in service.
How do I make my own gears?
For a beginner, the most manageable starting point is a simple external spur-gear pair: two parallel shafts with straight teeth that mesh. Define the job first, then work through the geometry as a pair. Autodesk’s spur-gear calculations reference identifies tooth count, module or diametral pitch, pressure angle, width and other geometry inputs as design parameters.
- Define the task. Decide what drives what, the desired speed change, available space, and whether this is a demonstration or a working component. For a real mechanism, establish the load, speed, duty cycle, environment and acceptable life before treating a design as a service part.
- Choose a ratio and tooth counts. For an ordinary external pair, the ratio follows the relationship between the two gears’ tooth counts. Select counts that meet the desired ratio and the constraints of your chosen geometry method; do not assume any tooth count will work equally well.
- Choose one tooth system and keep it consistent. Use module for metric design or diametral pitch for inch-based design. Both gears must share the same system and compatible tooth geometry. Autodesk notes that module and diametral pitch are reciprocal measures, but they should not be mixed casually with other conventions such as normal and transverse values.
- Set geometry and center distance. Specify pressure angle and the other relevant inputs in your CAD workflow. For the transverse-module convention, pitch diameter is tooth count multiplied by tangential module: d = z × mt, where d is pitch diameter, z is tooth count, and mt is tangential module. This relationship is a starting point, not a complete design specification.
- Generate and inspect the model. Use a gear generator or CAD workflow that accepts the selected parameters. Review reported dimensions and any warnings or failed criteria rather than treating a generated shape as automatically correct.
- Plan for backlash and manufacturing variation. Leave controlled free movement between teeth so normal variation and operating conditions do not cause binding. The suitable amount depends on the process and application.
- Prototype and validate. A prototype can reveal fit or interference problems. Before using the gear in service, evaluate its strength and operation with the actual loads, material, speed, mounting, lubrication and manufacturing accuracy.
What makes two gears mesh?
The teeth must be designed as a compatible pair. Tooth count affects ratio; module or diametral pitch sets tooth size; pressure angle and the remaining geometry determine the tooth form and how the pair engages. Center distance also matters: even correctly generated teeth can bind or mesh poorly if the shafts are positioned incorrectly.
For a simple spur-gear design, pitch diameter is useful for relating tooth count to module. Autodesk’s reference also gives base-circle diameter as pitch diameter multiplied by the cosine of the transverse pressure angle. These relationships depend on the stated convention, so use the matching inputs and units throughout your CAD model rather than combining unlike values.

A gear generator can help with geometry and calculations. Autodesk Inventor’s documented workflow accepts inputs such as pressure angle, helix angle, module and tooth count; its generator documentation describes calculated dimensions and strength checks, including warnings when inputs fail criteria. The available strength methods in that software documentation include Bach, Merrit, CSN 01 4686, ISO 6336, DIN 3990, ANSI/AGMA 2001-D04:2005 and Legacy ANSI. These are software-specific capabilities, not a guarantee that a design is sound: results depend on correct loads, materials and other application inputs. See Autodesk’s design spur gears and Spur Gears Component Generator documentation. Features can differ by product edition or version, so verify current product details if selecting software.
Why should a gear pair have backlash?
Backlash is the planned small amount of clearance or free movement between meshing teeth. It helps prevent binding when manufacturing variation, operating temperature, lubricant needs or the mechanism’s conditions affect the fit. Autodesk states, “Real gears must be manufactured with a specific backlash allowance.”

- Ergonomically Designed: Work in tight areas with a compact design that gets into tough spots
- Compact and Lightweight: Both tools are designed to fit into difficult to reach spaces. The 1/4" impact driver has a length of 5.55 in. and weighs just 2.8 lbs, while the 1/2" drill/driver measures only 7.5 in. and weighs 3.6 lbs
- Both the DEWALT impact driver and electric drill driver feature integrated LED work lights with a convenient 20-second delay, ensuring enhanced visibility in dimly lit or challenging work areas
- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
- Power drill cordless with 1/2" single sleeve ratcheting chuck provides tight bit gripping strength, making bit changes faster and more secure
In its Designing Spur Gear Backlash Allowance guidance, Autodesk identifies lubricant space, differential expansion between gears and housing, machining errors, and conditions such as frequent reversing or overrunning load as considerations. It describes two ways to provide backlash: reduce tooth thickness by cutting the blank deeper, or increase center distance beyond the theoretical value. The right allowance depends on the job; neither eliminating all play nor choosing a universal clearance is a sound default.
Can I 3D print gears?
Yes, a printed gear can be useful as a geometry or fit prototype, but printer, material and settings affect clearance, and a successful print does not establish strength or service life. Check the current documentation for your specific machine and material before choosing clearances.

Formlabs’ guide, which refers to the Form 1+ and Form 2 using Clear resin at 100 microns, recommends 0.5 mm minimum clearance between moving parts and gives gears as an example. It warns that other resins and layer heights can vary. Treat this as a manufacturer recommendation for that context—not a universal gear tolerance or a load rating. The guide does not establish a load capacity, fatigue life or material comparison for printed gears. See the Formlabs Design Guide for its stated context, and check current documentation for your own setup.
Which making route fits the job?
There is no universally best home process in the available guidance. Choose based on whether you need a fit check or a working component, the accuracy and material required, the expected load and speed, and how you will inspect and validate the result.

The cited design references do not provide a complete machining procedure or a universal material and strength specification.
What must be checked before using a gear in service?
A functioning pair in a hand test is not the same as a validated component. For a meaningful application, the design must account for the actual operating conditions and how the part is made and mounted.
- Required ratio, center-distance constraint and shaft arrangement
- Torque or load, speed, duty cycle and operating environment
- Material, lubrication and temperature effects
- Manufacturing accuracy, backlash and inspection method
- Whether a failure could create a safety risk
If the gear will carry meaningful loads, run at speed, heat up, or affect safety, these design references alone are not enough to specify a build. Use application-specific engineering calculations and appropriate testing before putting it into service.
