Lanai, Porch, Patio, or Veranda: How to Choose the Right Outdoor Space

Patios, porches, lanais, and verandas differ in typical elevation, cover, openness, and relationship to the house—but regional usage varies. Compare the features you need and check local definitions and rules before building or enclosing an outdoor space.

A patio is usually a ground-level outdoor area, often paved; a porch is generally a covered platform attached to a home; and a veranda is often a roofed porch or gallery along a building. A lanai is an open-air living space especially associated with Hawaiian architecture. The terms overlap by region and context, so compare the features you want and check local definitions before building or enclosing a space.

The useful distinctions are practical: whether the area is covered, open or screened, level with the ground or raised, and how it connects to the house. A name alone is not a reliable specification for a construction project.

Quick Comparison

Space Usual description Features to compare
Lanai An attached open-air area, often roofed, associated especially with Hawaiian residential architecture. Roof, openness, screening, attachment, and local legal definition.
Porch A covered outdoor platform attached to a home, commonly near an entrance and often raised. Roof, height, location, access, and whether it is screened.
Patio An outdoor area generally at ground level, commonly finished with pavers, gravel, or concrete. Surface, grade, drainage, cover, enclosure, and connection to the house.
Veranda A roofed porch or gallery along a building; some local guidance uses the term for one that wraps around multiple sides. Length, roof, attachment, views, and local usage.

These are working descriptions, not a universal building-code glossary. Local rules may define the same term differently.

What Is a Lanai?

A lanai is an open-air living space associated especially with Hawaiian architecture. It may be roofed and attached to a home, but whether it must remain open, and how much of its perimeter must be open, depends on the definition being used.

For example, the City and County of Honolulu’s zoning definition requires at least half the perimeter to remain permanently open. A separate Hawaii Community Development Authority administrative rule uses a different threshold. These are distinct local regulatory definitions, not a single nationwide standard.

A National Register nomination describes the lanai’s development in Hawaii: it recounts how the typical five-foot-wide American porch was widened in Hawaii in the late 1870s and early 1880s into an open-air room used for seating, meals, receiving callers, and social life. That is the nomination’s historical account, not a universal definition or a present-day design recommendation.

What Is a Porch?

A porch is generally a covered outdoor platform attached to a home, commonly near an entrance. It is often raised rather than flush with the ground, and may be open or screened. Historical and regional usage can overlap with terms such as veranda, piazza, and portico.

What Is a Patio?

A patio is generally an outdoor area at ground level. Common surfaces include pavers, gravel, and concrete. It may be open to the sky or covered, and a cover or enclosure does not necessarily change its ground-level character.

When planning a patio, consider the surface, grade, drainage, connection to the house, and whether you want a cover or enclosure. Check local rules before making changes; requirements can depend on the project and jurisdiction.

What Is a Veranda?

A veranda is often described as a roofed porch or gallery along a building. Some local design guidance distinguishes a veranda by its extension around multiple sides, but historical and regional terminology is not consistent.

Think about how much of the building the space follows, whether it wraps around a corner, and how it relates to views and circulation. Use local guidance or project documents to clarify what the term means in your area.

How to Choose the Right Outdoor Space

  1. Decide how much weather protection you want. A roof offers overhead cover; screens can keep insects out while retaining ventilation. Partial enclosure may provide additional comfort or privacy.
  2. Consider the ground and elevation. A patio is generally at ground level, while a porch is often raised. Think about the site and the surface you want, such as pavers, gravel, or concrete.
  3. Look at the connection to the house. Decide whether you want direct access from the home and whether the space should sit near an entrance or extend along the building.
  4. Plan the footprint and views. A veranda may extend along or around the building; a porch or patio may be more localized. Choose a layout that suits the intended view and circulation.
  5. Check local requirements before building or changing the space. Rules for covers, screening, or enclosures vary. Oregon City, for example, describes a limited permit exception for some covers subject to area, height, and setback limits. That example applies only to its jurisdiction; ask your local building department about your project.

Terminology and Local Rules

Architectural terms are not always used consistently across regions or historical periods. A lanai may be described differently in everyday speech than it is in a local zoning code. Likewise, the words porch and veranda can overlap in historical writing and local guidance.

Is a patio always uncovered?

No. A patio is generally identified by being at ground level, not by whether it has a roof. It may be open, covered, or enclosed.

What materials can be used for a patio?

Common options include pavers, gravel, and concrete. The suitable choice depends on the site and the intended use.

Do I need a permit to cover or enclose an outdoor space?

Requirements depend on the jurisdiction and project. Some locations allow limited exceptions subject to conditions, but an exception in one city does not apply elsewhere. Check with your local building department before work begins.
