Keep the informal woodland character where bare earth stays firm; improve wet or heavily walked sections with mulch, gravel, stabilized decomposed granite, or stepping stones. Route, drainage, slope, foot traffic, and accessibility should determine the surface—not appearance alone.
Where a dirt pathway works—and where it does not
A simple track of hard-packed soil and fallen leaves can feel at home in a woodland or minimally maintained part of a garden. Trim plants that encroach on the route, or use branches, wood chips, or mulch to make its edges easier to read. This approach is most suitable when foot traffic is light and the ground does not stay wet.
Bare earth can turn muddy and slippery in wet conditions. If people walk the route often, or rain leaves puddles and ruts, consider improving the surface and drainage rather than relying on soil alone. A path also helps direct circulation and protect nearby planting from being trampled; plan it between useful destinations and along the way people naturally move through the garden. UF/IFAS walkway guidance and NC State Extension Master Gardener Volunteers, Buncombe County discuss path placement and natural-looking options.
Choose a surface to match use and site conditions
| Surface | Best fit | Wet weather, slope, and upkeep |
|---|---|---|
| Packed earth and leaf litter | Lightly used woodland routes where an informal look and minimal intervention matter. | Can become muddy or slippery when wet. Keep the route defined and avoid relying on it for heavily used areas. |
| Mulch or wood chips | A soft, natural-looking cover for exposed soil and informal paths. | Permeable, but organic material breaks down and needs renewal. Singapore’s National Parks Board notes regular upkeep for organic surfaces in tropical conditions; local decay rates vary. NParks pathways guide |
| Loose gravel | A permeable, natural-looking surface where aggregate can be contained. | Can shift, spread, or need topping up. Edging may help contain it. Fabric is not always necessary and may become visible if gravel moves, according to the Waterwise Garden Planner. |
| Stabilized decomposed granite (DG) | A natural-feeling, permeable surface that can be compacted for a more settled path. | Moisten and compact it with a tamper. It may behave like wet muddy soil just after rain and is prone to erosion on steep slopes, so it is generally a poor fit there. Waterwise Garden Planner |
| Stepping stones | An informal route with planting, gravel, or mulch between stones. | Set stones stable and level; weeds may need attention in the gaps. NParks and UF/IFAS include stepping stones among pathway options. |
UF/IFAS also lists flagstones and crushed shells as natural-looking walkway materials. Availability, suitability, and installation effort depend on local suppliers and site conditions. The Waterwise guide focuses on California native and waterwise gardens, so its climate and sourcing context should not be assumed to apply everywhere.

Plan the route, width, and drainage
Set the route around how the garden is used
Choose a clear origin and destination, then check how the route relates to beds, structures, and everyday movement. Consider whether people will pass one another, carry equipment, or use mobility aids before settling on a width or surface. UF/IFAS says walkways intended for more than one person should be at least 3 feet wide; this is a recommendation in its guidance, not a universal residential code.
Width examples differ by context. Singapore’s National Parks Board gives 0.9 m as an example for a primary garden path, 0.45 m for a secondary path, and 1.5–2 m for a wheelchair-friendly path in its 2023 community-garden guidance. These are Singapore-context examples, not universal private-garden specifications. Check applicable local requirements and the needs of the people who will use the route.

Give water a safe way out
Mark the route, remove vegetation where needed, and shape the ground so runoff moves toward an appropriate outlet—not into a low spot that could damage the path or adjacent planting. UF/IFAS describes a slight cross-slope of 2% as one way to encourage drainage; the guidance’s year is not displayed. The appropriate grade depends on the site.
Edging can help retain gravel or mulch, but it should not trap water. Fairfax County advises leaving gaps in edging at low spots so water can escape instead of ponding. Its advice is part of local erosion guidance, so assess where runoff should go on your own property. Fairfax County erosion-control guidance

Install the surface without creating a drainage problem
- Mark and assess the route. Identify its destinations, likely traffic, slope, drainage outlet, and any accessibility needs before removing vegetation or choosing materials.
- Prepare the ground. Clear the path area as needed and shape it so water drains in the intended direction. Do not cover an actively eroding area without addressing the runoff causing the damage.
- Choose edging where containment matters. Gravel and mulch can spread; stabilized DG also needs an edge that allows proper compaction. Metal, plastic, or natural-rock edging are options described by the Waterwise Garden Planner. Leave suitable drainage gaps where water needs an exit.
- Install the chosen surface. For stabilized DG, moisten and compact it with a hand tamper. Place stepping stones so they are stable and level, with gaps suited to the surrounding planting or fill.
- Decide whether fabric is appropriate. Landscape fabric is not a universal requirement. Fairfax County recommends it in its exposed-soil path advice to reduce weeds and material sinking, while the Waterwise guide says it may be unnecessary under some residential gravel paths and can show if gravel shifts. Choose based on the material and site rather than assuming it belongs beneath every path.
Make the path accessible for its intended users
Loose gravel, grass, and stepping-stone routes may be difficult for wheelchair users. If a continuous, firm route is needed, consider a stable surface such as concrete or brick and plan for adequate width, turning space, and transitions. Singapore’s National Parks Board describes wide, stable concrete or brick routes in its community-garden guidance; its dimensions are contextual examples, not a substitute for local accessibility requirements.

There is no single maintenance interval that fits every garden. Inspect after heavy rain and regular use. Look for puddles, ruts, loose aggregate, displaced stones, spreading gravel, weeds, and muddy bare patches. Clear blocked drainage routes, restore the intended grade, trim plants narrowing the path, and replace or top up material where it has shifted or broken down.

If runoff is already causing erosion, changing the surface alone may not solve it. Fairfax County discusses redirecting or capturing runoff and using terraces on steep slopes. Those measures are site-specific and may require qualified help or permits depending on location and scale.
