Yes, Kohler’s Dekoda is real—but “AI toilet camera” is shorthand, not the complete technical description. Dekoda is a rim-mounted device that attaches to an existing toilet and uses optical sensors, spectroscopy, and machine-learning software to generate wellness insights about bowel patterns, hydration-related signals, and possible blood presence. Results appear in the Kohler Health app, and a membership is required.
It is not a replacement toilet, a microbiome test, or a medical diagnostic device. The most important questions are not only whether it can analyze waste, but how accurate those analyses are, what happens to the data, and whether the ongoing cost is worthwhile.

Dekoda is a compact Kohler Health device that clips onto the rim of an existing toilet. Kohler says its adjustable clamp fits most toilet bowls and requires no tools. It has a rechargeable battery and a removable magnetic charging connection, then sends personalized insights to the Kohler Health app.
It does not require purchasing one of Kohler’s complete smart toilets. Instead, it is a bolt-on bathroom health tracker intended to observe toilet waste during an authenticated visit. Kohler’s product description is available on its official Health product page.

Is it actually a camera?
Headlines commonly call Dekoda an AI toilet camera. That description is directionally understandable, but Kohler’s own materials emphasize advanced optical sensors, patented spectroscopy, and machine-learning algorithms rather than describing the product simply as a camera.
Published coverage provides more detail about image analysis. Wareable reported that the system captures images and uses AI to assess stool shape, texture, hydration level, and Bristol Stool Chart classification. PCWorld reported that the system was trained on more than one million data points and tracks characteristics including shape, consistency, frequency, and hydration.
Those are secondary-reported details, not independently published accuracy results. The safest summary is that Dekoda combines optical observation and spectroscopy with software analysis. Calling it only a camera oversimplifies the sensing system; calling it a clinical analyzer would overstate what has been established.
What can Dekoda tell you?
Gut-health patterns
Kohler presents Dekoda as a way to track digestive patterns over time. The app can associate bathroom results with information users enter about food, stress, medications, activity, travel, and other routines.
This is pattern tracking—not proof of causation. If a user records looser stools after changing diet, the data may help identify a recurring association, but it cannot prove that a particular food caused the change. Nor does “gut health” mean that Dekoda analyzes the gut microbiome or identifies a specific gastrointestinal disease.

Hydration-related insights
Kohler says Dekoda provides hydration-related insights and frames hydration in relation to focus, performance, and recovery. These should be understood as estimates or trends inferred from waste characteristics, not as equivalent to a blood test, urine specific-gravity measurement, or clinical assessment.
Stool appearance can vary with diet, supplements, medications, illness, intestinal transit time, and other conditions. Toilet-water level, lighting, and the circumstances of a particular bathroom visit may also affect an observation. A single result should not be treated as a definitive hydration measurement.
Stool characteristics and frequency
The system is intended to build a personal baseline from repeated observations. That can make it more useful for noticing changes in stool form, consistency, and frequency than for interpreting one isolated bowel movement.
The Bristol Stool Chart, referenced in coverage of Dekoda, is a visual classification system for stool form. It can provide a common language for describing consistency, but it is not a complete measure of digestive health and cannot explain why a bowel change occurred.
Possible blood presence
Kohler says Dekoda can alert users when blood is present in the bowl and offer information about what that finding could mean. The appropriate interpretation is “possible blood presence,” not a diagnosis.

Important: A blood alert should prompt consideration of medical advice, not self-diagnosis. Visible blood, repeated alerts, black or tarry stool, severe pain, dizziness, fainting, or other concerning symptoms warrant medical attention. Do not wait for a device trend before contacting a clinician.
Different sources of bleeding can have different significance, and consumer sensing systems can produce false positives or false negatives. No publicly established Dekoda sensitivity, specificity, false-alert rate, or peer-reviewed clinical endpoint was identified in the supplied material.
How does Dekoda work in practice?
- Attach the device: Fit the adjustable clamp to the toilet rim.
- Authenticate: Start a session with a fingerprint scan or through the Kohler Health app.
- Use the toilet normally: Kohler says the system is designed to operate during authenticated bathroom visits.
- Review the app: The resulting insights and longer-term patterns appear in the Kohler Health app.
Authentication is intended to prevent a guest’s waste from being assigned to the wrong profile. It does not guarantee that every user is recognized correctly, that an unauthenticated visit is analyzed, or that the interpretation of the waste is accurate. Those are separate issues: user identification, analytical accuracy, and data privacy.
How much does Kohler Dekoda cost?

Will Dekoda fit a normal toilet?
Kohler says the adjustable clamp fits most toilet bowls. That is not a guarantee of universal compatibility. Before buying, confirm:
- the bowl’s shape and rim geometry;
- clearance around the rim;
- whether the seat or lid interferes with the device;
- that the device can be positioned to observe both liquid and solid waste;
- Wi-Fi, phone, and app requirements;
- the warranty and return period if the fit is unsuitable.
The available information does not establish every compatible bowl design or provide a universal fit guarantee. Renters and households with unusual, compact, wall-mounted, or heavily enclosed toilet configurations should be especially careful.

What happens if the toilet is flushed quickly?
This is one of the practical questions the public product material does not clearly answer. It is not established whether Dekoda requires a particular dwell time, water level, lighting condition, or user behavior to capture usable data.
Similarly, the available material does not clearly state whether analysis happens locally or in the cloud, whether readings are cached during an internet outage, whether historical data remains available after cancellation, whether data can be exported, or what functionality survives a server or app failure.

What happens to the waste data?
Kohler says Dekoda uses fingerprint authentication, end-to-end encryption, and sensors intended to look into the toilet rather than elsewhere in the bathroom. Those are meaningful design claims, but they do not answer every data-governance question.
“End-to-end encryption” alone does not reveal:
- whether raw images leave the device;
- whether raw images are retained;
- who can access images or derived health information;
- whether Kohler or contractors can view data;
- whether data is used to train algorithms;
- how long raw and processed data are kept;
- whether deletion is immediate and complete;
- whether users can export their history;
- what happens after membership cancellation;
- how household members’ profiles are separated.
Kohler’s general privacy policy says information collected through Kohler Health is excluded and directs readers to a separate Kohler Health privacy policy. Do not treat the general policy as a substitute for the product-specific terms.

Before purchasing, privacy-conscious users should read the Kohler Health privacy notice and ask directly whether Dekoda is a camera, a spectroscopy sensor, or both; whether raw images are stored; how long data is retained; whether it is used for model training; how permanent deletion works; and what happens when the service ends. The supplied information does not establish whether Dekoda is covered by HIPAA, so that should not be assumed.
Is Dekoda medically reliable?
Dekoda should be treated as a consumer wellness tracker. Its potential value is in repeated observations and personal trends, not in diagnosing illness from a single bathroom visit.
It should not be described as detecting cancer, infections, diabetes, or specific gastrointestinal diseases unless Kohler publishes a separate, explicit, clinically supported claim. Machine-learning training data is not the same thing as independent clinical validation. No established sensitivity, specificity, error rate, or peer-reviewed validation for Dekoda’s health outputs is provided in the supplied research.
For persistent changes, suspected bleeding, unexplained weight loss, significant pain, fever, or other symptoms, a clinician and appropriate medical testing are more suitable than consumer AI interpretation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWho should consider it?
Dekoda may make sense for someone who:
- wants passive, repeated bathroom tracking rather than manual logging;
- is interested in stool-form, frequency, and hydration-related trends;
- understands that the output is not diagnostic;
- is comfortable placing a connected sensor in a highly private setting;
- values longitudinal patterns enough to justify hardware and membership costs.
It is a poor fit for someone who needs a medical test, expects definitive hydration or disease detection, has an incompatible toilet, dislikes recurring subscriptions, or is unwilling to accept uncertainty about image storage, service dependency, and data retention.
Alternatives to Dekoda
| Option | How it differs | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|
| Withings U-Scan | Primarily focuses on urine analysis rather than stool-form or stool-image monitoring. | Users interested in urine-based hydration or biomarker tracking. |
| Throne | A more directly comparable toilet-based stool-monitoring concept; current features, pricing, availability, and validation require separate checking. | Readers comparing AI-assisted stool tracking. |
| Toi Labs | Uses a smart toilet-seat approach rather than a small rim-mounted tracker. | Home-care or aging-monitoring situations where a seat-based installation is acceptable. |
| Manual tracking and clinical care | A symptom, medication, food, and hydration diary costs little; clinical testing is appropriate when symptoms require investigation. | Users who want basic trend awareness or need medically appropriate evaluation. |
None of these consumer products should automatically be treated as a diagnostic device. The right choice depends on whether the goal is urine analysis, stool-pattern tracking, caregiving support, low-cost self-observation, or actual medical investigation.
