It is a home moving from accumulated belongings and undecided piles to a considered set of possessions, each with a place. The change happens category by category—and the sorting stage may look messier before it looks finished.
What does a KonMari before and after look like?
The KonMari Method frames tidying as a way to clear clutter and make room for the life you want. In practice, the “before” may include crowded storage, belongings spread across rooms, and decisions left unresolved. The “after” is a deliberate set of items chosen to keep, grouped and stored so they are accessible.
That outcome is personal, not a prescribed room design. A successful result does not have to resemble a minimalist show home, and the method does not promise that every home will look the same or stay permanently tidy. Marie Kondo’s official method page puts the goal in personal terms: “When you’re choosing what to keep, ask your heart; when you’re choosing where to store something, ask your house!” (KonMari, “Why the KonMari Method™ Works”).
How the process changes a home
The official method sets out six rules: commit to tidying, imagine your ideal lifestyle, finish discarding first, tidy by category rather than location, follow the category order, and ask whether each item sparks joy. The order is clothes, books, papers, komono (miscellaneous items), then sentimental items. - Picture the life you want. Start by imagining how you want your home and daily routines to feel.
- Gather one category. Bring its items together from around the home before making decisions.
- Choose what to keep. Handle items one by one and ask whether each sparks joy. Keep what does; let go of the rest with gratitude.
- Finish discarding before storage. Deciding what remains first gives you a clearer sense of what needs a home.
- Assign homes to the keepers. Store similar things together and give each retained item a designated place.
This sequence explains why an in-progress room can look worse than the “before”: gathering a category makes belongings visible and may temporarily spread them across a floor or bed. That is a work stage, not the finished result. An empty shelf alone is not the goal; the kept belongings need practical homes too.
Clothing before and after: a drawer example
Clothing is the first category. A useful comparison is the same drawer before and after: a mixed or stacked drawer on one side, and selected clothes folded upright and visible on the other. The visual change comes from both deciding what to keep and making the remaining garments easy to see.

KonMari’s official folding instructions for a short-sleeve shirt are to fold each side toward the center, fold lengthwise while leaving a small gap at the edge, then fold in half or thirds so the shirt can stand upright. Long sleeves and pants have variations. These are the method’s instructions, not a measured claim about wrinkle reduction or how much more a drawer can hold. How to make a before-and-after comparison useful
For a fair visual, photograph the same space from the same angle and distinguish a completed category from a temporary sorting stage. A side-by-side view can help a reader see whether the change is functional as well as visual.

- Is there less visible clutter?
- Are belongings grouped by category?
- Can you see and reach the items you chose to keep?
- Does each retained item have a designated place?
- Is the category actually finished, including decisions and storage?
These are practical comparison questions derived from the method’s steps, not an official scoring system or a requirement for documenting the process.
Do you need special storage products?
No. The method makes storage a step after discarding and focuses on assigning a place to each item; branded organizers are not a prerequisite. Boxes or dividers can help separate belongings within drawers and on shelves. KonMari’s Hikidashi guide suggests large boxes for jeans and sweaters, medium ones for T-shirts and shorts, and small ones for intimates. Its page also references a Container Store collaboration, but those product suggestions are optional rather than necessary to achieve the method’s basic result. A single transformation can illustrate one person’s process, but it cannot establish what results are typical, how long the method takes, what it costs, or whether the result lasts. The official method, folding, and storage pages cited here provide no measured before-and-after outcome figure. So a credible account should show what changed in the pictured home without turning one person’s result into a promise for everyone.
