What is your toilet doing: running constantly, refilling every few minutes, flushing weakly, or leaving water in the bowl? Start with the symptom. A chain, fill valve, or seal problem is usually inside the tank; a slow-draining bowl or repeated clogs can point to the trapway, vent, or waste line instead. Kohler toilets use different flush-valve designs, so identify the toilet model and valve style before buying replacement parts.
This guide follows Kohler’s U.S.-oriented support guidance reviewed October 8, 2026. Use the installation and care instructions for your specific model when they differ from general advice.
Toilet runs constantly
Water that keeps flowing from the tank into the bowl commonly points to a binding trip lever, water spilling into the flush-valve overflow, or debris beneath the fill-valve cap, according to Kohler’s running-toilet troubleshooting.
- Remove the tank lid and check whether the chain catches on the lever or another part. Adjust it to leave roughly one to two links of slack, as Kohler recommends.
- Check whether the tank water is reaching the overflow. Adjust the water level so it stops below the overflow opening.
- If the chain and water level are not the cause, clean and flush the fill valve according to the model instructions; debris or sediment can keep it from closing.
- If the toilet still runs, replace the fill valve only with the part specified for your model.
Turn off the supply valve before working on internal parts. Kohler notes that sediment can be loosened in supply lines when water is turned off and back on, including during a new installation.

Toilet refills every so often
A toilet that is quiet for a while and then briefly refills may be losing water slowly from the tank. Check for the same chain interference or overflow described above, then inspect the flapper or canister seal for dirt, wear, or misalignment. Kohler recommends replacing a worn or dirty seal. If the leak continues, the gasket where the flush valve meets the tank bottom may also need replacement. In-tank cleaners and water conditions can contribute to seal wear. See Kohler’s guidance for toilets that run intermittently.
Check the refill hose position
A refill hose positioned with its end below the tank waterline can siphon water into the bowl, causing a slow leak and cycling that Kohler says may occur every 15–30 minutes. On non-canister models, make sure the hose is secured by its clip; Kohler identifies clip 51261. On canister models, reconnect the hose to the port at the top of the flush valve. Kohler describes a paperclip as a temporary clip substitute, but says it can corrode quickly, so it is not a lasting repair. See Kohler’s refill-hose instructions.

Flush is weak, or the bowl drains slowly
First check the simple tank and fixture causes: a water level below the marked line, a partly closed supply shutoff, or an obstruction in the trapway, jet, or rim holes. Kohler’s general toilet troubleshooting guide recommends setting the tank to its marked waterline, fully opening the shutoff valve, and clearing accessible obstructions. Model-specific instructions take precedence.
When the symptom may be in the vent or waste line
A tank adjustment will not fix a restricted vent or waste stack. Kohler lists this cluster of clues for a possible restriction: water rises in the bowl, rises quickly but drains slowly, clogs recur, the handle must be held down, nearby drains make sounds during a flush, or bubbles appear at the trapway opening. If these signs accompany a weak flush, see Kohler’s poor-flush and venting guidance and consider a plumber rather than replacing tank parts without evidence.

Water will not leave the bowl, or the toilet is clogged
For a suspected trapway clog, Kohler recommends a toilet auger or snake to free the obstruction. Use a toilet auger designed for this work and follow its instructions to avoid damaging the fixture. Kohler’s bowl-drainage guidance also cautions that if there is no obstruction, or the toilet remains slow after snaking, restricted venting may prevent a proper flush. Persistent slow drainage after the trapway is clear is a reason to investigate the vent or waste line, not to keep trying unrelated tank repairs.
Flush leaves the rim dirty or washes weakly
Obstructed rim holes can reduce rim wash and weaken the flush. Kohler identifies loose vitreous material and hard-water deposits as possible causes. Its rim-wash instructions begin by shutting off the water supply and flushing most of the tank water away, then clearing the rim holes. For deposits, Kohler describes applying a hard-water-deposit or lime-dissolving cleaner through the flush-valve opening and allowing 8–24 hours for the deposits to dissolve. Follow the cleaner label, protect surrounding surfaces, and avoid products or tools that could damage the fixture.

Handle moves but the toilet does not flush
Open the tank and see whether the chain has come loose from the trip lever or flush valve. Reconnect it and adjust excessive slack so the lever lifts the flapper or canister. Confirm that the supply valve is open. Because Kohler uses different flush mechanisms, consult the model’s instructions if the chain, lever, or valve arrangement does not match these steps; its general troubleshooting guide is available here.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Tank refills slowly or makes excessive noise
For a long refill, Kohler recommends confirming the supply shutoff is fully open, then checking and cleaning the fill-valve inlet or head and the supply line, and flushing the lines. For excessive noise, its guide says to partially close the shutoff if pressure to the toilet is too high, then check the toilet’s performance after adjustment; also remove dirt or obstructions from the valve head. Do not force a valve or make adjustments that cause the toilet to refill inadequately.

Tank does not empty all its water
This can be normal rather than a fault. Kohler says a tank may hold close to 3 gallons while a gravity flush uses about one third of the tank water; the remaining water provides gravity-driven flush force. Kohler describes Class Five/AquaPiston canister valves as staying open for roughly one second and flapper-style valves for almost two seconds. These are approximate descriptions from Kohler, not universal timing tests for every toilet. If the flush itself is weak, check the waterline, supply, and bowl-side causes above instead of assuming the tank should empty completely.
Match replacement parts to the toilet
Before ordering a fill valve, flapper, canister seal, or flush-valve gasket, identify the toilet model and the mechanism in the tank. Kohler states that fill-valve part numbers vary by model, and its toilets do not all use the same flush-valve design. Use the model-specific installation/care guide and verified service-part listing; do not choose a part based only on appearance or a generic description. Kohler’s service-parts support can help locate model information and compatible parts.
When to call a plumber
- The bowl remains slow after a toilet auger clears the trapway, or clogs keep returning.
- Flushing causes nearby drains to gurgle or make noise, or bubbles appear in the bowl.
- Water rises in the bowl and drains slowly, suggesting a vent or waste-stack restriction.
- Basic tank checks do not stop a leak, or you cannot identify a compatible replacement part for the model.
These symptoms can extend beyond the toilet’s tank or trapway. A plumber can assess the vent and waste line and determine whether the issue is local or part of a larger drainage problem.
