LG’s Rolling Bot: The 2016 Home-Monitoring Robot That Teased Cats

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

LG’s Rolling Bot was a real spherical robot prototype shown in 2016, but the available reporting does not establish that it reached ordinary retail sale. Contemporary coverage described a Wi‑Fi-connected camera you could steer around the home, talk through remotely, use to control some infrared appliances, and switch into a laser-based pet mode. No confirmed launch date, price, or current support information is established in that coverage.

What was LG’s Rolling Bot?

LG presented the Rolling Bot during the 2016 LG G5 launch period, alongside the phone’s “Friends” accessories. It was a compact rolling ball, described at the time as slightly larger than a softball, designed as a remotely controlled home-monitoring and companion device—not a robotic vacuum. Its BB‑8-like appearance was a visual comparison, not a technical description. Droid Life’s February 21, 2016 report called the displayed unit a rough prototype and said LG had not announced when it would be available.

What could the Rolling Bot do?

Move a camera around the home

Reports described a Wi‑Fi connection, smartphone-app control, and an embedded 8-megapixel camera for viewing images and video remotely while driving the robot. That made it more mobile than a fixed camera in concept, but contemporary reporting does not establish recording retention, cloud storage, night vision, image quality, encryption, or a finished production app. A camera and remote movement alone do not establish the detection, alarms, evidence retention, or dependable autonomous patrol expected of a security system.

Support remote voice interaction

The Rolling Bot was reported to have onboard microphones and two-way interaction, allowing an owner to speak remotely to a person or pet. The available reports do not specify speaker quality, range, echo handling, or whether audio was recorded.

  • Dual use dry and wet vacuum cleaner roller brush: Suitable for both dry and wet vacuum cleaners, it can be used in both dry and wet environments to dry dust and hair.
  • Roller brush filter: easy to install without tools, can be easily disassembled and replaced without the need for additional tools, and can be replaced in just a few minutes.
  • Household roller brush: high-density filter, effectively intercepting debris, pet hair, and blocking small particles.
  • Replacement parts for dry and wet vacuum cleaners: Replace with spare parts and regularly replace parts to maintain the suction power of the vacuum cleaner.
  • Replacement parts for roller brush filter: Suitable for both dry and wet vacuum cleaners, can be used in both dry and wet environments, capable of dry suction of dust, hair, and wet suction of sewage stains.

Control some infrared appliances

An onboard IR blaster was reported as a way to control appliances with infrared receivers, such as televisions. IR control depends on compatible device codes and typically requires a usable line of sight; coverage does not identify supported brands or establish integration with modern cloud-connected devices, locks, alarms, or thermostats.

Attract a pet with a laser

The pet mode reportedly used movement and a laser pointer to attract or tease animals. “Cat torturing” in the original headline was provocative humor, not a report of physical harm. As a practical animal-safety matter—not a documented LG warning—never aim a laser into an animal’s eyes. Chasing a light may frustrate or overstimulate some pets and is not a substitute for a physical toy, treats, or interactive play with a person. Supervise an animal that is unfamiliar with a moving robot or seems distressed or fixated.

  • Reduce motor load loss: Replacing the side brushes of the robotic vacuum can alleviate the motor's burden and extend the overall lifespan of the machine
  • Prevent bearing blockage: Dust and hair accumulated over time may get into the side brush bearings; replacing them with new side brushes can prevent bearing damage
  • Maintain machine stability: Worn side brushes may cause the robotic vacuum's center of gravity to shift; replacing the side brushes can help the machine run more smoothly

Was the Rolling Bot ever released?

The strongest contemporary account describes a rough prototype and says LG had not disclosed a release date. The reviewed reporting does not confirm a broad consumer launch, retail price, supported app, warranty, or present-day availability. The careful verdict is that LG showed the Rolling Bot as a prototype in 2016, but its release as a normal consumer product is unverified; there is not enough evidence to say LG discontinued a product that had first gone on sale.

What would have mattered in everyday use?

The concept’s usefulness depended on more than the robot itself: a working phone app, home Wi‑Fi, a charged battery, a navigable floor, and compatible appliances for IR control. The reports do not answer whether it could cross rugs or thresholds, avoid furniture, recover when trapped, return to a charging dock, or be driven from outside the home rather than only on the local network. Lost Wi‑Fi, a frozen camera feed, low battery, or a robot pushed under furniture would all be practical evaluation points, not documented prototype failures.

Privacy would also have needed clear answers before relying on a mobile camera and microphone: where video went, whether it was stored locally or in the cloud, how remote access was protected, who in a household could view it, and whether recording indicators or audio retention controls existed. No final manual or retail support documentation in the available coverage settles those questions. A movable camera can also be steered into more private spaces than a fixed one, making account security and household consent important considerations.

How does it compare with LG’s later home robots?

LG’s later announcements describe different designs and ambitions; they do not show that the Rolling Bot evolved into a retail product.

Robot What LG described How it differs from the Rolling Bot
2024 smart-home AI agent LG described a two-legged-wheel robot with voice and image recognition, connected-home control, environmental sensors for temperature, humidity, and air quality, plus pet-monitoring and security-patrol functions. LG’s 2024 announcement A room-to-room smart-home agent concept, rather than a spherical manually driven camera prototype.
2026 CLOiD LG described a wheeled base with a head-mounted camera, display, speaker, and sensors; two articulated arms with seven degrees of freedom each; and five independently actuated fingers per hand. Demonstrations included household tasks such as retrieving food, using an oven, laundry, and folding clothes, with integration into ThinQ. LG’s CLOiD announcement A substantially different household-task robot with arms, not a mobile surveillance and pet-entertainment ball.

What the Rolling Bot’s story tells us

The Rolling Bot combined several appealing ideas—mobile home viewing, remote conversation, pet interaction, and limited appliance control—in a memorable form. But its prototype status leaves the product questions that determine daily usefulness unanswered: navigation, battery and charging, privacy and security, software support, and compatibility. It is best understood as a genuine 2016 demonstration of LG’s home-robot ambitions, not as a currently purchasable LG device.
