Tape measures and rules measure; levels check alignment; lasers project references; and chalk lines, squares, crayons, and markers help lay out or mark work. The right choice also depends on the working area, setup, accuracy required, and whether a receiver or other accessory is needed.
What tools fall under layout, measuring, and marking?
The categories overlap, and manufacturers group tools differently. DEWALT’s measuring and marking category includes tape measures, levels, chalk lines and reels, squares, stud finders, lumber crayons, markers, and lasers. STABILA’s broader product overview includes measuring and layout equipment such as spirit levels and laser instruments. These are manufacturer category descriptions, not a universal classification.
- Distance measurement: Tape measures and folding rules record lengths and dimensions.
- Level and plumb checks: Spirit levels help check whether a surface is horizontal or vertical.
- Projected references: Laser tools project lines or right angles onto a work surface, helping transfer a reference across an area.
- Layout and marking: Chalk lines, squares, crayons, and markers help establish or transfer visible lines and points.
- Finding concealed framing: Stud finders are included in some manufacturers’ measuring and marking categories.
For example, DEWALT’s measuring and marking tools category lists several of these families, while STABILA’s product overview reflects its own product range.
How do I choose between a tape measure, level, and laser?
Start with the reference you need. A tape measure gives you a distance; a spirit level checks a surface or edge; a laser projects a line or square to guide placement across a work area. These tools solve different problems, so a laser does not eliminate the need to measure dimensions or verify a surface when the task calls for those checks.

| If the task is… | Consider… | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Measuring a dimension or distance | Tape measure, folding rule, or electronic measuring tool | Required measuring range, units, and access to the measurement points. Electronic tool capabilities vary by model. |
| Checking horizontal or vertical alignment | Spirit level | Whether its length suits the work and whether it can be placed against the surface or edge. |
| Transferring a reference line across a room or surface | Laser level or other line-projecting laser | Visible range under stated conditions, self-leveling or manual setup, mounting options, and whether a receiver is needed. |
| Marking a line or point on material | Chalk line, square, crayon, or marker | Whether the mark needs to be straight, square, durable, or easy to see on the material. |
Use the tool’s specified tolerance and range for the particular model rather than assuming that one manufacturer’s figure applies to another tool. A projected line’s visibility and usable range depend on the conditions stated by its manufacturer.
Which tools suit tile layout and finishing work?
For tile layout, STABILA recommends spirit levels and laser leveling instruments. Its FLS 90 squaring line laser page describes projected square lines up to 50 ft (15 m), allowing layout lines to be reviewed before they are made permanent. This is a manufacturer-stated capability for that model, not a general range for squaring lasers.

See STABILA’s flooring and tile recommendations for its application guidance. A projected square can assist with laying out a reference, while a spirit level serves the distinct purpose of checking level or plumb.
What should I consider for framing and larger layouts?
For tall framing work, STABILA lists extendable plate levels for use with tall walls, doors, and windows. For long-distance rectangular layout, it describes the LA 180 L as projecting two right angles, three vertical lines, and one horizontal line. STABILA states a working range up to 330 ft (100 m) with a receiver and leveling accuracy of ±3/32 in at 100 ft (±0.07 mm/m) for that model.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should I compare laser specifications?
Compare specifications only when they describe the same kind of performance under comparable conditions. “Visible line” and “working range with receiver” are not interchangeable: the former describes line visibility, while the latter can depend on a receiver. Manufacturer specifications should be read as model-specific claims, not independent test results.

What else should I compare before choosing?
- Task and scale: Match the tool to measuring, checking alignment, projecting a line or square, or marking. Consider whether you are laying out a short interior reference or a larger area.
- Range and conditions: Check whether the stated range is for a visible line, typical indoor use, or operation with a receiver.
- Accuracy: Read the stated tolerance and units for the exact model. Do not treat a model specification as a universal standard.
- Setup and placement: Check whether operation is self-leveling or manual, whether the tool has a mounting thread or magnetic attachment, and whether you can position it where the work requires.
- Power and protection: Where stated, compare battery type, operating time, protection rating, impact protection, and transport features against job-site needs.
