Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAct quickly: separate the garment that bled, keep stained clothes out of the dryer, check each care label, and spot-test any treatment in a hidden area. For washable colored clothes, a label-compatible oxygen-bleach soak is usually the best next step. For white clothes, a commercial color remover or diluted chlorine bleach may be an option only if the fabric and care label allow it.
What to do first
- Stop heat and separate the load. Remove the garment that released dye. Do not tumble-dry the stained items; heat can set transferred color. Air-dry them while you assess the stain. Whirlpool recommends air-drying and checking whether the stain remains.
- Read the care labels. Check whether the item is washable and whether the label permits bleach. Pretest any cleaning product on an inconspicuous area; University of Georgia Extension advises testing each cleaning agent for colorfastness before use: University of Georgia Extension guidance.
- Choose a treatment for the garment. Colored and white clothes may need different products. Follow the relevant instructions below, and do not combine treatments or household chemicals.
- Rewash and inspect before drying. If color remains, repeat a compatible treatment before using the dryer. Dye that has been set by heat is harder to remove, and results vary.
How to treat dye transfer on colored clothes
Use a color-safe oxygen bleach that is compatible with the garment’s care label. Follow the product’s dilution and soaking directions, dissolve powder in water before adding clothes, and rewash with detergent afterward. Whirlpool describes soaking for up to eight hours; that is a maximum in its guidance, not a universal soak time for every product or fabric. Air-dry and check the result before using heat. Whirlpool’s dye-transfer guidance and Maytag’s advice on oxygen bleach both emphasize using a suitable product and testing first.
Try detergent pretreatment for a localized stain
Maytag recommends applying enzyme-based detergent or stain remover to the affected area, gently working it in, soaking the item in cool water for 30 minutes, then laundering according to the care label. Ariel also recommends detergent soaking and rewashing at the hottest temperature the label allows. Follow the directions for the product you choose, and do not use a hotter setting than the garment permits. Maytag and Ariel.
How to treat dye transfer on white clothes
For a white, washable garment, a commercial color remover may be appropriate; Mississippi State University Extension lists this as an option for dye transfer on white garments. Read its package instructions and verify that the fabric is suitable. Mississippi State University Extension laundry guidance.

Diluted chlorine bleach is a narrower option, not a general-purpose stain treatment. Use it only when the care label and fabric permit it, and follow the product directions. Clorox describes a diluted soak of up to five minutes for suitable fibers, followed by thorough rinsing. It warns against bleaching wool, silk, mohair, leather, and spandex. Clorox’s guidance on color-bleeding stains.
Will vinegar remove dye transfer?
Do not count on vinegar to remove transferred dye. Maytag describes an equal-parts vinegar-and-water pretreatment, but Clorox’s cited consumer case reports that repeated vinegar washing did not remove the unwanted color. It is not an established universal fix. Never mix vinegar with chlorine bleach: the combination can produce toxic results. Maytag and Clorox.

Safety and fabrics that need extra care
- Never mix chlorine bleach with vinegar or ammonia. Whirlpool warns that combining bleach with these products can be toxic.
- Test colorfastness in a hidden area before treatment. OxiClean also advises dissolving powder in water before adding fabric and not mixing its product with chlorine bleach or other household chemicals. OxiClean product guidance.
- For dry-clean-only, delicate, non-colorfast, leather, wool, silk, mohair, or elastane-containing garments, follow the garment label or consult a professional cleaner. No single treatment is established for all these fabrics.
How to reduce the chance of color bleeding again
- Wash new dark or brightly colored items separately or with similar colors for the first cycles.
- Use the coldest setting the care label allows when appropriate.
- Do not leave mixed-color wet laundry sitting in the washer.
Dark and bright garments, along with some synthetic fabrics, can be more prone to releasing dye, according to Whirlpool.
