It is used in wood connections, including heavy-timber and structural-framing applications, but its size alone does not tell you how much a connection can safely carry. The wood, geometry, loading, installation and governing design all matter.
What is a lag bolt?
A lag bolt is the familiar name for a lag screw: a fastener with coarse threads that engage wood. Unlike a conventional machine bolt, it does not simply pass through a clearance hole to be secured with a nut. The City of Phoenix uses “lag screws” and “lag bolts” for the same category in its Lag Screws and Lag Bolts — Use and Installation Policy. Hex lag screws are used in heavy timber, structural framing and outdoor applications, according to Portland Bolt’s product information. Those are general uses, not proof that a particular screw suits a particular structure or exposure.
How to choose one for a project
Start with the approved plan or product instructions rather than selecting by appearance or nominal diameter alone. For a structural connection, the specified fastener and the surrounding wood members work together as a designed assembly.
- Size and embedment: Confirm diameter, overall length and required threaded penetration into the main wood member.
- Connection details: Check head style, member thickness, spacing, edge and end distances, and the required clearance and lead holes.
- Materials and loading: Identify the wood species or engineered wood, the direction of the load, and whether lateral and withdrawal forces occur together.
- Exposure: Use the material or corrosion protection specified for the environment; outdoor use alone does not establish that any given finish is suitable.
- Design basis: Determine whether the connection follows an applicable prescriptive detail or needs project-specific engineering, and follow the governing plans and code for the location.
Phoenix’s policy cites the 2024 International Building Code, 2024 International Residential Code and 2024 AWC National Design Specification provisions. It is municipal guidance, not a universal rule for projects elsewhere.

How to install a lag screw
For structural work covered by Phoenix’s policy, the drawings are to specify the lead-hole diameter for the threaded portion and the clearance-hole diameter and length for the unthreaded shank. The policy states: “The threaded portion of the lag screw shall be inserted in its lead hole by turning with a wrench, not by driving with a hammer.”
- Find the applicable instructions. Use the approved drawing or the fastener manufacturer’s directions for the specific connection.
- Mark and align the members. Position the pieces as shown in the plan, and confirm the specified spacing and edge and end distances.
- Drill the specified holes. Where required, make a clearance hole through the unthreaded-shank area and a lead hole for the threaded portion. Do not assume one pilot-hole diameter fits every screw and wood condition.
- Turn the screw into place. Use a wrench or the tool specified for the connection. Do not hammer a structural lag screw into its lead hole.
A NIST-hosted FEMA guide also describes clearance and lead holes and wrench installation, but it is older supplementary guidance. Its generic dimensions should not override current code, engineered plans or product instructions.

How much weight can a lag bolt hold?
There is no reliable universal “pounds held” figure for a lag bolt. Capacity depends on the complete connection, not just the screw’s nominal size. Phoenix’s structural policy identifies factors including threaded penetration into the main member, head pull-through, combined lateral and withdrawal loading, and local wood failures such as net-section rupture and tear-out. It also calls for reduced shear values when penetration is less than eight times the fastener diameter; that is a design condition, not a general strength rating.
For a structural application, use the capacity established by the applicable design or qualified engineering for the actual fastener, wood and connection geometry. A product description or a screw’s diameter by itself is not enough to establish safe capacity.

How tight should a lag bolt be?
Do not apply a generic torque figure. Portland Bolt’s lag screw torque guidance says there is no general published torque specification for turning a lag screw into wood. Follow the project or product instructions for the specific connection; an invented foot-pound target is not a substitute for those directions.
