Lennox error code 292 means the indoor-unit blower motor did not start, so the system enters Watchguard mode. Lennox lists a seized bearing, stuck blower wheel, or obstruction as possible causes, but the code does not identify the failed part. Record the alert, make only basic checks allowed by your unit’s owner manual, and call a qualified HVAC professional if the blower does not run or the alert returns.

What Lennox error code 292 means

Lennox’s alert tables describe code 292 as “The indoor unit blower motor will not start.” The system enters Watchguard mode, a protective operating state. Depending on the system, “indoor unit” may mean a furnace or an air handler; the code alone does not tell you which equipment type or component is involved. See the Lennox communicating-system alert table and Lennox S40 alert table.

What can cause the alert

Lennox lists a seized bearing, a stuck blower wheel, and obstructions as possible reasons the blower cannot start. These are possibilities, not a diagnosis: code 292 does not prove whether the motor, its module, the wheel, wiring, or another condition is responsible.

Lennox’s S40 alert table identifies the motor, motor module, or wheel as potential service replacements if the assembly does not operate or meet performance standards. Which part, if any, needs replacement depends on a technician’s diagnosis and the specific unit model; this is not a DIY repair instruction.

What to do when you see code 292

  1. Record the alert. Note the exact code and any accompanying message on the thermostat or control. Lennox advises owners to review current thermostat notifications and write down the code. Its troubleshooting FAQ recommends contacting the dealer or Lennox if you need help resolving a system problem.
  2. Make only basic checks covered by your model’s manual. For example, check that the thermostat is set appropriately and whether the air filter is visibly plugged if those checks apply to your equipment. The SL297NV homeowner manual includes these in its pre-service checklist, but it applies to that model. Use the manual for your own unit. Lennox’s code 292 entry does not say that changing a filter fixes this alert.
  3. Arrange qualified service if the problem persists. Contact a qualified HVAC professional or Lennox dealer if the blower does not run, the system remains without heating or cooling, or code 292 returns. Lennox labels the alert “Service Urgent” in its S40 table and directs owners to dealer or customer support. You can find assistance through Lennox product help and contact.

Service procedures belong to a licensed professional. The SL297NV manual specifically warns, “Do not attempt to service the unit in any way,” and advises calling a technician if the unit will not operate.

What happens if the alert clears

Lennox says the alert clears automatically after the indoor blower starts successfully. A cleared notification only establishes that the blower started; it does not confirm that an intermittent problem is permanently resolved. If the alert reappears or the blower stops again, report that history to the service technician.

Code 292 is not code 291

The two alerts describe different conditions. Lennox associates code 291 with heat airflow below minimum and specifically directs technicians to check dirty filters, other airflow restrictions, and blower performance. Code 292 concerns the blower motor’s failure to start. Do not treat the 291 filter guidance as a stated cause or remedy for code 292.

291 Heat airflow below minimum Technician should check dirty filters and other airflow restrictions.
292 Indoor-unit blower motor will not start No filter-specific cause or remedy is given.

Both descriptions come from the Lennox communicating-system alert table.
