To identify a bolt, measure its diameter, length and thread pitch, then check its head markings and material against the specification for the assembly. A bolt that fits is not automatically suitable: strength, corrosion exposure, joint design and installation all matter.
How to identify a bolt
Start with measurements rather than appearance. Record the diameter, length, thread type and pitch, head style, markings, and any visible material or finish. A thread pitch gauge helps identify the thread; calipers can help measure dimensions. These tools establish measurements, not whether the fastener is safe for a particular use.
- Measure diameter. Measure across the thread crests, not the valleys. Calipers can help check the diameter.
- Measure length. For most bolts, measure from the underside of the head to the end. For a countersunk fastener, measure its overall length, including the head.
- Determine thread pitch. Metric pitch is the distance between adjacent thread crests. Inch fasteners are commonly specified by threads per inch. Compare the threads with a pitch gauge or a known matching nut; never force a nut that resists.
- Record markings and finish. Note any radial lines, numbers, head shape, coating or other visible details. Treat these as clues to verify, not a complete specification.
Match the thread, not just the diameter
Two bolts can have the same diameter but different thread pitches. Coarse and fine threads of the same diameter are not interchangeable. A mismatch can damage the threads or prevent the joint from engaging correctly.
Confirm the thread specification with a gauge or a known matching nut. The nut should turn on without force; resistance is a reason to stop and recheck, not to tighten harder. Record the full thread specification when sourcing a replacement, rather than relying on diameter alone.

What bolt-head markings tell you
Radial lines on some SAE bolts and numbers on metric bolts can indicate a strength classification. Read markings as part of identification, but do not use appearance alone to decide that a bolt is suitable. Confirm the required fastener in the equipment maker’s specification, drawing or applicable standard, especially for a safety-critical joint.
The Government of Canada’s 1970 aviation publication Know your bolts notes that selection can depend on more than size or shape, including corrosion resistance, finish, material, temperature, tensile strength, tolerance, threading, locking devices and head clearance. These factors illustrate why a head marking alone cannot identify every requirement for a particular assembly.

Choose material and finish for the conditions
Strength is only one part of selection. Consider corrosion exposure, temperature, chemical contact and the materials being joined. A coating or stainless material that suits one environment may not be appropriate for another, including where dissimilar metals meet. “Stainless” and “stronger” are not complete selection rules.
Check the assembly’s specification for both material and finish. If the requirement is unclear, consult the equipment maker or a qualified engineer rather than choosing by appearance or substituting a supposedly better grade.

Check the whole joint before replacing a bolt
A replacement needs to work with the joint, not just fit the hole. Verify the required diameter, pitch, length and thread engagement, along with compatible nuts and washers. Consider load direction and the installation requirements, including lubrication and torque; these can affect how the joint performs.
- Use the specified fastener for the assembly, not a bolt selected only because its dimensions match.
- Do not assume that upgrading to a higher strength grade is always an improvement; a joint may be designed around a particular fastener.
- For lifting, structural, vehicle or other safety-critical assemblies, follow the specified fastener and authoritative application guidance.
- If the specification cannot be established, do not treat a visual match or trial fit as approval to use the bolt.
