The right route depends on your vehicle’s make, model, year, market and key system. A replacement may need a new blade cut, electronic programming, or both. A dealer or a qualified automotive locksmith can tell you what is supported for your exact vehicle.
First, identify what kind of key you lost
This guide focuses on vehicle keys. House keys, safe keys and other lock keys involve different hardware and procedures; the sources cited here do not establish one general method for replacing them without an original. Contact the lock manufacturer or a qualified provider familiar with that specific lock.
For a vehicle, note its year, make, model and market. Also identify whether the missing key was a traditional metal key, a transponder key, a remote key or a smart key. These systems can require different replacement and programming work.
Can a car key be made without the original?
Often, yes. A vehicle-specific key number or code may let a dealer or qualified workshop obtain or cut a mechanical key without copying the missing one. For example, Nissan’s 2024 Juke owner’s manual says the key number is required when all keys are lost and there is no original to duplicate; it directs owners to a dealer or qualified workshop. GM’s November 2021 service bulletin describes requesting a new key code or cut after loss or theft for 2022 and prior GM passenger cars and trucks, with ownership validation. Its process applies to those vehicles and should not be treated as a universal procedure. GM Bulletin 12-00-89-002E
A cut key may still need electronic programming
A metal blade that fits the ignition or door is not necessarily enough to start a vehicle. Many keys include a transponder or other electronics that must be recognized by the vehicle’s security system. A remote or smart key may also need programming. Ford explains that its PATS key is programmed specifically for the vehicle and says towing to a dealer may be required in some cases. Ford: How do I get a replacement Ford key?

When arranging service, confirm whether the quote covers the physical key, cutting and any required programming. Ask the provider to verify capability for your exact model before dispatch; equipment and supported procedures vary.
Dealer, locksmith or roadside assistance?
There is no universally faster or cheaper option. Choose based on the vehicle’s key system, what work the provider can perform, whether service is mobile, and the total quoted cost. AAA lists key type, provider, vehicle, towing and labor as factors that can affect replacement cost. Neither AAA nor the manufacturer materials establish a universal price or turnaround. Toyota’s dealer guidance lists identification and vehicle-registration documents for lost-key requests; Ford also describes proof of identity and ownership for lost or stolen coded keys. What to gather before calling
- Vehicle year, make, model and VIN. Share the VIN directly with the dealer or provider, not in a public post.
- Photo identification and proof of ownership, such as registration, title or the documents your provider specifies.
- Any key-number tag or code you kept separately. Ford owner-manual guidance advises providing the original key-tag number if possible; Nissan’s Juke manual says its key number is needed in the stated all-keys-lost situation. - The number of keys lost and whether any working key remains.
If the key may have been stolen
Tell the dealer or locksmith that theft is possible, not just that the key is missing. Ask whether the lost electronic key can be removed from the vehicle’s authorized set and whether the physical locks need attention. Whether either step is available or appropriate depends on the vehicle. Questions to ask before approving the work
- Can you make and program a working key for this exact year, make, model and market?
- Does the quoted total include the key or fob, cutting, programming, call-out, labor and any towing?
- What identification and ownership documents must I provide?
- How soon can you do the work, and does that estimate depend on parts or equipment availability?
- If the replacement does not work, what follow-up or additional charges apply?
- If the key may have been stolen, can you disable it electronically, and should the physical locks be changed or rekeyed?
