Laser Cutter Speed and Power: How to Find the Right Settings

Laser cutter settings are machine- and material-specific. Use the manufacturer’s guidance as a starting point, then test the exact stock and job on scrap.

There is no speed-and-power setting that works for every laser cutter, material and job. Start with the manufacturer’s guidance for your exact machine and material, then test on scrap from the same stock. Cutting and engraving need different settings, and the result also depends on factors such as thickness, focus, passes and air assist.

What speed and power mean

Speed is how quickly the laser head moves across the work. Power is the laser output setting. Together they influence how much energy reaches a given area, but they do not determine the result on their own. Trotec also identifies frequency, number of passes, air assist, resolution and focus or controlled defocus as relevant laser parameters. See its guidance on determining optimal laser parameters.

A setting that cuts through one material may fail on another, and a setting suitable for engraving may damage or cut through the surface. Machine type and model, material and thickness, and the intended operation all matter. Check speed units as well: a number without its units and operating context is not a usable setting.

Why there is no universal settings chart

Manufacturers publish recommended settings for particular machines and materials, not a universal speed-to-power formula. AtomStack says its listed parameters are starting points and recommends testing on scrap because results can vary with material batch, environment, machine condition, focus and air assist. xTool likewise warns that processing results may vary by material manufacturer and ambient environment, and its parameter guidance includes power, speed and pass count.

Cutting and engraving need different settings

Cutting

For a cut, the practical checks are whether the beam passes through the material and whether the resulting edge is acceptable for the job. Speed can affect cut quality, according to Trotec’s explanation of what laser parameters mean. Do not assume that increasing power alone will solve an incomplete cut; confirm the material, thickness, focus, air assist and pass count against the machine guidance.

Engraving

For engraving, assess darkness or contrast and whether fine details remain clear. A setting intended to cut may remove too much material or spoil detail. Higher-power CO2 tubes can allow deeper cutting in one pass and faster engraving in some materials, according to Epilog’s wattage guidance; that manufacturer statement is not a universal performance rule and does not substitute for settings suited to your machine and stock.

How to find a suitable setting

  1. Identify the machine and stock. Confirm the laser technology and exact model, plus the material type and thickness. Check that the material is appropriate for the machine and intended process.
  2. Find model-specific guidance. Use the manufacturer’s table or software preset for that material, thickness and operation. Verify the speed units and whether the entry is for cutting or engraving.
  3. Set the other relevant parameters. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for focus, passes and air assist where supported. Keep other conditions consistent while tuning.
  4. Test on matching scrap. Use a scrap piece from the same stock or batch when possible. Change settings in controlled increments, changing one variable at a time where practical, and record each result.
  5. Judge the result against the job. For cutting, check through-cut and edge quality; for engraving, check contrast and detail. Select the settings that meet the task’s requirements rather than chasing a number from a chart.

Make test results comparable and repeatable

A useful comparison holds the machine, material, thickness, operation, focus and air-assist conditions constant. Record the variables that could explain a different outcome; otherwise a successful setting may be hard to reproduce on another batch or after a machine adjustment.

  • Machine make, exact model and laser type
  • Material, thickness and batch or supplier where known
  • Operation: cut or engrave
  • Speed and its units, power and number of passes
  • Focus or defocus setting, plus air-assist condition
  • Outcome: cut-through and edge quality, or engraving contrast and detail

Processing time can also help compare two settings, but only after confirming that both meet the required quality. A faster run is not an improvement if it leaves an incomplete cut or loses engraving detail.

Safety and unfamiliar materials

A settings chart does not establish that a material is safe to process. Before working with unfamiliar stock, follow the machine manual, the material supplier’s safety information, ventilation requirements and applicable workplace guidance. Do not infer safe processing conditions from a speed-and-power recommendation alone.
