Open windows wide for about five minutes, two or three times a day, rather than leaving them tilted. Add a 5–10-minute airing after waking and during or immediately after cooking or showering. This short, intensive air exchange removes moisture, odours, carbon dioxide and household pollutants while limiting heat loss.

What Lüften means

Lüften is deliberate ventilation: replacing indoor air with outdoor air by opening windows. In winter, cold outdoor air contains relatively little water vapour. When it enters and warms, its relative humidity falls, so it can take up moisture from the room. The same air exchange removes odours, carbon dioxide and pollutants produced by people, cooking, washing, bathing and heating.

How often to open windows in winter

The Umweltbundesamt (UBA) advises that, depending on temperature and wind, two or three airing cycles of about five minutes per room are generally sufficient in the cold season. Open one or more windows fully; opposite windows can be opened together for cross-ventilation, which speeds the exchange.

Situation Practical routine
Ordinary occupied room Windows wide open for about five minutes, two to three times daily.
Bedroom Air for 5–10 minutes after getting up.
Kitchen Ventilate during or immediately after cooking; close the kitchen door where practical.
Bathroom Open the window wide for 5–10 minutes after showering; wipe water from walls and floors.
Extra moisture load Add an airing cycle when several people visit, laundry is drying, plants are numerous or an aquarium is present.

Stoßlüften versus a tilted window

Why wide-open windows work better

Stoßlüften exchanges a large volume of air quickly. The short duration limits the time available for furniture and walls to cool, so the room can return to its set temperature more easily.

Why permanent tilt ventilation is a poor winter default

UBA advises avoiding constantly tilted windows. A narrow opening can waste heat over many hours while cooling the wall and reveal around the window. Those colder surfaces are more prone to condensation, particularly in poorly insulated buildings.

Humidity, condensation and mould

Keep indoor relative humidity roughly between 40% and 60%, the UBA recommendation. Place a simple digital hygrometer in regularly used rooms and ventilate when readings remain above about 60%.

  • AIR CIRCULATION: Designed specifically to pull in fresh outside air and circulate it evenly within your room.
  • 3-SPEED CONTROL: Choose between Low, Medium, and High airflow settings using the simple manual dial operation.
  • AUTO-LOCKING EXPANDERS: Built-in accordion expanders adjust from 22-1/4" to 33" wide and lock automatically for a secure window fit.

  • MANUALLY REVERSIBLE DESIGN: Draw cool, fresh outside air into your space, or manually turn the unit around in the window to pull warm, stale air out of the room.

Cold air holds less water vapour. If a room is allowed to become too cold, moisture is more likely to condense on windows, corners and exterior walls. UBA warns that keeping occupied rooms below approximately 16–18 °C during the heating season can substantially increase mould risk. A practical target for regularly used rooms is about 19–20 °C during the day and 18 °C overnight.

  • Keep doors closed between warmer, humid rooms and cooler rooms so moisture does not migrate to cold surfaces.
  • In poorly insulated homes, leave several centimetres between large furniture and exterior walls.
  • Dry visible bathroom water from walls and floors after showering.

A room-by-room winter routine

Bedroom

Open the window wide for 5–10 minutes after waking. If the bedroom is cooler than the rest of the home, keep its door closed while airing and afterward to prevent warm, humid air entering and condensing on cold surfaces.

Basement

Winter basement airing can generally be done at any time of day. In summer, air during cooler periods instead: warm, humid outdoor air can condense on cold basement walls.

Heating without wasting energy

  1. Close room doors where they separate different temperature or moisture zones.
  2. Turn down or pause the radiator briefly if your controls allow it.
  3. Open windows fully for the planned five-minute cycle, using cross-ventilation when available.
  4. Close the windows promptly and restore the normal heating setting.
  5. Check a hygrometer rather than airing continuously; increase frequency when humidity stays above 60%.

Do not let regularly occupied rooms become excessively cold. Ventilation and adequate heating work together: airing removes moisture, while a stable temperature keeps surfaces warmer and less likely to reach the condensation point.

Window airing or mechanical ventilation?

Factor Window airing Mechanical ventilation
Control Short, manual bursts when needed. Continuous, regulated air exchange when correctly designed and operating.
Moisture spikes Immediate response after cooking or showering. Depends on system capacity and room served; boost controls may help.
Comfort and energy Brief drafts and some heat loss during opening. More even airflow, but equipment and installation affect performance.
Maintenance Clean windows and keep openings usable. Regular filter checks, cleaning, replacement and functional checks.
Building coverage Can serve any room with an opening. Only serves rooms connected to the system.

A whole-home system can make routine window airing almost unnecessary, although UBA still identifies moisture spikes, odours and unusual pollutant loads as reasons to ventilate. A system serving only selected rooms does not remove the need to air the others through windows. Follow the manufacturer’s maintenance schedule and replace compatible filters as required.

When Lüften is not enough

Window ventilation cannot fix water entering through the structure, major thermal bridges, leaking plumbing or established mould. Persistent damp walls, recurring mould, or humidity that remains high despite correct airing require a building assessment and qualified remediation. Do not simply seal or paint over mould before its moisture source is addressed.
