Maine’s New Giant 3D-Printing System Follows an Earlier Bio-Based Home

The University of Maine’s earlier printer produced a 600-square-foot bio-based home. Its newer Factory of the Future 1.0 is larger, but has not replaced conventional construction.

The University of Maine did not use its newest giant printer to build the house that made headlines. An earlier Ingersoll MasterPrint system produced BioHome3D, a roughly 600-square-foot, one-bedroom, one-bathroom structure that the university describes as the first 100%-bio-based 3D-printed house. On April 23, 2024, UMaine unveiled a much larger successor and research platform called Factory of the Future 1.0, or FoF 1.0.

FoF 1.0 was designed for large-scale polymer printing and other manufacturing processes, including potential housing work. It was not presented as a turnkey home-building machine, and the available evidence does not show that it had already printed BioHome3D.

The two-machine story behind the headline

The headline connects two related University of Maine achievements that occurred at different times:

  • BioHome3D: unveiled in November 2022 and printed with the earlier Ingersoll MasterPrint.
  • Factory of the Future 1.0: unveiled on April 23, 2024 as a substantially larger hybrid manufacturing system.

UMaine’s own accounts identify the MasterPrint—not FoF 1.0—as the system used to produce BioHome3D. UMaine’s Advanced Structures and Composites Center describes the distinction here.

What was BioHome3D?

BioHome3D was a demonstration of how additive manufacturing could use materials associated with Maine’s forest-products industry. UMaine describes it as a 100%-bio-based 3D-printed house, approximately 600 square feet in size, with one bedroom and one bathroom.

That description should not be read to mean that a printer produced every part of a finished, occupied home. A printed building project can still require conventional foundations, windows, doors, roofing, insulation, electrical systems, plumbing, heating, finishes, inspections and site work. In BioHome3D’s case, the important demonstration was the use of bio-based material and large-scale additive manufacturing in the home’s construction concept.

What is Factory of the Future 1.0?

FoF 1.0 is more accurately described as a large-scale hybrid additive-manufacturing system than simply a giant house printer. According to UMaine’s announcement, the system combines several capabilities:

  • Large-scale additive manufacturing
  • Subtractive manufacturing, such as machining
  • Continuous tape layup
  • Robotic-arm operations

UMaine also described planned work involving sensors, collaborative robotics, high-performance computing and artificial intelligence. That broader capability explains why the system is relevant to bridges, energy infrastructure, maritime vessels, defense applications and rapidly deployable structures—not only houses.

How large is the new system?

UMaine stated that FoF 1.0 can produce objects within a maximum reported envelope of:

Measure Stated capability
Length Up to 96 feet
Width Up to 32 feet
Height Up to 18 feet
Material throughput Up to 500 pounds per hour

UMaine said the system was four times larger than the earlier record-holding printer. These figures describe the machine’s stated manufacturing envelope and material rate—not the size of a house it can necessarily print in one uninterrupted operation.

Nor does 500 pounds per hour mean that a house can be completed at that rate. A real project would also involve design, feedstock preparation, quality control, cooling or curing, machining, reinforcement, assembly, transportation, utility installation, finishes, permitting and site work.

Is it really the world’s largest 3D printer?

At the April 2024 unveiling, UMaine said FoF 1.0 surpassed its own 2019 Guinness World Record for the largest polymer 3D printer. The careful version of the claim is therefore: UMaine described FoF 1.0 as the world’s largest polymer 3D printer at the time of its unveiling.

That is narrower than saying it is permanently the world’s largest 3D printer of any kind. The claim does not automatically cover concrete printers, metal printers or every robotic construction system, and a 2024 record should not be presented as a verified, current 2026 ranking without updated independent confirmation.

Why housing is part of the Maine project

The housing application is tied to a substantial need in Maine. UMaine’s release cites a MaineHousing estimate that the state needs approximately 80,000 additional homes by 2030, including homes affordable to households at or below area median income.

Large-scale printing could eventually help with some parts of that challenge by:

  • Reducing repetitive labor for selected structural components
  • Producing parts more quickly under controlled factory conditions
  • Using local wood residuals or other bio-based feedstocks
  • Reducing dependence on some conventional construction supply chains
  • Enabling lightweight or rapidly deployable structures

Those are potential benefits and research goals, not proof that the technology has already made homes inexpensive or solved the state’s housing shortage.

What the printer can—and cannot—do for construction

Potential advantages

Scale: A very large envelope can accommodate building-scale components rather than small consumer objects.

Material flexibility: Thermoplastic polymers and bio-based materials may support lightweight parts, complex geometry and alternative uses for forest-industry residuals.

Fewer production handoffs: Combining printing, machining, tape layup and robotic work in one platform could reduce the need to move large parts among separate machines.

Important constraints

A printed shell is not a finished home. Foundations, weatherproofing, insulation, mechanical systems, electrical work, doors, windows, roofing, finishes and code inspections remain central to the project.

Novel materials require qualification. Bio-based feedstocks must be evaluated for structural performance, moisture resistance, fire behavior, durability and consistency.

Factory production creates logistics problems. Printing components off-site can improve environmental control but may add transportation, lifting and assembly costs. Printing at the building site avoids some transport but introduces other requirements for site access, weather protection and equipment setup.

A record-sized machine is not automatically economical. FoF 1.0 requires a specialized facility, software, feedstock handling, trained personnel, maintenance and safety systems. The supplied evidence does not establish a per-square-foot cost, labor-hour comparison or independent life-cycle assessment.

Why polymer printing is different from concrete printing

Many people associate 3D-printed buildings with robotic systems that extrude layers of concrete to form walls. FoF 1.0 is not described that way. UMaine presented it as a thermoplastic polymer printer and hybrid manufacturing platform, with a material direction that includes bio-based feedstocks.

That difference affects engineering, logistics and regulation. Polymer and composite components can be lighter and easier to shape, but they still need an appropriate structural design, connections, fire strategy, weather resistance and building-code pathway. “Bio-based” also does not automatically mean low-carbon: a full assessment would need to consider processing energy, additives, transportation, durability and end-of-life treatment.

What happens next?

The most important unanswered questions are practical rather than spectacular:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • What does a complete building cost when design, assembly, utilities and site work are included?
  • How will novel polymer or bio-based components be approved under applicable building codes?
  • How will strength, fire performance, moisture resistance and long-term durability be demonstrated?
  • Will future homes be printed on-site, or will large factory-made sections be transported and assembled?
  • Can wood-based feedstocks be produced consistently at the volume and quality required?
  • How much conventional construction labor will still be needed?
  • Can the system move from research demonstrations to repeatable, permitted and financially viable projects?

These questions matter because manufacturing efficiency is only one part of housing affordability. Land, financing, permitting, utilities, transportation, insurance and local market conditions can have just as much influence on a home’s final price.

The bottom line

UMaine’s work represents a genuine large-scale manufacturing milestone, but the headline needs a correction. The earlier Ingersoll MasterPrint produced the bio-based BioHome3D. The newer Factory of the Future 1.0, unveiled in April 2024, is a much larger hybrid system intended to support future housing and industrial research.

It may eventually help produce affordable or rapidly deployable building components. For now, its size and throughput demonstrate engineering capability—not proof that entire neighborhoods can be printed quickly, cheaply or without conventional construction.
