Compare the product’s actual or minimum surfaced dimensions, read the full grade stamp—including species and seasoning information—and make sure the marked grade suits the intended use. For structural work, follow the project requirements and applicable design values; a grade name alone does not establish that a board is right or safe for a particular span or load.
Check actual dimensions, not just the nominal label
A label such as 2×4 gives the lumber’s nominal size, not its finished measurement. Compare the label with the actual or minimum surfaced dimensions shown by the seller. The American Wood Council (AWC) says the cited uniform method-of-sale rules permit nominal labels when “nominal” or “nom” is used and actual or minimum surfaced dimensions are prominently displayed. State requirements can vary, so check the rules that apply where you are buying.

Read the whole grade stamp
A grade stamp is an identification mark, not just a grade abbreviation. For visually graded lumber, the American Lumber Standard Committee (ALSC) describes common elements as the grading-agency trademark, mill identification, grade designation, species identification, and seasoning condition. Stamp layouts and exceptions vary by product and rules, so verify unfamiliar marks with the named agency and the applicable grading rule.
- Agency mark: identifies the grading agency supervising the grade mark.
- Mill identification: identifies the mill associated with the lumber.
- Grade: gives the grade designation under the applicable rules.
- Species or species group: identifies the wood or combination covered by the stamp.
- Seasoning condition: may be shown with a moisture-related designation.
AWC explains that grade marks identify species, grade, grading agency, and mill. ALSC administers accreditation for lumber grademarking under PS 20. For current grading rules, accredited agencies, and sample stamps, use ALSC’s official resources and the AWC grade-mark guidance.

Understand what a grade says—and what it does not
A grade limits characteristics and manufacturing imperfections that affect lumber’s strength and utility; it is not simply a visual beauty rating. The Western Wood Products Association (WWPA) separates dimension-lumber categories into structural light framing, light framing, stud, and structural joists and planks. These categories serve different applications, not a universal ranking in which the best-sounding label automatically fits every project.
For nonstructural selection, use the grade category and product information to check whether the lumber is intended for the job. For structural members, use the plans, applicable building requirements, and design values for the exact species, grade, size, and conditions. A retail grade name cannot determine member sizing or safety on its own.

Check both species and grade
Species and grade work together; neither should be read in isolation. A stamp may name a species group or a combination of species rather than one species. ALSC says that when selecting an applicable allowable property value for a combination stamp, the user should use the weakest species or species group shown. Do not assume every species in a combination has identical design values.
When comparing structural options, compare the applicable design values for the exact stamped species and grade, as well as the project requirements. A grade abbreviation by itself does not supply all the information needed to make that comparison.

Know what KD, S-Dry, and S-GRN mean
Seasoning marks classify lumber under the applicable grading rules; they are not a direct measurement of the board’s moisture at the moment you buy it. WWPA gives these classifications for its stamp guidance:

ALSC also describes S-Dry as 19% maximum, MC15 as 15% maximum, KD as dried to the limit specified in grading rules, and S-Grn as over 19% and unseasoned. Because terms and stamp details depend on the relevant rules, check the named grading agency when a designation is unfamiliar. If you want to check current moisture separately, a consumer moisture meter can provide an additional reading. It does not verify the grade, species, or structural capacity.
