The Lifeline Speedlane Swing is an optical swing-barrier turnstile designed to detect tailgating, not a device that can guarantee every unauthorized entry is prevented. Its detection uses vertical sensor sets at the front of each lane and horizontal sensor sets inside the lane. An event can trigger the standard buzzer and a passage-confirmation signal to the access-control system. Boon Edam classifies the product’s security level as “Medium – detect,” and its published material does not provide an independent detection rate, false-alarm rate or guaranteed accuracy.
For a dependable installation, specify the correct lane width and throughput for your region, define what happens during power loss or a fire alarm, integrate the readers and access-control panel, and commission the sensors with realistic user flows. The steps below show how to do that without treating a nominal product feature as proof of site-wide security performance.

How the Lifeline Speedlane Swing identifies tailgating
The Speedlane Swing combines glass swinging barriers with approach detection, user guidance and optical sensing. When an authorized person presents a credential, the access-control system permits a passage. Sensors then monitor movement through the lane. Boon Edam’s US product information and brochure describe two sensor arrangements:
- Vertical sensor sets at the lane entrance: these detect people approaching and entering the passage area.
- Horizontal sensor sets along the lane interior: these monitor occupancy and movement after the first person has entered.
If a second person follows without a separate authorization, the system is designed to identify the additional movement and provide an audible warning through its standard buzzer. It also sends a passage-confirmation signal to the access-control system after an authorized user passes. Exact alarm logic, timing and output mapping must be confirmed with the integrator for the selected controller and software; the public product pages do not publish a universal detection threshold.

This arrangement supports sensor-based tailgating detection, but “accurate” must be used carefully. The manufacturer does not publish a measured percentage of attempts detected, a false-alarm rate, an independent laboratory test or a guarantee that every tailgating event will be detected. The global product page’s “Medium – detect” classification means the system is intended to detect and signal events. It should not be described as complete tailgating prevention.
Conditions such as walking speed, two people entering side by side, a person carrying a child or large object, unusual lighting or reflections, lane alignment and the access-control configuration can affect how an event is interpreted. Your acceptance test should therefore use the actual lane, readers, credentials and operating procedures rather than relying on a generic accuracy claim.

Choose throughput from the real access-control sequence
A lane’s headline capacity is not the same as the number of people your building will process in practice. The global page gives 20–30 people per minute and explicitly ties throughput to the access-control system; the US page gives 25–30 people per minute in one direction. Reader response time, credential verification, door-held-open settings, anti-passback rules and whether every person must stop can reduce the effective rate.
Questions for the traffic calculation
- Is the stated flow one direction only, or will people enter and exit through the same bank?
- Does every user present a card, mobile credential, biometric or facial-recognition identity?
- Will visitors, contractors or accessibility users require staff assistance?
- How many lanes remain available during maintenance or a fault?
- What peak five-minute arrival rate must the lobby absorb?
Have the integrator model the busiest arrival period with your selected reader and controller. Preserve the applicable regional rating in the project documents instead of averaging the two published figures.
Set the security objective before selecting options
The base product is positioned as a medium-security optical speed gate. That is appropriate when the objective is controlled flow with detection and an alarm, rather than a physically impenetrable portal. Boon Edam lists optional security level-ups on its global page, including extra jump-over detection, a sound module and Tailgate+. Confirm whether each option is available in your region and supported by the chosen control system.
The US material distinguishes deterrence, detection and prevention. If your threat assessment requires a higher level than detection, Boon Edam points buyers toward a Tourlock 180 or a one-person portal for specific use cases. Those are different operating concepts: they can reduce the opportunity for a second person to enter, but may also reduce throughput, require more space or change evacuation planning. Compare alternatives against the threat, acceptable false alarms, accessibility, lane capacity, integration and lifecycle support rather than selecting solely by product name.

| Project requirement | Specification decision |
|---|---|
| Detect a second person while preserving fast lobby flow | Use the Speedlane Swing with correctly configured optical sensing, alarms and access-control signaling. |
| Discourage climbing or jumping over the barrier | Evaluate the higher barrier option and the additional jump-over detection package. |
| Physically enforce one-person entry | Assess a one-person portal or another prevention-oriented design; expect different throughput and egress requirements. |
| Provide an accessible lane | Specify the 915 mm passage option and verify the complete route, not just the gate opening. |
Safety, emergency egress and accessibility are site decisions
The US product information describes fail-safe operation during a power outage, a dedicated fire-alarm connection and low-object detection that keeps the barriers open. It also says emergency settings depend on local regulations and/or the customer’s request. Those statements do not determine the correct behavior for your building. The installer, fire-protection designer and authority having jurisdiction must approve the fail-safe direction, fire-alarm interface, reset procedure and any requirements for a continuously available exit route.
Confirm these items in the life-safety design
- What happens to each barrier when normal power is lost?
- Does a fire alarm command open all lanes, selected lanes or an adjacent access gate?
- Can occupants exit without presenting a credential?
- How are alarms silenced, acknowledged and reset after an evacuation?
- Are the lane, queue rails and approach areas clear for mobility devices and emergency responders?
The 915 mm passage is described as suitable for disabled access, and the brochure lists a Winglock Swing access-gate option with a 915 mm passage. A nominal clear width is not proof of accessibility compliance. Check local rules for clear opening, approach and turning space, floor transitions, handrails, detectable hazards and the route beyond the turnstile.

Boon Edam says dry contacts support virtually any access-control device and gives a reader-mount envelope of 55 × 130 × 50 mm. That is a connection method and physical envelope, not a certification that every reader will work. Require a coordinated submittal showing the lane, reader, controller, network, fire-alarm and power interfaces.
- Survey the location. Record finished dimensions, floor level, wall and ceiling conditions, delivery path, service clearances, queue space and the direction of normal and emergency travel.
- Select the lane configuration. Choose single or multi-lane layout, 500 mm, 615 mm or 915 mm passage where offered, barrier height and any adjacent Winglock Swing gate.
- Map the access-control sequence. Document credential presentation, authorization, barrier opening, passage confirmation, timeout, forced passage and tailgating alarm outputs.
- Coordinate readers and accessories. Boon Edam identifies Lifeline Boost, BoonTouch, facial-recognition integration and universal elevator destination displays as options. Verify regional availability, mounting, power and software compatibility.
- Wire life-safety interfaces. Provide the dedicated fire-alarm connection, emergency release logic and any required local override. Obtain written approval from the responsible fire and building-code professionals.
- Install and align the lanes. Follow the current manufacturer installation instructions, protect the optical paths from construction dust and verify that barriers, sensors and low-object detection are not obstructed.
- Commission with the access-control vendor. Test valid, invalid, duplicate and expired credentials; tailgating attempts; held barriers; power loss; fire alarm; emergency release; and recovery after each event.
- Hand over records. Provide as-built dimensions, wiring diagrams, firmware and controller settings, test results, maintenance contacts, spare-parts information and the approved emergency procedure.
How to verify detection during commissioning
Use a controlled test plan instead of asking an installer to demonstrate one convenient walk-through. Record the lane, software version, credential type, sensor settings, weather or lobby conditions and the result of every scenario.

- One authorized person enters at normal walking speed.
- A second person follows closely at several separations, including the closest expected real-world spacing.
- Two people approach side by side, where the lane width permits it.
- A person stops, reverses or turns around inside the lane.
- A user carries luggage, a box or a child, while a separate observer confirms that low-object behavior is safe.
- An invalid or unrecognized credential is presented.
- The barrier is held open, power is removed and the fire-alarm input is activated, each with the approved safety procedure.
For each test, verify the audible indication, access-control event, security console record, barrier movement and reset behavior. Treat results as commissioning evidence for that installation, not as a universal accuracy percentage for every Speedlane Swing.
Maintenance, service and lifecycle expectations
Boon Edam describes preventative maintenance, parts support and service options. Its global page states a manufacturer-reported mean cycles before failure (MCBF) of 5 million cycles without service and 10 million cycles with service. MCBF is a lifecycle figure, not a promise that every installation will reach that count; traffic pattern, cleaning, alignment, environment, vandalism and service quality matter.
Put the lane on a documented maintenance schedule. Inspect glass and barriers, clean sensor windows with approved materials, check reader mounts and cable strain, exercise emergency release, review alarm logs and confirm that fire-alarm and power-fail behavior still match the approved design. Keep critical spare parts and define response times for a failed lane, especially where a single lane serves an occupied building.
Questions to put in the purchase specification
- Which regional product page and drawing govern the quoted dimensions and throughput?
- What exact tailgating sensor package, sound module and jump-over detection options are included?
- Which access-control protocols, dry contacts and passage-confirmation signals are supported?
- What reader dimensions, power supplies and network connections are required?
- How will the lane behave on power loss, fire alarm, emergency release and controller failure?
- What accessibility clear width and adjacent route will be delivered?
- What commissioning tests, training, warranty, preventative maintenance and spare-parts support are included?
Answering these questions turns a general product description into a verifiable security installation. The Lifeline Speedlane Swing can provide practical, sensor-based tailgating detection when its configuration, access-control logic and safety interfaces are engineered for the site; its published “Medium – detect” classification and lack of independent accuracy statistics mean the project should not promise complete prevention or a universal detection rate.
