KitchenAid’s Gorgeous Green Stand Mixer Has a Walnut Bowl—and One Important Catch

KitchenAid’s Evergreen is a deep green 5-quart Artisan mixer with a genuine walnut bowl, brass detailing, and a significant care catch. Here’s what it costs, what it can make, and whether the premium is worth accepting hand-washing and conditioning.

KitchenAid launched the 2024 Design Series Evergreen Tilt-Head Stand Mixer, model KSM180WSEG, on September 9, 2024. Its deep forest-green matte finish, brass detailing, and genuine walnut bowl make it look unlike the standard Artisan mixers that inspired it. But the bowl is not a decorative stainless-steel substitute: it must be hand-washed, dried immediately, regularly conditioned, and kept away from soaking, refrigeration, heat, and the dishwasher.

In other words, the Evergreen is a familiar 5-quart, 10-speed KitchenAid mixer packaged as a design object. It can handle everyday cakes, cookies, brownies, bread dough, whipped cream, and—according to independent testers—even meringue. The premium makes sense for a design-first baker who accepts the extra care. For anyone who wants maximum convenience or value, a standard Artisan with a stainless-steel bowl is the more practical purchase.

What KitchenAid actually launched

The Evergreen is not a new mixer architecture or a higher-powered bowl-lift machine. It is a 5-quart, 10-speed, tilt-head Artisan-series mixer with a 325-watt motor and KitchenAid’s familiar front power hub for optional attachments. The change is primarily in the materials and finish: the mixer body is a special Design Series colorway built around a walnut mixing bowl.

KitchenAid described the product at launch as the brand’s first mixer with a true walnut wood bowl. That wording is accurate for the 2024 launch, but it needs a current qualification: KitchenAid later introduced a Porcelain White 5-quart mixer with a walnut bowl, model KSM156WBPL, in September 2025. Evergreen was first; it is no longer KitchenAid’s only walnut-bowl mixer.

The original launch announcement is available through KitchenAid’s September 2024 release, while the current product page identifies the model and its included equipment.

Why the Evergreen looks different

The design is more deliberately coordinated than a conventional colored Artisan mixer:

  • A deep forest-green body uses a lush matte finish rather than the usual glossy exterior.
  • The control lever and other visible knobs use a coordinated glossy green finish.
  • The front hub cover is brass-plated, with a debossed leaf motif and ridged edges.
  • The bowl is made from walnut with naturally varied grain, so each bowl has its own appearance. The pattern is not printed or applied as a faux-wood graphic.

The result is a mixer intended to remain visible on the countertop. The matte green and brass details give it a furniture-like presence, while the bowl supplies the natural material that differentiates it from KitchenAid’s many painted-metal and stainless-steel combinations.

What comes in the box

The KSM180WSEG package includes:

  1. The Evergreen tilt-head mixer body
  2. A 5-quart walnut wood bowl
  3. A stainless-steel flat beater
  4. A stainless-steel dough hook
  5. A stainless-steel six-wire whip

KitchenAid does not list a second bowl, bowl lid, bowl handle, or pouring shield as included with this model. Additional power-hub attachments, such as pasta rollers or food-preparation accessories, are sold separately. The stainless-steel mixing attachments are dishwasher-safe according to the owner’s manual; that does not apply to the walnut bowl.

Price and availability: the launch price is no longer the current price

KitchenAid announced the Evergreen with a launch MSRP of $699.99. The latest indexed listings used for this article show it at approximately $799.99 from KitchenAid and $799.95 from Williams Sonoma. That is roughly $100 above the original launch price.

For comparison, KitchenAid’s current indexed price for one standard 5-quart Artisan tilt-head model, the KSM150PSBM, is $499.99. At those listed prices, the Evergreen carries an approximately $300 premium over the conventional model.

Prices and inventory are live commerce details. KitchenAid’s main catalog has continued to list the Evergreen, while an older product endpoint has shown it temporarily out of stock. What “true walnut wood bowl” means

The bowl is not carved from one uninterrupted block of walnut. KitchenAid’s care documentation says it is constructed from laminations of solid walnut wood. The pieces are glued together, machined into the bowl’s shape, sanded, and coated with a food-safe finish.

That construction still represents a substantially different material from the usual stainless-steel bowl, but the finish does not make the bowl maintenance-free. KitchenAid says normal marks, scratches, and other signs of use are expected over time and should not affect performance when the bowl is properly maintained.

Because the grain is natural and the bowl is made from wood laminations, no two bowls will look exactly alike. That variation is part of the appeal—and also means buyers should not expect a perfectly uniform finish.

The bowl’s care requirements are the real catch

KitchenAid’s official instructions are considerably more demanding than the care routine for a stainless-steel bowl. The company recommends conditioning the bowl after each use for best results.

After every use

  1. Remove the bowl from the mixer.
  2. Hand-wash it with warm water and a gentle, non-abrasive detergent.
  3. Do not leave it submerged or soaking.
  4. Dry it immediately with a soft, clean cloth.
  5. Regularly apply food-safe mineral oil, walnut oil, or another food-safe wood conditioner. KitchenAid recommends conditioning after each use for best results.

Keep the bowl away from

  • The dishwasher
  • The microwave
  • Steel wool, scouring pads, and abrasive cleaners
  • Prolonged soaking
  • The refrigerator or other cold storage
  • Warming or heating
  • Hot or boiling food and liquids

KitchenAid says refrigeration is not recommended because cold temperatures can stress the bowl’s finish and joints. The same practical rule applies to recipes that call for chilling dough, cream, or another mixture: use the mixer bowl for mixing, then transfer the mixture to a separate metal or glass container.

This is the central ownership trade-off. A stainless bowl can usually be soaked, chilled, scrubbed, and placed in the dishwasher with far less concern. The walnut bowl asks the owner to treat it more like finished wood furniture that also happens to be food-contact equipment.

For the complete manufacturer instructions, see KitchenAid’s wooden-bowl cleaning and care guide and the Evergreen FAQ.

Can you use it for normal baking?

Yes, for most ordinary mixing tasks. The available independent testing supports the view that the bowl does not prevent the mixer from making everyday recipes.

  • Brownies: The Kitchn’s tester made brownie batter and reported no meaningful difference in mixing performance. The bowl also cleaned successfully with careful hand-washing.
  • Cakes, cookies, and bread: Good Housekeeping reported successful tests with cake batter, cookies, and bread dough.
  • Thick dough: Good Housekeeping found that sticky oatmeal-cookie dough required extra scraping and stuck somewhat more than it did to stainless steel.
  • Whipped cream and egg whites: Good Housekeeping reported success with both, although the egg whites showed some weeping.
  • Meringue: WIRED successfully made meringue cookies and reached stiff peaks, despite KitchenAid’s official caution about whipped egg creations.

The important distinction is between mixing performance and workflow convenience. The mixer can mix a normal batch, but the wooden bowl changes what happens before and after mixing. You cannot simply soak it overnight, put it in the refrigerator for dough chilling, or transfer it to the microwave to melt or warm ingredients.

WIRED also found that cookie dough did not chill properly in the wooden bowl because wood is less thermally conductive than thin steel. The dough had to be moved to another bowl. That is not a failure of the mixer, but it is a meaningful inconvenience for recipes that depend on chilling.

What about egg whites, meringues, soufflés, and macarons?

KitchenAid’s official position is cautious: it does not recommend the oiled wooden bowl for whipped egg creations, because residual oil can make egg whites more difficult to whip.

Independent testing is more nuanced. WIRED successfully made meringue cookies, and Good Housekeeping successfully whipped egg whites and cream. Those results show that the bowl is not categorically incapable of whipping egg whites, but they do not override KitchenAid’s instructions or guarantee identical results in every kitchen. The outcome may depend on how much conditioner remains on the bowl, how thoroughly it was cleaned, the recipe, and the technique.

If you regularly make meringues, soufflés, macarons, angel food cake, or other recipes where even a small amount of fat can matter, keep a stainless-steel bowl available. That gives you a manufacturer-aligned, easier-to-control option without giving up the Evergreen’s walnut bowl for other recipes.

Can the walnut bowl go in the refrigerator or freezer?

KitchenAid says refrigeration is not recommended, so the safest answer is no for normal recipe workflow. Do not chill the walnut bowl for whipped cream, frozen desserts, or cookie dough. Transfer the contents to a separate metal or glass container when a recipe calls for refrigeration.

The manufacturer’s current guidance cited here does not establish a broad freezer-use recommendation. It is therefore better not to infer that freezer storage is acceptable simply because a particular recipe calls for it.

What if you have a walnut allergy?

KitchenAid’s FAQ says the bowl should not cause complications for someone with a walnut or nut allergy. That is a statement from the manufacturer, not independent medical guidance. The bowl is made from walnut, and people with severe or medically diagnosed allergies should not rely on a general product FAQ as a personal safety determination.

If this affects your household, contact KitchenAid about the exact materials and finish, and ask a qualified allergist for advice before buying or using the mixer.

Can you use a different bowl?

A companion stainless-steel bowl is the most useful way to make the Evergreen more flexible. KitchenAid says its full-size tilt-head mixers can use interchangeable 3- to 5-quart bowls, but tilt-head and bowl-lift bowls are not interchangeable. Compatibility depends on the exact bowl and mixer model, so do not assume that every KitchenAid bowl fits every KitchenAid mixer.

For the Evergreen, check the model number before ordering a replacement or spare. KitchenAid lists compatible tilt-head bowls, including stainless-steel, glass, ceramic, and other finishes. A stainless bowl can be reserved for egg whites, chilling, messy mixtures, or days when hand-washing a finished wood bowl is not appealing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

KitchenAid’s current U.S. catalog does not clearly present the Evergreen’s walnut bowl as a routinely available standalone retail replacement. Do not assume that the special bowl can definitely be purchased separately unless a current KitchenAid parts or product listing confirms it.

KitchenAid’s bowl compatibility guide is the right place to start. A representative 5-quart tilt-head stainless-steel bowl illustrates the kind of practical companion bowl owners may consider, but compatibility should still be verified for the specific mixer.

What earlier coverage got right—and what it left out

Early launch coverage correctly focused on the Evergreen’s green finish, walnut bowl, brass leaf detail, and design-led positioning. The Martha Stewart launch coverage, for example, captured the visual appeal and mentioned conditioning. But a brief care warning does not fully prepare a buyer for the restrictions: no dishwasher, no soaking, no refrigeration, no warming, no hot liquids, and KitchenAid’s caution about whipped egg creations.

The Kitchn’s testing adds useful evidence from brownie batter and cleanup. Its cleaning advice should not replace KitchenAid’s current instruction to use a gentle, non-abrasive detergent.

The Atlantic emphasizes the tension between appliance and display object. That skepticism is useful, but later tests from WIRED and Good Housekeeping show that the bowl is functional for a broad range of baking tasks. The most accurate conclusion is neither that the bowl is impractical for baking nor that it is equivalent to stainless steel: it works, but it changes the care and recipe workflow.

Who should buy the Evergreen?

The Evergreen is a good fit for a buyer who:

  • Wants the mixer to function as a visible design feature, not just a hidden appliance.
  • Likes the individual grain and warmth of a natural walnut bowl.
  • Primarily makes cakes, cookies, brownies, bread dough, and other standard home-baking recipes.
  • Is comfortable hand-washing and conditioning the bowl.
  • Has enough counter and storage space for a stainless backup bowl, or is willing to transfer mixtures when needed.
  • Values the Evergreen’s finish and materials enough to pay a substantial premium over a standard Artisan.

Who should skip it?

The standard Artisan is likely a better choice if you:

  • Depend on dishwasher cleanup or regularly leave bowls soaking overnight.
  • Frequently chill dough, cream, or mixtures directly in the mixing bowl.
  • Make meringues, soufflés, macarons, or other egg-white-heavy recipes and want the simplest manufacturer-approved setup.
  • Need maximum capacity or often mix very heavy doughs. In that case, compare a larger bowl-lift model rather than paying more for a decorative 5-quart tilt-head.
  • Want KitchenAid’s mixing platform at the lowest reasonable cost rather than a statement finish and walnut bowl.

Alternatives worth considering

Standard 5-quart Artisan with a stainless-steel bowl

KitchenAid’s standard 5-quart Artisan provides the familiar tilt-head format and 10-speed platform at a substantially lower indexed price of $499.99 for one current model. It is the value choice for buyers who care more about mixing capability and easy cleanup than the Evergreen’s finish. See the current Artisan listing for live pricing.

Standard Artisan plus a second compatible bowl

Buying a conventional Artisan and adding a compatible stainless-steel or decorative bowl gives you more control over the daily workflow. You can use stainless steel for chilling, egg whites, and difficult cleanup while choosing a ceramic, glass, or other bowl when appearance matters. Verify the bowl’s compatibility with the exact tilt-head model before ordering.

Porcelain White Artisan with walnut bowl

For shoppers who like the walnut but not the dark green finish, KitchenAid’s Porcelain White KSM156WBPL is the closest current alternative. It is another 5-quart Artisan tilt-head mixer with a walnut bowl, and KitchenAid’s indexed price is $749.99. It retains the same basic wooden-bowl care requirements, so the neutral color does not solve the maintenance issue.

See the 2025 Porcelain White collection announcement and the current KSM156WBPL listing for details.

Bottom line

The KitchenAid Evergreen is best understood as a conventional 5-quart Artisan mixer with an unusually handsome design package. Its deep matte green finish, brass leaf hub, and individually grained walnut bowl make it a stronger countertop statement than a standard model, but they do not make it more powerful or larger.

The walnut bowl is fully usable for everyday baking, yet it requires real discipline: hand-wash it, dry it immediately, condition it regularly, and do not soak, chill, heat, microwave, or dishwash it. KitchenAid also does not recommend it for whipped egg creations, even though independent testers have achieved successful whipped whites and meringue. If that trade-off sounds acceptable—or if you are willing to keep a stainless bowl beside it—the Evergreen can justify its premium. If not, the standard Artisan is the more rational buy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the KitchenAid Evergreen walnut bowl dishwasher-safe?

No. KitchenAid says to hand-wash the bowl with warm water and a gentle, non-abrasive detergent, dry it immediately, and condition it regularly with food-safe mineral oil, walnut oil, or wood conditioner.

Can the Evergreen mixer whip egg whites?

KitchenAid does not recommend using the oiled walnut bowl for whipped egg creations because oil can make egg whites harder to whip. Independent testers from WIRED and Good Housekeeping nevertheless succeeded with meringue or egg whites, so the result is possible but not guaranteed or manufacturer-recommended.

Is the Evergreen more powerful than a standard KitchenAid Artisan mixer?

No supported evidence indicates that it is. The Evergreen is a 5-quart, 10-speed, 325-watt tilt-head Artisan-series mixer. Its premium is for the finish, brass detailing, and walnut bowl rather than a fundamentally different mixing system.

Does KitchenAid sell the Evergreen walnut bowl separately?

KitchenAid’s current U.S. catalog does not clearly list it as a standard standalone retail item. Owners should verify current parts availability rather than assume the special bowl can be replaced separately. A compatible stainless-steel tilt-head bowl is the more readily available practical backup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Verdict: Buy the Evergreen for its design, natural walnut grain, and countertop presence—not for a performance upgrade. It handles normal baking well, but the bowl demands hand care and is a poor choice for dishwasher-dependent users or anyone who frequently chills mixtures or makes fat-sensitive egg-white recipes.
