There is no single agreed global total for the lumber equipment market because research firms include different machinery and regions. Published estimates for 2024–2026 range from about USD 5 billion to USD 25 billion, with forecasts reaching USD 8.45 billion to USD 40.01 billion between 2034 and 2036. The most comparable reports cluster around annual growth of roughly 4.6%–4.9%, while the narrower sawmill-machinery segment is forecast to grow more slowly.
What the lumber equipment market includes
Lumber equipment is the machinery used to turn logs and wood into boards, panels and finished wood products. The core chain includes sawmills and sawing machines, log handling, planers, milling and drilling machines, chippers, kilns and other drying systems, sanders, finishing lines, paneling or sheathing equipment, and computer numerical control (CNC) systems.

Scope is the reason published totals differ so widely. A narrow study may count primary and secondary wood-processing machines only. A broader study may add logging, harvesting, material handling and other forestry equipment. Geography, exchange-rate assumptions, inclusion of replacement parts and services, and forecast methodology also vary. The figures below should therefore be read as separate market definitions, not added together.

Which equipment categories matter most?
Sawmills and sawing machines
Sawing is the market anchor because it is the first major conversion step from log to dimensional lumber. Emergen Research assigns sawmill equipment 42% of its 2024 market. Fact.MR projects sawing machines at 52% of its product mix in 2026. The percentages are not directly comparable because the reports use different denominators, but both identify primary sawing as the largest equipment family in their respective scopes.
Drying, planing and finishing
Kilns and other drying systems control moisture before planing, finishing, structural use or shipment. Planers, sanders and finishing lines determine surface quality and dimensional consistency. Their economic value is tied to recovery: stable moisture and accurate machining can reduce downgrade and rework, although the actual benefit depends on species, feedstock and operating practice.
Chipping, milling, drilling and panel production
Chippers turn residual wood into chips for panels, pulp, fuel or other products. Milling and drilling machines support component production, while paneling and sheathing equipment serves engineered-wood and building-product lines. CNC equipment links cutting, routing and drilling to digital production files and is increasingly specified where repeatability or complex parts justify the investment.

How buyers should compare lumber equipment
A headline machine price is not enough to select equipment. Compare the following dimensions for the specific log mix and product plan:
- Throughput and yield: rated feed speed, recovery from each log, kerf loss and the size range the line can process.
- Installation: fixed industrial lines generally provide higher capacity, while portable systems trade throughput for mobility and access to dispersed timber.
- Automation: manual, semi-automatic and fully automatic configurations have different labor, training and maintenance requirements.
- Drying and energy: kiln cycle time, heat source, insulation, controls and energy use per unit of saleable lumber.
- Data and controls: sensors, machine monitoring, production software and IoT connectivity can improve scheduling and maintenance, but require compatible networks and staff.
- Serviceability: local technicians, spare-parts availability, commissioning support and the supplier’s response time can matter more than a small difference in purchase price.
- Total cost of ownership: include foundations, utilities, extraction, blades and tooling, labor, planned downtime, financing, compliance and end-of-life value.
What is driving demand through 2036?
Construction and housing
Residential and commercial construction create the basic demand for structural lumber, panels and related wood products. New building activity tends to raise orders for primary processing, while renovation and repair support replacement and finishing capacity.
Sustainable and mass-timber building
Mass-timber and other engineered-wood systems expand the need for predictable grading, drying, machining and panel production. The opportunity is strongest where building codes, design practice and local timber supply support wider wood use; it is not uniform across countries.

How to use the forecasts when planning a project
- Define the boundary: state whether the project covers a sawmill, secondary processing, kilns, logging and handling, or the entire plant.
- Describe the feedstock and output: document species, log diameter, moisture, target dimensions, grades and annual operating hours.
- Model capacity and recovery: compare saleable output, residual streams, downtime and labor at realistic—not just rated—throughput.
- Obtain site and compliance requirements: confirm power, heat, extraction, foundations, fire protection, permits and transport access.
- Price lifecycle cost: request tooling, consumables, service contracts, software, training, warranties and energy assumptions alongside the capital quote.
- Stress-test demand: use conservative construction, timber-price and energy scenarios before committing to capacity.
The forecasts support a steady expansion narrative, but their different boundaries mean they are best used to frame scenarios, not to promise a single 2036 market value. Sawmilling remains the central equipment category, with drying, planing and digitally controlled automation providing the main adjacent investment themes.
