Two-sided CNC routing succeeds when the design mirrors correctly and the workpiece returns to the same position after you flip it. A reliable way to do that is to create a two-sided job in VCarve, preserve the X and Y zero positions, and use matching holes and pins to register the stock against the spoilboard.
What makes two-sided CNC routing accurate?
When a router machines opposite faces of a board, the second face must meet the first in the intended location. That takes two kinds of alignment: mirrored geometry in the design and repeatable physical registration on the machine. If either is wrong, features can land out of position when the stock is turned over.
Randy Johnson’s WOOD Magazine tutorial uses a lidded box and its lid to demonstrate the process. The method also applies to projects such as signs, corbels, carved doors, and other work that needs coordinated machining on both sides.
Set up the two-sided job and its flip direction
In VCarve, choose the Double Sided job type to create a separate design view for each face. The software can copy shared design elements to the other side as mirrored geometry. Other design programs may offer similar functions, but their commands and workflow can differ.

Choose how the stock will be turned over: side-for-side or bottom-for-top. Either can work. Consider the board’s length and the room available on the machine; the more convenient direction is the one that lets you handle and reposition the stock without losing control of its registration.
Design features that align after the flip
Place features that must correspond on both sides, then copy them across using the software’s mirrored geometry. Check the relationship between the two views before generating toolpaths: the second face should reflect the first in the direction that matches your physical flip.

Add registration holes in areas that will not be part of the finished work. These holes will accept pins that locate the stock on the spoilboard after the flip. Keep them clear of the project’s finished surfaces and planned toolpaths.
Choose how to set Z zero
The Z-zero method depends on how closely the actual stock thickness matches the thickness in the job setup. Johnson describes two approaches:

For context, Johnson gives a 2-inch-thick board example and a nominal 3/4-inch plywood example that measures 23/32 inch actual thickness. These are instructional examples, not universal material dimensions. Pick the approach that fits your measured stock and toolpath setup.
Register the workpiece with mating holes and pins
Matching holes in the workpiece and spoilboard provide a physical reference for the second setup. Johnson reports using 3/8-inch or 1/2-inch wood dowels, and also mentions small PVC tubing or piping. Those sizes are examples; the pin diameter must fit the holes and suit your setup.

For the demonstrated job, Johnson secures the stock with beads of hotmelt glue along its edges. Screws or clamps are alternatives when appropriate for the stock, toolpath, and machine. Whichever method you use, hold the piece securely without obstructing the cutting area or registration holes.
Machine the first face, then flip and locate the stock
- Secure the stock and set the zeros. Fix the workpiece to the spoilboard. Set X, Y, and Z as required by your job and chosen Z-zero approach.
- Keep X and Y fixed. Johnson’s key rule is: “Finally, once you zero your X and Y axes, don’t change them; they must remain the same for all the toolpaths for both sides.”
- Machine the first face and its registration holes. Run the first-side toolpaths, including the holes that will locate the workpiece.
- Make matching holes in the spoilboard. Remove the stock and machine the corresponding holes into the spoilboard.
- Install the pins and flip the workpiece. Put dowels or other suitable pins into the spoilboard holes, then place the stock over them so its registration holes mate with the pins.
- Reset Z if required, then run the second-side toolpaths. If your setup uses Zero off same side, reset Z zero after flipping. Keep the original X and Y zero positions for the second-side work.
Match cutters to each operation
For the lidded-box example, Johnson uses a bowl bit to hollow the interior, a 90-degree V-groove bit for lettering, and a 1/4-inch straight bit for the exterior cutout. These are tools for those specific operations, not a universal bit list. Check that each cutter’s shank, geometry, and capacity suit your router, material, and toolpath.
