LG’s offer is best understood as a combination of equipment (especially air-conditioning), controls and protocol gateways, software interfaces such as the ThinQ Business API, and local partners that design, install and support the system.
Two integration routes must be kept separate. The ThinQ Business API lets a corporate partner’s application interact with supported LG products. An LG BMS gateway connects LG air-conditioning equipment to an existing building-management system through protocols such as BACnet, Modbus or LonWorks. They can appear in the same project, but they solve different integration problems.

What an LG building ecosystem actually is
LG describes its business portfolio as configurable solutions that can combine HVAC, commercial displays, built-in home appliances and accompanying software for different verticals and space requirements. That is a portfolio strategy, not proof that every LG product will interoperate automatically or that LG supplies a single operating system for an entire building.

In practice, the ecosystem has four layers. A project may use all four or only the layers that fit its building.

The boundary between the layers matters. A property-management application does not become a BACnet client merely because it uses the ThinQ Business API, and a BMS gateway does not automatically provide the application features exposed by an API.
The two integration paths: API versus BMS gateway
Start a design by deciding whether the requirement is application integration, building-control integration, or both.

LG’s Spanish corporate announcement of December 17, 2024 describes the ThinQ Business API as a route for corporate partners operating office or residential buildings. The examples are operational: a building’s existing app could let occupants reserve shared LG laundry-room washers and dryers, while LG temperature and humidity sensors could feed alerts when conditions look abnormal.

The same announcement says Home Assistant users can connect and control more than 26 types of LG AI appliances through the ThinQ API example. It also describes Homey as connecting more than 50,000 types of appliances and IoT devices and offering about 1,000 apps. Those figures describe the Home Assistant and Homey ecosystems cited by LG; they are not counts of LG building deployments, supported gateway models or measured project outcomes.

The BMS route is different. LG’s BMS gateway page, published on an LG Electronics Iran site without a stated publication date, names BACnet, Modbus and LonWorks as the protocols used to connect LG air-conditioning to existing building systems. It also says ACP control can continue during a BMS fault. That is a resilience behavior for the documented control arrangement, not a promise that every HVAC generation or every BMS implementation will behave identically.
How to use the ThinQ Business API in a building project
The API is most useful when a building already has a resident, workplace or property-management application and wants LG equipment to appear inside that experience. Treat it as a partner-development project, not as a plug-in activated from a consumer app.
- Define the workflow. Write down the action the application must perform: for example, reserve a shared washer or dryer, read a temperature or humidity value, or issue an abnormal-condition alert. Separate occupant functions from facilities functions so permissions and notifications are clear.
- Inventory the LG products. Record the exact appliance or sensor families, quantities, locations and ownership model. The number of product types supported in a public example is not a substitute for checking the products specified for your building.
- Confirm partner access and regional terms with LG. The 2024 announcement concerns corporate partners and a Spanish market context. Obtain the current onboarding, authentication, endpoint, data-retention and support requirements for the country and business unit in which the project will operate.
- Map application actions to building policies. A laundry reservation needs rules for availability, cancellation, user identity and dispute handling. A sensor alert needs thresholds, recipients, escalation and a plan for a failed or offline sensor. These policies belong in the host application even when LG supplies the device data.
- Test failure and recovery paths. Verify what the app shows when a device is offline, a request is rejected or connectivity is interrupted. Do not represent a stale sensor value as current occupancy or environmental data.
- Commission with the integrator. Validate every mapped product and workflow in the installed building, then document credentials, ownership, logging, update procedures and the party responsible for first-line support.
LG’s public material does not provide a complete model-by-model compatibility matrix or a universal API implementation recipe. The partner and integrator should therefore confirm supported product families, rate limits, permissions, regional availability and lifecycle policy before a contract or construction specification is finalized.

An HVAC gateway is appropriate when the building already operates a BMS and the project needs LG air-conditioning data or commands within that control environment. The gateway translates between the LG equipment side and the building protocol side; it does not remove the need for a correctly designed HVAC network, addressing plan and commissioning process.

- Survey the installed controls. Identify the BMS manufacturer, protocol actually enabled at the site, network topology, controllers and points required by the facility team. BACnet, Modbus and LonWorks are named by LG, but protocol support alone does not establish compatibility with a particular version or controller.
- Identify the LG HVAC family and local controller. Record the outdoor and indoor units, central controllers and ACP arrangement. Ask LG or the authorized HVAC partner which gateway model and firmware support that exact equipment generation.
- Define the point list. Agree which temperatures, operating modes, alarms, schedules and energy-related values are to be exposed to the BMS. Only include points that the selected LG equipment and gateway can provide and control.
- Design network and responsibility boundaries. Decide who owns IP or field-bus addressing, segmentation, cybersecurity controls, backups and change approval. A gateway installation should not create an undocumented route into the building network.
- Commission normal operation. Test commands and feedback from the BMS, local LG controls and any supervisory controller. Check that displayed states match the physical equipment and that alarms reach the intended operator.
- Test the failure mode. Disconnect or simulate a BMS-side fault under controlled conditions. LG’s page says ACP control can continue during a BMS fault; verify how that behavior appears at this site, who is allowed to use ACP controls, and how the BMS is resynchronized after communications return.
The gateway page does not identify exact models, supported HVAC generations, configuration requirements or regional sales availability. Those items must be confirmed in writing before procurement. A protocol name is an integration starting point, not a universal-compatibility guarantee.
Where displays and appliances belong
HVAC is the clearest building-infrastructure use case because LG documents a dedicated BMS gateway for air-conditioning. LG’s global business overview also presents a broader B2B mix in which HVAC, commercial displays, built-in home appliances and software can be configured for sectors such as offices, residences and other specialized spaces.
That broader mix can support a coordinated specification—for example, comfort systems for the building, displays for shared areas and built-in appliances for resident amenities. It should not be read as independent evidence that one project will obtain a common data model, one dashboard or one commissioning process across all categories. Each product line may have its own controller, API, installer qualifications and service path.
Partners are part of the system
A building ecosystem is delivered through a chain of responsibilities. LG’s U.S. channel material refers to resellers, systems integrators and enterprise partners. Separate HVAC partner and system-integrator routes serve mechanical and controls work, while LG PRO is cited for U.S. commercial-display and IT channel activity. Do not assume that a display or IT partner is qualified to specify, install or commission an HVAC gateway.

In a June 10, 2026 LG Electronics USA release about expansion of the LG PRO channel program, JB Kim, head of B2B channel sales, said: “Our partners consistently tell us they want faster access to information, simplified processes and tools that help them conduct business easily and effectively.” The statement concerns partner enablement and the LG PRO platform; it is not a claim about HVAC efficiency, BMS uptime or interoperability.
For a construction project, assign these responsibilities explicitly:
- Design authority: sets the HVAC sequence, BMS points, application workflows and acceptance criteria.
- LG or authorized HVAC partner: confirms equipment, gateway selection, controls architecture and product support.
- Systems integrator: implements the BMS or application connection, network configuration, alarms and documentation.
- Electrical and mechanical trades: install power, cabling, equipment and field devices to the approved design.
- Owner or facilities team: accepts operating procedures, access rights, maintenance responsibilities and escalation paths.
Decisions to settle before specifying equipment

Common pitfalls and practical fixes
Assuming one LG login controls the building
ThinQ Business API access, HVAC gateway controls and product-specific local controllers are different layers. Draw separate trust boundaries and document which system is authoritative for each function.

BACnet, Modbus or LonWorks support does not identify the compatible LG HVAC generation, firmware or regional SKU. Require a model-level confirmation from LG or the authorized integrator before ordering.

Mixing regional program claims
The cited materials cover a Spanish corporate announcement, an Iranian gateway page and a U.S. channel release. Their product scope and commercial terms should not be generalized worldwide. Confirm local availability, warranty, training and service contacts for the project address.
Treating ecosystem breadth as measured performance
The appliance and app counts in LG’s 2024 announcement illustrate the reach of Home Assistant and Homey integrations. They do not establish energy savings, uptime, payback, installed-building counts or HVAC performance.
Leaving handover undocumented
A functioning demonstration is not enough. Deliver the point list, network diagram, credentials custody, alarm routing, failure behavior, reset procedure, firmware policy and contact list so the owner can operate the system after the construction team leaves.
A sensible specification sequence
For most projects, begin with the building’s outcomes rather than a product catalogue. Define comfort, amenity and monitoring requirements; determine which functions belong in the BMS and which belong in an occupant or property application; inventory existing infrastructure; then ask LG and the appointed integrator for model-level compatibility and regional supply confirmation. Commission each layer independently before testing the end-to-end workflow.
This approach preserves the value of LG’s ecosystem without overstating it. LG can provide equipment, a documented HVAC gateway path, an application API and partner channels, but the final building system still depends on correct engineering, compatible models, protocol configuration, commissioning and local lifecycle support.
