The LG refrigerator compressor lawsuit concerns allegations that some refrigerators with linear compressors can fail prematurely and stop cooling. The claims are not proof that every LG refrigerator has a defective compressor: the U.S. and Canadian settlements applied to defined groups, and the allegations were not established as engineering findings or court determinations.
What the lawsuit alleges about LG linear compressors
A compressor circulates refrigerant through a refrigerator’s sealed cooling system. In a 2019 California complaint, plaintiffs alleged that failures involving certain LG linear compressors could leave refrigerators unable to cool properly. The complaint also alleged that corrosion or pitting in evaporator tubing could create pinhole leaks, allow air into the system, and put additional stress on the compressor. Those are plaintiffs’ allegations, not independently established facts about the cause or frequency of failures. 2019 complaint

The reported consumer-facing problem is a refrigerator that no longer maintains expected temperatures, putting food and other perishables at risk. But a fridge that stops cooling does not, by itself, confirm compressor failure. The cause may require diagnosis by a qualified technician.
Which settlements covered LG refrigerators?
The settlements concerned specific claims and eligible groups. They do not establish a universal defect across LG’s refrigerator range.

| United States | A settlement announced in 2020 covered certain LG models manufactured from January 1, 2014, through December 31, 2017. It resolved claims related to compressor-associated no-cooling events and warranty or repair service. LG denied the allegations and agreed to settle to avoid further litigation costs. The announcement also described enhanced customer-care and service measures. Check the official model list and terms; not every LG refrigerator was included. U.S. settlement information |
| Canada | In Prins v. LG Electronics Canada, Inc., the Ontario Superior Court of Justice approved a settlement on May 27, 2024. The notice described potential benefits for certain covered models and qualifying no-cooling events, and said the allegations had not been proven. The claim deadline was October 25, 2024; class counsel says the action is concluded and no further claims are being accepted. Canadian settlement notice Class counsel’s page |
These settlement programs had different eligibility rules and claim windows. A model name alone may not establish eligibility: consult the applicable official terms for the country, model, relevant dates, and qualifying event.
Are there later U.S. allegations?
ClassAction.org’s page, marked updated February 18, 2026, says its attorney investigation into later complaints is complete. Its account describes allegations and consumer reports; it does not establish a general court finding that all LG refrigerators have the alleged defect. An investigation, an arbitration claim, and a settled class action are different legal matters. ClassAction.org’s page

What to do if your LG refrigerator stops cooling
Protect perishables and document the problem
- Treat a no-cooling problem as urgent if food or medicine is at risk. A thermometer can help monitor temperature, but it cannot diagnose or repair the refrigerator.
- Record the exact model and serial numbers, purchase date, symptoms, error codes, service visits, repair invoices, and documentation of any losses.
- Contact LG or a qualified appliance repair provider and ask for a diagnosis, plus confirmation of parts coverage, labor coverage, and service terms for your specific model and location.
Do not assume an error code proves compressor failure
LG’s official guidance says the ER(E) CF code is associated with the mechanical-compartment fan motor; wiring or a main-board issue may also cause it. If the code recurs, LG recommends inspection by a technician. The code and a no-cooling symptom are not, on their own, proof that the compressor has failed. LG error-code troubleshooting
Check coverage and repairs by exact model
- Compare the model and relevant dates against the official settlement terms before assuming the refrigerator qualified. The U.S. and Canadian programs used different covered groups and dates, and the Canadian claims period has closed.
- Warranty terms vary by model and geography; coverage for an individual unit cannot be determined from the lawsuit alone. Confirm current terms directly with LG or the service provider.
- If a compressor replacement is recommended, have a technician confirm the diagnosis and verify that the part is compatible with the precise model. The complaint and settlement materials do not identify one compressor part that fits all LG refrigerators. Sealed-system work is appropriate for a qualified technician.
What the lawsuit does—and does not—tell owners
The litigation explains why some owners pursued claims over alleged linear-compressor and cooling-system failures. It does not show that every LG refrigerator has the same defect, diagnose an individual unit, or determine that a particular owner has warranty or settlement rights. For a specific refrigerator, the useful next steps are to identify its exact model, check the relevant official terms, and obtain a confirmed technical diagnosis.
