Choose a living wall only when you want actively growing plants and can provide the light, irrigation, drainage, wall protection and ongoing horticultural care they require. Choose manufactured green wall panels when the goal is a consistent foliage appearance without a live growing system. A third option, preserved moss or foliage, uses real botanical material but is neither alive nor artificial. Because “green wall panels” can describe any of these formats, identify the product category before comparing designs, quotes or maintenance plans.
Start by defining what “green wall panels” means
“Living wall” and “green wall” are often used as if they were interchangeable. They are not. The first decision is whether the wall will contain plants that are alive and growing, manufactured foliage, or preserved botanical material. Each category has a different building interface, operating burden and failure mode.

Living walls: live plants in a growing system
A living wall contains live plants rooted in a substrate or another growing medium. Plants may be arranged in planter boxes, felt pockets, trays or modular units. The system normally includes irrigation, a way to collect or discharge excess water, and access for inspection and plant care. The Royal Horticultural Society describes living-wall systems as commonly constructed from planter boxes or felt; it notes that irrigation and professional installation or maintenance may be needed.

Some projects use modular planted units that arrive pre-cultivated and are installed as a grid. “Modular” describes the format, not the fact that the plants are artificial: a modular system can still be a genuine living wall.

Artificial green wall panels: manufactured foliage
Artificial panels use manufactured leaves, stems and backing materials to create a foliage effect. They do not contain roots, growing medium or live plants, so they do not need horticultural watering or plant lighting. They still need an appropriate fixing method, a cleanable surface and a fire and material review suitable for the building.
Searches for “artificial greenery wall panels” generally refer to this decorative category. Treat it as a finish or feature installation, not as a planting system. It can satisfy a visual brief when live growth is not required, but it cannot deliver the operating characteristics of a living wall.
Preserved moss and foliage: real material that is no longer growing
Preserved walls use real moss, leaves or other botanical material treated to retain its appearance without active growth. The vendor comparison from Garden on the Wall presents preserved moss and foliage as a separate option that does not require live-wall watering and horticultural care. Product-specific limits still matter: ask the supplier how the material responds to humidity, direct sun, dust, cleaning and expected service life.

Which option fits your project?
The right choice follows from the outcome you need and the capacity your building can support. Use the questions below before selecting a visual style.
Choose a living wall when these conditions are true
- The brief specifically calls for live, growing plants rather than a static foliage image.
- The site can supply suitable light, whether from daylight or a designed grow-light system.
- There is a verified route for irrigation, drainage and water containment.
- The supporting wall and floor can accept the system’s loads and moisture-control details.
- Someone has responsibility for monitoring, pruning, plant replacement and fault response.
- Maintenance access can be provided without unsafe improvisation or disruptive dismantling.
Choose artificial panels when these conditions are true
- The objective is a foliage appearance, branding backdrop or decorative finish rather than plant growth.
- The project cannot reliably provide light, irrigation, drainage or regular horticultural visits.
- A consistent appearance is more important than seasonal growth and natural variation.
- The installation must avoid water near sensitive finishes, electrical equipment or occupied areas.
Choose preserved botanicals when these conditions are true
- You want genuine botanical texture without an active growing system.
- The room can meet the material’s humidity, light and temperature limits.
- You accept that preservation is a product treatment, not a guarantee of indefinite life.
If a brief says only “green wall,” have the client, designer and contractor sign off the category in writing. A quote for an artificial panel cannot be compared fairly with a quote for a planted modular system until irrigation, drainage, access and care are either included or excluded explicitly.

Building-interface requirements for a living wall
Live plants turn a decorative wall into a small building-services project. Water must reach the plants, excess water must leave the system, and the supporting construction must be protected from leaks and persistent dampness.
Water containment and drainage
LiveWall’s indoor guidance treats water containment as critical and describes rear-draining planters with a drain hose. Sempergreen describes its indoor modular system as pre-cultivated, with automated irrigation and a water-resistant rear layer. These are examples of particular manufacturers’ designs, not universal specifications. Your selected system should provide a documented drainage route, access to valves and filters, and a method for detecting or containing leaks.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteConfirm where water goes during normal irrigation, an overwatering event, a blocked drain and a power failure. Do not rely on an unsealed painted wall or an improvised tray as the only protection. Coordinate waterproofing, penetrations, floor finishes and nearby electrical equipment before the plants arrive.
Load and structural review
Plants, saturated growing media, trays, framing and retained water can weigh substantially more than an empty panel. Sempergreen lists 45 kg/m² maximum saturated weight for its SemperGreenwall Indoor product page; that is a product-specific figure, with publication year not stated, and it is not a general living-wall load allowance. Verify the current manufacturer specification and have the project’s engineer check the actual support, fixings and substrate.
Light and access
Plant selection must follow the light available at the wall, not the other way around. Assess intensity, duration, direction and seasonal change at the planting plane. Where daylight is insufficient, the design may need horticultural lighting, controls, heat management and a maintenance plan for lamp cleaning or replacement. Provide safe access to valves, emitters, sensors, drains and every planting module; an attractive wall that cannot be serviced will deteriorate quickly.

Indoor versus outdoor exposure
Indoor systems must manage water near finishes, occupants and building services. Outdoor systems also face wind, rain, freezing temperatures, ultraviolet exposure and larger seasonal swings. The same plant list, irrigation schedule or backing detail cannot be assumed to work in both settings. Ask the supplier for an application-specific assembly and installation detail.
How to plan and install a living wall
The following sequence keeps design decisions ahead of plant delivery. The exact components and commissioning steps depend on the selected system.
- Define the brief. Record whether the client requires living growth, a preserved botanical finish or artificial foliage; the wall dimensions; visual tolerances; indoor or outdoor location; and the expected completion date.
- Survey the site. Measure available light, temperature range, humidity, nearby heat sources, access constraints, floor and wall construction, drainage routes and the location of water and electrical services.
- Obtain system documentation. Request the manufacturer’s current installation detail, saturated weight, irrigation requirements, drainage method, substrate specification, plant list, warranty conditions and maintenance instructions.
- Check structure and waterproofing. Have the responsible engineer confirm the wall, framing, anchors and floor can carry the system in its wettest condition. Detail a water-resistant rear layer, edge protection and penetrations before closing the wall.
- Design irrigation and drainage. Size the supply, filtration, valves, emitters, controls and drain hose for the selected system. Include isolation points, overflow handling and access for cleaning. Never commission a wall without proving where discharge water will go.
- Plan lighting and controls. Confirm that every plant zone receives adequate light. If supplemental lighting is needed, coordinate mounting, timers, heat output, electrical protection and maintenance access.
- Install the support and containment layer. Fix the manufacturer-approved frame or carrier, install the water-resistant backing and connect drainage. Keep serviceable components reachable rather than burying them behind permanent finishes.
- Install planted modules or planters. Place modules in the documented sequence, protect stems and roots from damage, and verify that each unit is seated and restrained. Keep labels or an as-built map for future replacement.
- Commission before handover. Run the irrigation through a complete cycle, inspect every connection and drain, check for leaks, confirm controller settings, measure or verify lighting, and record the initial plant condition.
- Hand over an operating plan. Name the responsible caretaker or service provider, list inspection intervals, define escalation for leaks or plant decline, and provide seasonal instructions for the site’s climate.
Professional installation is often appropriate because a living wall combines horticulture, waterproofing, structural fixing and mechanical or electrical controls. The RHS specifically notes that living-wall systems may require professional installation and maintenance.
Watering and maintenance: why there is no universal schedule
Water demand changes with plant type, wall orientation, light intensity, maturity and average daily temperature. LiveWall’s FAQ identifies those variables for its systems. Therefore, a claim such as “water every day” or “water once a week” is not a safe specification for every living wall.
What to monitor
- Emitter or pump operation and controller settings.
- Moisture at representative modules, including the driest and wettest zones.
- Drain flow, standing water, blocked outlets and signs of leakage.
- Leaf wilt, yellowing, scorch, rot, pests and uneven growth.
- Light levels and temperature changes caused by seasons, blinds, HVAC or new furniture.
- Plant density, dead material and modules that need replacement.
Indoor care routine
Inspect the wall at a frequency appropriate to the plant mix and system instructions, then adjust irrigation from observed moisture and plant response rather than a fixed calendar alone. Clean filters and emitters as specified, keep drains clear, remove unhealthy material promptly and record changes. Any leak, unexplained pump cycling or persistent saturated area deserves immediate investigation because cosmetic symptoms can precede damage to the building fabric.

Outdoor winter preparation
In northern climates, LiveWall’s FAQ advises blowing out outdoor irrigation lines before the first hard freeze. Treat that as manufacturer guidance for LiveWall systems, not a universal date or procedure. The actual shutdown, draining and restart plan must reflect the selected components, local freeze conditions and the plant palette. Document who performs the work and how the wall is protected while irrigation is offline.
Artificial-panel care
Artificial foliage avoids live-plant watering, but it is not maintenance-free. Dust can accumulate on leaves and reduce the intended appearance; loose panels, exposed edges and failed fixings can create safety or finish problems. Follow the panel manufacturer’s cleaning method, inspect attachments after impacts or building movement, and check any fire-performance documentation required for the occupancy.
Preserved-wall care
Preserved material should be kept within the supplier’s stated environmental range. Confirm whether direct sunlight, condensation, high humidity, heating outlets or cleaning chemicals are restricted. Ask how damaged sections are replaced and whether color change is expected over time. Do not connect a preserved wall to a live-wall irrigation service.

There is no reliable generic cost winner between living walls, artificial panels and preserved botanicals in the available evidence. A meaningful comparison must define area, panel type, substrate or backing, structural support, irrigation, drainage, lighting, installation, access equipment, commissioning, plant replacement and ongoing care. The available sources do not provide an independent, comparable lifecycle price or maintenance statistic.

Common failure modes and fixes
The specification says “green wall” but the quote is ambiguous
Symptom: Drawings show foliage but do not identify whether it is planted, artificial or preserved. Fix: Add the category, product system, plant or material list, backing, load, water details and maintenance responsibility to the scope before procurement.
Plants decline soon after installation
Likely causes: insufficient or uneven light, incorrect irrigation, unsuitable temperature, blocked emitters, poor drainage or plant shock. Fix: inspect the driest and wettest zones, verify controller and pump operation, check drains and lighting, and follow the system provider’s plant-replacement and acclimatization procedure.
Water reaches the building fabric
Likely causes: an unsealed penetration, failed connection, blocked drain, overfilled tray or missing containment layer. Fix: isolate irrigation, protect nearby finishes and electrical equipment, trace the leak, repair the documented containment path and recommission under observation. Do not conceal the area until it is dry and the cause is corrected.

For artificial panels: use the approved cleaning method and refasten or replace damaged sections. For living walls: inspect plant health, light distribution, irrigation uniformity and pruning needs. For preserved walls: check environmental exposure and follow the supplier’s cleaning limits rather than applying water or household chemicals by default.
Outdoor irrigation is threatened by freezing weather
Follow the selected system’s winterization instructions. For LiveWall systems, the manufacturer FAQ advises blowing out lines before the first hard freeze in northern climates. Record the shutdown and restart procedure, and do not assume that a calendar date suitable for one region or product applies elsewhere.
A practical decision checklist
Approve the option only when the project team can answer every applicable question:
- What exactly is being installed: live, artificial or preserved?
- Does the client need plants that grow, or only a foliage appearance?
- What light reaches the wall throughout the year?
- Where does irrigation water enter, and where does discharge water leave?
- How are the supporting wall, floor and adjacent finishes protected?
- What is the maximum saturated load for this exact system, and who verified the structure?
- Who checks plants, pumps, emitters, drains, fixings or preserved material after handover?
- How will damaged plants or panels be replaced, and where are spare parts or plant records kept?
- What happens during a leak, pump failure, power outage, blocked drain or hard freeze?
- Does the quote show installation, commissioning, access, lighting, drainage and recurring care as separate line items?
The decision in one sentence
Select a living wall for a genuine horticultural installation backed by light, water management, structural capacity and committed care; select artificial green wall panels for a non-living decorative finish; and select preserved botanicals when you want real plant material without active growth. The correct choice is the one your space and operating plan can support for its entire service life, not simply the one that looks most like a garden on the day it is installed.
