Yes, the announcement was real—but “all” meant iRobot’s Wi‑Fi-connected models in that 2017 product generation, not every Roomba ever made. Droid Life reported on May 17, 2017 that the Roomba 980, 960, 690 and soon-to-be-released 890 could work with Google Home and Google Assistant. The initial commands were simple: start cleaning, stop cleaning and return to the Home Base. Today, compatibility depends on the robot’s exact model, Wi‑Fi hardware, iRobot app, firmware and the commands that model supports.
What the 2017 announcement actually covered
The original news report described iRobot’s connected Roomba lineup, specifically naming the Roomba 980, 960, 690 and 890 (the 890 was described as soon to be released). A user could ask Google Assistant to start the Roomba, stop it or send it back to its dock. Read the period report at Droid Life.

That list is historical, not a current compatibility catalog. The important qualification was “connected”: the robot needed built-in Wi‑Fi and support in iRobot’s online software service.
Does Google Home control every Roomba?
No. Non-Wi‑Fi Roombas cannot use cloud-based Google Assistant control. iRobot’s Wi‑Fi guidance shows that model families differ: some support 2.4 GHz only, some support both 2.4 and 5 GHz, and some models have no Wi‑Fi capability at all. Check the exact model in iRobot’s Wi‑Fi compatibility table.

- The robot must be Wi‑Fi-capable and online in an iRobot account.
- The model must be supported by iRobot’s current voice-assistant integration.
- Google Assistant availability can vary by country, account and service changes.
- Advanced functions such as room cleaning are limited to models with the necessary mapping features.
Which iRobot app do you need now?
iRobot has two app tracks. Classic Wi‑Fi-connected models generally use the iRobot HOME app. Newer models—including Roomba 105, 205, 405, 505, 705 and later families—use the Roomba Home app. The robot and its app should be updated before linking Google Assistant. iRobot’s current compatibility guidance is at its Google Assistant command page and its compatibility reference.
How to link a compatible Roomba to Google Home
Prepare the robot and network
- Confirm the exact model has Wi‑Fi and supports the required network band.
- Set up the robot in the applicable iRobot app and sign in to a current iRobot account.
- Install available robot and app updates.
- Have a Google Home or Nest device, or another Google Assistant-enabled control surface, signed in to the Google account used for your home.
Some models require 2.4 GHz Wi‑Fi during setup; others support 5 GHz as well. The detailed model table is published by iRobot.

Start from the iRobot app
In iRobot’s documented flow, open Menu → Smart Home → Voice Assistants → Google Assistant, then follow the authorization prompts. The robot should already be registered and online in the app. See iRobot’s setup instructions.

Older iRobot instructions use this path: Google Home app → Menu → Home control → + → Set up device → Have something already set up? → search “iRobot” → iRobot Smart Home → sign in. Google’s current third-party-device guidance uses Add → Device, so labels may differ by app version. Follow the current labels in Google’s instructions at support.google.com/googlehome.

- CLEAN FLOORS EVERY DAY—WITHOUT THINKING ABOUT IT. The Roomba Plus 415X vacuums and mops in one run, stopping crumbs, dust, and spills before they turn into stuck‑on messes. With 20,000 Pa and DualClean mop pads, your floors stay visibly clean from morning and night.
- NO MORE SCRUBBING DRIED‑ON MESSES. SmartScrub applies extra pressure exactly where messes are stubborn—breaking down dried food, muddy paw prints, and kitchen splatter, so you never have to scrub by hand again.
- REACHES THE PLACES DIRT USUALLY HIDES. A 46% slimmer design* fits under more furniture, while extending brushes pull debris from edges and corners—so dust doesn’t collect where traditional robots miss. *Compared to Roomba 105
- GREAT FOR HOMES WITH PETS. Tangle‑free rubber brushes capture pet fur without clogging, eliminating constant stops to cut hair off the brush.
- EVERY CLEAN STARTS WITH A FRESH MOP—NOT YESTERDAY’S DIRT. The AutoWash Dock washes and heat‑dries mop pads at 113°F after every run, preventing odors and buildup so floors aren’t cleaned with yesterday’s dirt.
Room, zone, favorite and object cleaning
Mapping-capable models may support commands such as “Hey Google, clean my kitchen,” “start vacuuming the [zone],” or “start cleaning the [favorite].” Selected Combo and newer models may also accept an object-based mopping command, such as “start mopping under the table.” These are not universal Roomba features; iRobot limits them to specified i, j, s, Combo, m-series and newer models. A completed map and matching room or zone names are required.

Multiple robots
When more than one Roomba or Braava is linked, name the robot explicitly: “Hey Google, tell [robot name] to start cleaning.” iRobot recommends short names without numbers, special characters or emojis; its naming guidance appears in the setup article and the command reference.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What Google Assistant cannot guarantee
- A non-Wi‑Fi Roomba cannot be added to the cloud service.
- A connected model may support start and dock commands without room-by-room cleaning.
- Room or zone commands fail when mapping is incomplete, room names do not match, or the model lacks smart mapping.
- Combo mop commands may require a fitted water tank and mop pad, plus a mission type the model recognizes.
- Google Assistant depends on account linking and internet services; the iRobot app remains the deeper interface for maps, schedules, preferences, maintenance and diagnostics.
Troubleshooting by symptom
| Problem | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Robot is missing from Google Home | Account, link or synchronization problem | Confirm the robot is online in the iRobot app, verify the same iRobot account, relink the service, then use Google Home’s device-sync function. Google’s troubleshooting steps are at Google Support. |
| Assistant misunderstands the command | Ambiguous robot name or wording | Choose a short distinctive name, remove punctuation and say “tell [robot name] to …”. Use “vacuum,” “mop” or “clean” according to the supported mission. |
| Room command is unavailable | No completed map, mismatched room name or unsupported model | Finish mapping, use the exact map label and verify that the model supports room-level control. Try whole-home cleaning to separate mapping issues from account issues. |
| Wi‑Fi setup cannot find the network | Unsupported band or difficult network credentials | Use the band specified for the model (often 2.4 GHz), connect the phone to that network during setup, enable requested Bluetooth and location permissions, keep the robot near the router and simplify unusual network names or passwords if necessary. |
| Mop command fails | Missing tank or pad, or unsupported mission | Install the required accessories and use wording supported by that Combo model. |
Google Home versus the iRobot app
| Option | Best use | Limitation |
|---|---|---|
| iRobot HOME or Roomba Home | Setup, maps, schedules, cleaning preferences, updates and diagnostics | Requires an iRobot account and app-supported cloud service |
| Google Home and Assistant | Hands-free start, pause, dock, locate, status and selected room or zone commands | Feature depth varies by model and depends on account linking |
| Manual robot controls | Basic operation when voice or cloud services are unavailable | Limited compared with app-based controls |
Amazon Alexa is another officially documented voice platform for compatible iRobot robots; see iRobot’s Alexa support page. Do not assume identical commands or feature coverage between platforms.
What to check before buying
- Exact model number and Wi‑Fi band support.
- Whether it uses iRobot HOME or Roomba Home.
- Smart mapping and room or zone command support.
- Vacuum-only versus Combo mopping functions.
- Dock, consumables and navigation features independent of voice control.
- Whether you already use Google Assistant hardware and accept cloud-based account linking.
