1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA practical question—where can a traveling or working parent safely pump?—led to a collaboration among Mamava, Konrad Prefab and ALPOLIC. Mamava supplied the user problem and product concept, Konrad Prefab translated it into a manufacturable prefabricated suite, and ALPOLIC composite materials formed the enclosure. A September 15, 2017 account in Building Design + Construction, written by ALPOLIC, reported nearly 300 units deployed across the United States at the time. That article presents the pod as a way to make breastfeeding support visible in public and workplace settings; it is a vendor-authored historical account, not an independent performance evaluation or a current product catalog.
The need that started the project
Mamava founders Sascha Mayer and Christine Dodson developed the mobile lactation-unit concept after experiencing the difficulty of finding safe, comfortable places to pump while traveling without their nursing infants. The problem was not simply a shortage of chairs or electrical outlets. A parent needed privacy, a hygienic environment and a space that could be located in an airport, office or other busy building without a major construction project.

Mayer described the original design goal as an affordable, easy-to-place and easy-to-clean solution that would provide safety and privacy. That combination shaped the project more than an architectural brief would have. The unit had to work for a person using it alone, fit into facilities with different layouts, and be repeatable enough to manufacture rather than built as a one-off room.
Why a mobile suite was a different answer
A conventional lactation room generally depends on a building owner identifying permanent floor area, hiring trades and coordinating work around an operating facility. Mamava’s concept treated the need as a deployable product: a self-contained suite that could be positioned where demand existed and moved or added as a site changed. The approach did not eliminate planning, electrical or accessibility responsibilities, but it changed the starting point from “Where can we build a room?” to “Where can a finished or nearly finished unit be placed?”

How the three partners divided the work
| Partner | Role described in the 2017 account | What that role contributed |
|---|---|---|
| Mamava | Founded by Sascha Mayer and Christine Dodson; originated the mobile lactation-unit concept. | User-centered requirements for privacy, safety, affordability, placement and cleaning. |
| Konrad Prefab | Specialist in prefabricated architectural environments; manufactured the units at its Springfield, Vermont facility. | Design development, fabrication, sectioned shipping and on-site assembly instructions. |
| ALPOLIC | Supplier of composite materials selected by Konrad Prefab owner David Jaacks. | Timber-series wood-grain finish and Graphic-AL composite used for the suite body, with printing available for customization. |
The sequence matters. The source says Konrad Prefab partnered with Mamava before the sleek, modern shape was settled. In other words, the appearance was the result of a manufacturing partnership, not a cosmetic treatment added after the fact. Mamava brought a specific human need; Konrad Prefab considered how to produce and install a repeatable environment; and the material selection supported the enclosure that emerged from that process.
Why Konrad Prefab selected ALPOLIC
David Jaacks, identified in the article as owner of Konrad Prefab, explained his material choice this way: “When Mamava and I talked through the concept and settled on a design, I chose ALPOLIC® because it’s easy to work with, durable, yet lightweight and flexible,”
He added: “We could also print on it to customize the unit for the buyer, so it was all the things we really needed.”

For a facilities team, the practical implications are clear: a cladding system that can be fabricated into a consistent shape, handled without excessive weight and finished for different buyers can help a standardized pod fit varied interiors. The account names a timber-series wood-grain finish and Graphic-AL composite, but does not provide a complete current specification, fire-rating schedule, environmental product declaration or maintenance manual.

How the pod was produced and installed
Konrad Prefab manufactured the units at its Springfield, Vermont facility. Instead of shipping each suite as one indivisible object, the company sent components in sections for assembly at the destination. The shipment included tools and instructions, according to the 2017 article.
Assembly sequence in the reported model
- Fabrication at the plant: Components were produced and prepared at Konrad Prefab’s Springfield facility.
- Sectioned shipment: The parts were transported in sections rather than as a fully assembled pod, a strategy that can ease access through doors, loading areas and elevators.
- Site preparation: The receiving facility still had to confirm a suitable footprint and coordinate any required building services, approvals and access provisions.
- On-site assembly: Installers used the supplied tools and instructions to put the sections together.
- Commissioning: Before opening the suite, the operator would need to verify lighting, sensors, ventilation, locking, electrical connections and cleaning procedures. The source does not publish a commissioning checklist, so those items should be confirmed with the responsible manufacturer and project professionals.
Jaacks estimated that a novice could construct one in less than three hours. That is his estimate as reported in the 2017 article, not an independently timed installation test. Actual duration would depend on site access, crew familiarity, service connections, inspections and any local requirements.
Features reported in the 2017 account
The article lists several features intended to make the suite usable without a staff member stationed nearby:
- LED lighting for illumination inside the pod.
- Motion sensors to control or activate systems when someone enters.
- Air-circulation fans to move air through the enclosure.
- App-based discovery and reservation, allowing users to find and reserve a pod.
- Phone-based locking and unlocking, enabled by electronic sensors.
These are reported product features from the 2017 source. They should not be read as verified specifications for every current model. The article does not state battery life, connectivity standards, accessibility controls, acoustic performance, cleaning chemicals, replacement intervals, cybersecurity practices or what happens when a phone, sensor or network connection fails. A current purchaser would need those details in writing.

What the features mean for operations
For an operator, reservation and electronic access introduce a small technology system into what might otherwise be a simple room. The facilities plan should identify who owns the account, how users receive access, how a reservation is cancelled, and how staff unlock the pod during an emergency or technical fault. Motion-controlled lighting and fans also need a manual override or documented recovery procedure. None of those procedures is specified in the historical account, so they are due-diligence questions rather than established capabilities.
Where the units were reported to be located
The article said nearly 300 units were located across the United States at publication. It named airports, offices, sports arenas, conference centers, and government and military buildings as settings. “Nearly 300” is a dated figure from the 2017 account, not a current deployment total.
The range of locations illustrates the design challenge. An airport may have strict security and passenger-flow constraints; an office may have a predictable employee population; an arena may need a solution that works during short, intense surges; and a government or military site may impose procurement, access and security rules. A standardized enclosure can address repeatability, but each site still needs a location-specific review of circulation, power, fire protection, accessibility, cleaning and supervision.

The 2017 article framed the unit as a cost-effective compliance option and stated that the Fair Labor Standards Act required a private space other than a bathroom for nursing mothers. That is a statement in the historical article, not complete current legal guidance. Federal requirements, state and local laws, collective-bargaining provisions, building codes and workplace rules can change and may impose additional conditions.

Before specifying a pod, an owner should obtain current advice from the relevant labor and building-code authorities and document:
- Whether the proposed space satisfies current federal, state and local lactation-accommodation rules.
- Required duration, privacy, security and employee access conditions.
- Electrical, ventilation, fire, accessibility and egress requirements for the chosen location.
- Cleaning, waste and infection-control responsibilities.
- How the accommodation works for workers who cannot use an app or who need an alternative access method.
A prefabricated unit can simplify delivery, but “prefabricated” does not mean exempt from permitting or code review.

The source does not provide a tested comparison or ranking. The following framework uses the project’s described characteristics to organize decisions a facilities or architecture team must make.
Recommended Free Tools
| Decision axis | Prefabricated lactation suite | Build-out of a permanent room |
|---|---|---|
| Deployment | Manufactured off-site, shipped in sections and assembled on location. | Constructed within the existing building footprint through site-based trades. |
| Construction coordination | Requires delivery access, assembly space and connections at the destination. | Requires demolition or interior work, trade sequencing and protection of occupied areas. |
| Privacy and access | Can be designed as a dedicated enclosure with electronic access features reported in 2017. | Can use the building’s doors and access-control systems, subject to the room’s location and configuration. |
| Maintenance | Needs a cleaning plan for the enclosure plus support for lighting, sensors, fans and access technology. | Uses building systems and finishes selected for that room, with maintenance integrated into normal facilities operations. |
| Floor-area fit | Placement is limited by the pod’s footprint, delivery route, clearances and required services. | Can use an irregular existing room but may consume scarce permanent floor area. |
| Customization | The account reports printed customization and a timber-series finish. | Finishes, millwork and equipment can be selected as part of the building project. |
| Future flexibility | A sectional, manufactured unit may be easier to relocate than a built room, subject to the manufacturer’s instructions and new-site approvals. | A permanent room is tied more closely to the building, but can be adapted through later renovation. |
The right choice depends on the building, schedule, lease term, workforce and legal requirements. The table is a planning aid, not evidence that one approach performs better in every setting.

What the current company naming means
A current LinkedIn company profile uses Ava Pods as the broader company identity and says Mamava remains its dedicated lactation product line as the company expands into privacy and wellness pods. The profile does not provide a dated rebrand announcement, current product specifications or an authoritative purchasing route. Readers should therefore treat the naming information as context, not as proof that a particular 2017 configuration is still sold or supported.
Anyone evaluating a contemporary installation should request current drawings, dimensions, accessibility information, electrical and ventilation requirements, finish data, warranty terms, replacement-part support, software and access-control documentation, cleaning guidance and code-assistance responsibilities. The historical article alone cannot establish present availability or performance.
Construction lessons from the collaboration
Start with an observed user problem
The project began with founders who had personally encountered inadequate pumping spaces. That experience produced concrete requirements—privacy, safety, comfort, affordability and easy cleaning—rather than an abstract statement about employee amenities. Construction teams can use the same method: interview likely users, observe travel and shift patterns, and convert those findings into spatial and operational requirements before selecting a system.

Design for the delivery path, not only the final room
Sectioned shipping and on-site assembly show why a prefabricated design must be developed around the entire logistics chain. Door widths, elevator capacity, turning radii, staging areas and working hours can determine whether a theoretically compact unit is practical at a particular site.
Make material choices serve fabrication and identity
Jaacks’s explanation links the ALPOLIC selection to workability, durability, weight, flexibility and the ability to print custom finishes. Those criteria connect manufacturing efficiency with the owner’s desire for a finished environment that looks intentional rather than improvised. A material review should still include the project’s fire, impact, moisture, acoustical and cleaning requirements.
Plan the service model along with the enclosure
Lighting, motion sensing, fans, reservations and phone-based locks turn a small room into an operational system. Ownership of software accounts, fault response, cleaning turnover, emergency access and user support should be assigned before opening day. If a feature is essential to privacy or availability, the project should include a non-digital fallback.
What this history can—and cannot—prove
- It establishes that Mamava’s concept arose from founders’ difficulty finding suitable pumping spaces while traveling.
- It identifies distinct roles for Mamava, Konrad Prefab and ALPOLIC in concept development, fabrication and material selection.
- It reports sectioned shipment, supplied assembly tools and instructions, and Jaacks’s estimate of less than three hours for a novice build.
- It reports LED lighting, motion sensors, fans, app discovery and reservation, and phone-based locking and unlocking as product features in 2017.
- It reports nearly 300 units across several U.S. venue types at that time.
- It does not independently test assembly time, comfort, acoustics, air quality, durability, legal compliance, adoption or breastfeeding outcomes.
- It does not provide current model specifications, current deployment numbers or a current purchasing channel.
The lasting significance of the partnership is therefore best understood as a design and delivery story. A need that had often been handled through improvised rooms was expressed as a repeatable architectural product, manufactured through prefabrication and given a recognizable finish. The article’s “movement” language describes that cultural framing; the available account does not measure a social outcome.
