Lumber buying guide for Algeria: species, grades, sizes and treatment

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For most Algerian projects, buy lumber by verified species, strength grade, moisture condition, treatment and measured dimensions—not by a species name alone. Aleppo pine and eucalyptus are the main documented domestic supply species, while imported pine, spruce/fir, oak, beech and other woods fill specific construction and joinery needs. Before ordering, define the service environment, obtain a written specification, verify the applicable Algerian or project standard, and inspect the shipment when it arrives.

What to specify before you ask for a price

A quotation that says only “pine boards” is too vague for construction. Send the supplier a complete schedule containing:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Common name and, where possible, botanical name (for example, Pinus halepensis).
  • Use: structural frame, roof, formwork, flooring, joinery, furniture, pallet, exterior work or another application.
  • Rough, sawn or planed condition.
  • Nominal and required actual thickness, width and length.
  • Moisture requirement, including whether the stock must be kiln-dried.
  • Visual or machine strength grade and the standard governing that grade.
  • Allowable knots, splits, warp, wane, decay, insect damage and other defects.
  • Treatment method and, where applicable, treatment class or preservative retention.
  • Quantity, tolerances, origin, batch identification and inspection documents.

This information prevents a low quotation from being based on thinner, wetter, lower-grade or untreated material than the project requires.

Algeria’s supply picture

A World Bank forestry assessment, which is historical rather than a current market census, described domestic supply as approximately 70% Aleppo pine, 20% eucalyptus and 10% other species, mainly zeen oak, cedar and Pinus pinaster. The same assessment estimated annual wood-product consumption at about 1.1 million m³, with more than 90% imported and imports primarily consisting of sawn wood. Treat those percentages as context, not a promise of what a merchant has today; confirm species, dimensions and lead time with suppliers in your city.

Local material can reduce freight and simplify replenishment, but the best choice still depends on drying, grading, straightness and the intended exposure. Imported stock may offer more predictable dimensions or a documented structural grade, yet it adds tariff, origin, phytosanitary and delivery checks.

Species comparison for Algerian buyers

Species or group Typical buying rationale Checks before acceptance Availability and documentation
Aleppo pine (Pinus halepensis) Documented dominant domestic supply; practical for general construction when properly graded. Moisture, knots, resin pockets, warp, splits and a stated strength grade. Local supply is historically significant; current stock and sawmill quality must be confirmed.
Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus spp.) Documented second-largest domestic supply component; can suit uses requiring a hard, dense wood. Drying schedule, movement after installation, machining behavior, checking and grade. Named separately in Algerian tariff categories; species and treatment should appear on the invoice.
Other pine (Pinus spp.) Common imported softwood option for framing, roof work and general sawn stock. Exact pine species, cross-section, moisture, knots, treatment and grade marking. Tariff headings distinguish untreated pine by a 15 cm cross-section threshold and separate treated categories.
Spruce/fir (Picea/Abies spp.) Imported construction stock where light weight and regular sections are useful. Confirm whether it is spruce or fir, then verify grade, moisture and actual dimensions. Tariff references group these species and also use a 15 cm cross-section distinction.
Oak Furniture, flooring, joinery and wear-resistant work where hardness and appearance matter. Straightness, drying, end checks, wane, grade and surface quality. Listed as a distinct non-softwood category, including treated forms.
Beech Furniture and joinery requiring a hard, uniform material. Moisture, movement risk, machining quality, defects and finish requirements. Listed as a distinct non-softwood category, including treated forms.
Birch, poplar, cedar, teak, meranti and other species Useful for particular appearance, weight, durability or machining requirements. Confirm legality, origin, intended-use performance and whether the proposed grade is documented. Tariff references include several of these groups; unfamiliar species need extra verification.

Species does not equal performance. Two boards sold under the same common name can differ substantially because of growth rate, drying, knots, processing and grading. For a structural order, the grade and governing standard are more decisive than the marketing name.

Choosing lumber for the use

Structural frames and roofs

Request a strength grade, grading method (visual or machine), moisture condition and the standard used to assign design values. Give the documentation to the project engineer, who must confirm that the grade and design values are accepted for the Algerian project. Do not substitute a “strong-looking” board for a specified grade.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Formwork and temporary works

Prioritize straightness, repeatable thickness, adequate stiffness, clean faces and resistance to the wet conditions created by concrete. A reusable formwork schedule should state the number of expected cycles and the allowable surface defects. Untreated stock may be suitable when exposure is brief and the design permits it, but wet storage can still cause staining, swelling and loss of accuracy.

Flooring, furniture and joinery

Specify appearance grade, moisture range, machining and finishing requirements. Oak and beech may be suitable for hard-wearing or visible work; pine, spruce/fir, poplar or eucalyptus may be selected for weight, cost or local supply. Ask for straight, dry boards and define acceptable knots, color variation, end checks and sapwood before production.

Exterior, wet or soil-contact work

Use a treatment suited to the service condition, or select naturally durable wood where the design and engineer permit it. Exterior walls, decks, fences, ground-contact members and insect-prone areas need a different protection strategy from covered interior framing. Treatment does not correct poor grading, excessive moisture or bad detailing.

Grades: what a professional quotation should show

There is no single project-independent rule that maps every Algerian structural application to a C16 or C24 label. Ask which Algerian or project standard governs the purchase and have the engineer approve the proposed equivalence or design values. IANOR’s standards catalogue is the authoritative starting point for locating applicable Algerian standards. Its public catalogue page was updated 30 June 2026 and reports more than 12,032 standards developed by 73 national technical committees.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For each structural batch, require the seller to state:

  • Species and botanical name where possible.
  • Visual or machine grade and the complete governing standard.
  • Nominal versus actual section size and permitted tolerances.
  • Moisture content or kiln-dried status at dispatch.
  • Limits for knots, slope of grain, splits, checks, warp, wane, decay and insect holes.
  • Whether the mark applies to every piece, a bundle or a production batch.
  • Treatment process, preservative and retention or service class where applicable.
  • Origin, batch number and inspection or conformity records.

If the supplier cannot identify the standard or provide grade evidence, treat the material as ungraded and do not use it for load-bearing work without an engineer’s written decision.

Sizes, cross-sections and measurement

The Algeria-specific tariff reference uses a 15 cm cross-section break for several rough-pine and Abies/Picea headings. That threshold helps classification; it is not a retail dimensional catalogue and does not tell you which section is safe for a beam or rafter. Your structural drawings determine the required section.

Always record both the supplier’s nominal size and your measured size. Measure thickness, width and length at several points, because one end can be larger or wetter than the other. Record the actual cross-section used for any tariff classification and for the engineer’s check.

Delivery inspection checklist

  • Measure a representative sample from each bundle.
  • Check bow, cup, twist, spring, end splits and excessive wane.
  • Look for fungal staining, soft decay, insect holes, resin damage and crushed edges.
  • Use a moisture meter appropriate to the species, and note the measurement location and conditions.
  • Compare visible defects with the quoted grade limits.
  • Separate questionable pieces, photograph them and notify the supplier before installation.
  • Keep the delivery note, invoice, grade documents and inspection record together with the project file.

Treatment: when and how to specify it

Untreated lumber is appropriate only where the design and exposure allow it. Exterior, wet, soil-contact and insect-prone service generally requires a specified preservative treatment. The Algerian tariff reference recognizes treated softwood and non-softwood, including wood treated with paint, creosote or other preservatives.

Ask for the treatment process, preservative name, target service condition, retention or penetration information where relevant, treatment date and any handling or drying instructions. A surface coating is not automatically equivalent to pressure treatment, and a treated board is not automatically structurally graded.

Storage after treatment

Keep bundles off the ground on level spacers, protect them from direct rain and sun, and allow air circulation. Do not wrap wet timber tightly in impermeable plastic. Separate treated stock from untreated stock and retain the treatment paperwork so cut ends, field drilling and required re-treatment can be handled according to the product instructions.

Consumer preservative products

For a small repair or non-structural project, search for an exterior wood preservative and select a formulation whose label matches the wood species and service environment. Follow the label for preparation, application rate, drying time, ventilation, personal protection and recoating. Product brand, formulation and Algerian marketplace availability vary, so verify the label and local supply before purchase.

Import, tariff and phytosanitary checks

Species, treatment status, use and cross-section can affect the tariff heading. Give the customs broker the same precise description used on the quotation: species, rough or planed condition, dimensions, treated or untreated status, quantity, origin and intended use. Do not let a generic description such as “wood boards” replace the technical description.

An IPPC country record states that Algeria implemented ISPM 15 for imports and exports under implementation version 2009, and that the ISPM No. 15 mark is registered as a trademark. Check pallets, crates, skids and dunnage used in international trade for the compliant mark and ask the shipper or importer which shipment documents are required. ISPM 15 applies to wood packaging material; it does not prove the structural grade of the lumber itself.

Documents to request

  • Commercial invoice and packing list with species, dimensions, treatment and quantity.
  • Origin documentation and any legality or harvesting documentation required for the species.
  • Tariff classification supplied or confirmed by the customs broker.
  • Phytosanitary documents required for the shipment.
  • ISPM 15 evidence for wood packaging, pallets and dunnage.
  • Grade certificates, treatment records and inspection reports for structural or treated stock.

A practical buying workflow

  1. Define the service. Write down the member or product, loads, span, interior or exterior exposure, moisture, soil contact and expected life.
  2. Shortlist species. Balance local availability, durability, movement, machining, appearance, grade evidence, lead time and documentation.
  3. Issue a complete request for quotation. Include species, botanical name, grade standard, nominal and actual dimensions, moisture, treatment, tolerances, quantity, origin and delivery point.
  4. Verify the standard. Check the applicable IANOR or project standard and obtain the engineer’s approval before accepting a structural grade.
  5. Resolve import details. Confirm tariff classification, invoices, origin documents, treatment status and ISPM 15-compliant packaging with the importer or broker.
  6. Inspect delivery. Measure representative pieces, check moisture and defects, compare the batch with the order, and document any nonconformance before use.
  7. Store correctly. Keep timber supported, ventilated, protected from weather and separated by species, grade and treatment.

Common buying mistakes and fixes

Ordering by common name only

Problem: “Pine” can describe different species, grades and moisture conditions. Fix: require the botanical name where possible and the governing grade standard.

Assuming domestic means dry or graded

Problem: Local origin does not guarantee kiln drying, straightness or structural classification. Fix: request moisture data, defect limits and grade evidence for every structural batch.

Using tariff categories as design guidance

Problem: A 15 cm customs threshold does not establish a safe beam size. Fix: use the project drawings and engineer’s calculations for dimensions; use tariff references only for classification.

Treating after installation without a service specification

Problem: A generic coating may not protect soil-contact or persistently wet timber. Fix: specify the exposure class first, then select a compatible preservative and document application.

Accepting a certificate without matching the bundle

Problem: A document may cover another species, size or production batch. Fix: match batch numbers, marks, dimensions and treatment records to the delivered material.

Decision checklist

  • Is the lumber for a load-bearing or non-structural use?
  • What exposure will it see: interior dry, exterior sheltered, exposed weather, wet, soil contact or insect risk?
  • Is the selected species available with the required grade and moisture condition?
  • Are nominal and actual dimensions, including tolerances, written into the order?
  • Does the engineer accept the cited standard and design values?
  • Is treatment documented and suitable for the service environment?
  • For imports, are tariff, origin, phytosanitary and ISPM 15 requirements assigned to a responsible party?
  • Will someone measure and record the shipment before installation?

Bottom line

Start with the use and exposure, then buy the species that can be supplied with the required grade, moisture, dimensions and documentation. Aleppo pine and eucalyptus are important domestic options, while imported pine, spruce/fir, oak and beech can fill different structural, joinery and durability requirements. A precise written specification, IANOR or project-standard verification, suitable treatment and a documented delivery inspection are the safeguards that matter more than a species label alone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Aleppo pine the best lumber for construction in Algeria?

It is a practical local option and the historically dominant domestic supply species, but it is suitable only when the delivered boards meet the required moisture, defect and strength-grade specification for the project.

Does ISPM 15 prove that imported lumber is structurally safe?

No. ISPM 15 concerns pallets, crates, skids and dunnage used in international trade. Structural safety requires separate species, grade, moisture and design verification.

What does the 15 cm cross-section threshold mean?

It is a distinction used in several Algerian tariff headings for rough pine and Abies/Picea products. It helps customs classification but does not prescribe a safe structural size.

Should exterior wood always be pressure-treated?

Not automatically. Treatment should match the service condition and design. Exterior, wet, soil-contact and insect-prone uses generally need a specified preservative system, while sheltered exposure may permit another approved solution.
