The prize recognized a coordinated, line-wide transport scheme—not a single station—designed by Grimshaw, Maynard, Equation and AtkinsRéalis. The word “flawless” comes from jury chair Muyiwa Oki’s praise of the project; it is an architectural judgment, not a claim that the railway has no operational faults.
What the Stirling Prize recognized
RIBA’s award covered the passenger-facing architecture and supporting systems of the Elizabeth Line, including platform architecture, passenger tunnels, escalators, concourses, signage, furniture, fittings, finishes and technology. The ten new stations were designed separately, so the award celebrates the coherence of the wider scheme rather than a single architect’s treatment of every station.
The line connects Reading and Heathrow with Essex and South East London. In its October 2024 announcement, RIBA described it as 62 miles of track with 26 miles of tunnels and capacity for 700,000 passengers every weekday. These are figures published with the award announcement, not independently updated current measurements. RIBA also reported that six million tonnes of excavated earth were repurposed to create a nature reserve in Essex.
How the design shapes the passenger experience
A consistent visual language
RIBA highlighted a muted palette, perforated cladding, carefully considered lighting and consistent wayfinding. Curved lines help direct movement through tunnels and platforms, while warmer and cooler lighting tones distinguish levels and junctions. Together, these choices aim to make a large, complex transport environment easier to read and calmer to move through.

Accessibility and environmental measures
RIBA cited step-free access throughout, acoustic mats concealed behind cladding to absorb excess noise, passive cooling at platform level and escalator motion sensors intended to reduce wasted energy. The design also leaves space for future air conditioning and temperature control. These are features and stated design intentions; the award announcement does not provide measured performance outcomes for them.
Why the jury called it “flawless”
RIBA President and Stirling Prize jury chair Muyiwa Oki described the Elizabeth Line as “a triumph in architect-led collaboration, offering a flawless, efficient, beautifully choreographed solution to inner-city transport.” In that context, “flawless” is the jury’s evaluative praise for the design and coordination of the transport solution, not an objective operating record.

RIBA says the Stirling Prize jury assesses design vision, innovation and originality, the ability to stimulate, engage and delight occupants and visitors, accessibility and sustainability, fitness for purpose, and client satisfaction. The 2024 shortlist also included the National Portrait Gallery and King’s Cross Masterplan.
